Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares

I'm not sure which games Cedric was supposed to be poor at. I went to all the home games except Everton, and saw no evidence of him being **** that others seem to have.

Yeah you missed his worst game then. Lukaku was having one of those days when he actually looks worth 65 million and he battered Cedric. Having said that I think Cedric has shown a lot of the attributes needed in a good RB so this season it will be interesting to se if he kicks on under a different manager.

No, Fonte and Cédric are the first. Terry Paine played in England’s opening game of the 1966 World Cup Finals v Mexico but then was replaced by Alan Ball, who, of course, later played for Saints.

If there had been a World Cup in the early 1900s, however, Saints might well have been good enough to win it, as they thrashed the national teams of Argentina, Uruguay, Hungary and France on tour.

I think that Fonte, although playing in the less glamorous position of centre back, has now earned the right to be considered one of the all-time great Saints, up there with the likes of Paine, Channon and Le Tissier.

I agree Fonte has been good for Saints but not that good to be alongside the three mentioned.

The opening game was against Uruguay at Wembley.I think the score was 0-0

Cedric's claimed lack of physicality for English football is offset by his bravery. He took another kick to the head the other night.

The lad is a tough cookie. I hope he cements his place and has a stormin season.

Hi Norm, yes I agree.

After 56 years of supporting Saints ...I'd say there is a distinct line between.....a fans favourite.....good/great clubman ....."all time great ".....and legend.

I wouldn't want to " categorise " every player we've ever had, but those mentioned above are in a class of their own and their record proves it.

You are right. It was England's 2nd game he played in: a 2-0 win v Mexico.

......and (apparantly) TP took a knock to the head in the first 10 minutes, but continued a bit "groggy" and played out the game to the end.

Alf Ramsey didn't want to take a chance in the next game with TP's case of concussion, and so put in Alan Ball instead....the rest (as they say) is history.

As for Fonte and Cedric....If Portugal win the Euro Final, then they will move up a notch in " the Legendary stakes ".

50/1 Fonte first goal. What a moment that could be for him. Didn't we nearly sell him to Cardiff a couple of seasons back? A leader, and a legend

Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk

I thought it was his agent who was trying to 'sell him' to Cardiff, although probably a negotiating tactic to enhance a deal at Saints.

Anyway, will be rooting (or wooting even) for Fonte and Cedric tonight.
