Looks fine as back up. Bit of an odd choice for him though - hes never played regularly anywhere. At 26 you'd think he'd want to go somewhere where he'd be No1.

4 competitions this season, he'll get games with us.

Ummmm ...personally I thought Gazza was at least as good and didn't let us down more recently ....

Bit of a shame....

He's been here 4 years and hasn't looked good enough to challenge, time for him to get a change of scenery.

On a side note, extremely sad for someone to stalk potential new signing's activities on social media - get a life. Have you not got Pokemon to catch or something?

Go boil your head, honestly, what harm does it do. I'm sure you have an amazingly interesting life too, seeing as you spend a proportion of it posting on here.

Good signing.

Les Reed's quotes in that article properly crack me up though [emoji38]

We've now got the best goalkeeping options in the whole league to go alongside the best midfield options in the whole league.

And feck me don't we know it![emoji6]

:p

Good signing. Was never a fan of Gazza's unfortunately - always looked like he was petrified of making a mistake at Prem level, so he flapped (although he did seem to improve).

He had a very interesting stat when he, Kelvin and Boruc played in the same season. I think that they all did, and it transpired that he had the best shot/save or goal ratio of the 3. But I agree, that he has never reached "his potential".

Not good enough to challenge no but capable back up. He did well when called upon last season.

So such is the thinking on here, should we believe McCarthy is Forster's replacement for next summer? He and VVD would be the big saleable assets after all.

Yes, some long term planning going on.

Have you never heard of self-fulfilling prophecies??? The more our fan base perpetuate this mindset the more people will expect it. But then you probably enjoy it so you can feel comfort in the feeling of mediocrity. Our fans need coaching.....

This ones been on the cards for a few weeks. Found out yesterday and know very little about him. He didn't play against us last season and wasn't going anywhere behind Wayne Hennessey. Dave Watson will get the best out of him.

One for the future and 3 year contract doesn't buy into our tying down of players.

Good luck and welcome.

So I guess that I am the only one not particularly enthralled to see us signing Crystal Palace's number 3/4 as our number 2? Yes, he showed promise at Reading but has failed to become first choice at both QPR and Palace since then. In fact, he wasn't even 2nd choice at Palace. Added to this is the fact that now Gazza has gone on a season long loan Harry Lewis is 3rd choice for the season. God forbid anything happens to Fraser!

Anyway, welcome Alex. I sincerely hope Dave Watson can get you back to your best, and that Fraser stays injury, illness and suspension free for the next year and well beyond....

Well all we can do is trust our goalkeeping coach as it seems he had a big hand in his recruitment.

Gazza never ever gave me confidence after some poor mistakes and looked a scared rabbit at times. This suits all parties as Gazza hopefully gets games away from here and we get a decent backup keeper who Watson feels can improve.

Good signing.

Les Reed's quotes in that article properly crack me up though

Has there ever been two keepers from the same club called up for England?

“I am confident that Fraser will soon be England’s number one, and in Alex we have a young player who has already had a taste of the England senior squad, as well as excellent experience at Under-21 level.

“Alex is ambitious and will be pushing for a starting place every time he gets the opportunity, which can only be good for Fraser and a shining example for Harry Lewis and the younger keepers below.

“Working with Dave Watson, our keepers can only get better and, who knows, we could have two Saints stoppers at the World Cup in two years’ time.”

It will be a sorry state of affairs if one of the three keepers called up to the England world cup squad is a back up keeper for a middle sized Prem club.

Tom Heaton went to the Euros didn't he? I'd prefer a forster back up in the prem to a first teamer from the championship.

OK, so I assume he is deemed to be the no2 GK (replacing Stek) and Harry Lewis becomes no3 (replacing Gazza). Unless we are expecting another incoming between the sticks?

If we get an injury to either I expect an emergency loan will happen
