SaintJackoInHurworth Posted 5 August, 2016 Share Posted 5 August, 2016 I was just looking at the teams lining up at the Olympics and see that Germany, Portugal, Sweden and Denmark all have squads at the tournament together with a number of non-European nations including, of course, Brazil. It just occurred to me that with our emphasis on younger talented players could this effect our ability to bring in players that we might otherwise have wanted to sign now? For example, I wonder whether Denmark had considered taking Hoijbjerg to the tournament. If they had would we have signed him?
notnowcato Posted 5 August, 2016 Share Posted 5 August, 2016 I could be wrong but I think one of the conditions of the sale was that Pierre would not represent Denmark at the Olympics.
ADutchSaint Posted 5 August, 2016 Share Posted 5 August, 2016 Clubs can deny players from going, Olympics are not part of the FIFA calendar so every player who's in Brazil atm had permission from his club. Doubt that would stand in the way of a transfer. I don't know about you but I don't know a single person who really cares about football at the Olympics. Tournament started yesterday already and it's not even on tv here. Squads look pretty light as well, lot of players didn't get permission.

You can tell that because the BBC are 'pushing' games at every opportunity as they do with so many things that no one gives a to$$ about.
FloridaMarlin Posted 5 August, 2016 Share Posted 5 August, 2016 I could be wrong but I think one of the conditions of the sale was that Pierre would not represent Denmark at the Olympics. I'm not sure who that condition would be made with. The decision as to whether he would be called into the Danish Olympic squad would rest with the Danish Olympic body and the Danish FA, not as a condition of sale with Bayern. I'm not sure Saints would be able to go to the Danish Olympic Association and say; "We - an English club - won't buy this player from a German club, unless you agree not to pick him for the Olympics." Their attitude might well be: "Sorry, but that has bugger all to do with us, and if we want to pick him, we will."

stevegrant Posted 5 August, 2016 Share Posted 5 August, 2016 Denmark do seem to have gone with a squad of relative unknowns. There's only 2 players in their squad of 18 with full international caps (10 & 5 caps respectively), the rest generally have U21 or U19 experience, so I suspect Højbjerg and the likes of Christian Eriksen weren't even in consideration for it. Hojbjerg has 17 senior caps for Denmark already....might that disqualify him from the squad ? or perhaps ?....Saints said ......you're our player now and we don't want you crocked before the season starts. Recalling that Jack Cork was injured in/around the 2012 Olympics and took a long time to get back to full fitness.
