Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares

We could do with buying another couple of players from that Portugal team. I expect José will have a word with them. He appears to be the leader of that team, constantly organising them and nearly all of their attacks build from the back, starting from him. Cédric really has electric pace. If he converted from wing-back to winger, he'd be a brilliant replacment for Mane. The only question mark would be against his finishing.

Won't they be the first current saints players to play in an international final? I know Paine was in the 66 squad and a few have done it before joining or after leaving but think they'll be the first to do it whilst being saints players.

I thought I had come over all MLG and found a genius stat to prove your theory wrong but sadly Aleaddine Yahia was only a squad member for the Tunisian team which won the ACON in 2004, the season he belonged to Saints but played no first team games.

Peter Shilton won the Stanley Rous cup in 1986 whilst a saint. Does that count?

We were at our local sports bar here in Portugal where the Southampton flag signed by both our Portuguese players is adjacent to the Portuguese flag, again, signed by both our players. The bar owner Jose, kept shouting "we have two Southampton players" which was winding up the Scoucers. Unfortunately, the Liverpool towel is also on the wall (unsigned). Great excitement when they won tonight. Both Fonte and Soares appeared on Portuguese TV talking about The match. Fonte is a credit to Southampton.

To be fair, the Portugal defence looked useless in the early part of the Euros, Carvalho is well past his best. Since they put Fonte and Soares in the team, they haven't looked like losing.

If only facts like these had come out when Koeman was considering the Everton job he'd have surely stayed. Sir Les missed a trick.

Nice to hear Adrian Durham being so positive this morning. Said that he was surprised Wales didn't attack Cedric who after all is a fairly average defender. Or maybe he said that he wasn't particularly good. His words tend to come in one ear and out the other, but the gist of it is correct as to what he said.

Strange that. I think exactly the same about Adrian Durham, when I hear him speak.

I also think he's a c*nt.

To be fair on PL viewing Cedric is a pretty average defender.

Portugal also had two fairly slow CBs and they were rarely tested.

Its a fair point.

Wales always set themselves up as a defensive unit first though, which gives the RB a lot less pressure defensively and more opportunity to join the attack, which I think most would agree is a stronger area for Cedric. For the same reason, Walker (twice) and Clyne were arguably England's best players in games against defensive teams - the full backs are often the out-ball, so see a lot of the ball in attacking areas without being particularly exposed the other way.

If anyone deserves to be added to the banner, it's Fonte

100% YES. Been with us for 6 years having dropped down a league to join us. Captain, role model and a credit to the club.

Now he's playing in an international final! Congrats Jose :D

Agreed, but I think we should only add people to the banner once they've stopped playing for us. Just in case he comes back from the Euros and says he wants to join Everton.

I've always wanted France to win the tournament after everything they've been through as a nation. I think I'll stick by that, but what an achievement it would be for Jose and Cedric to lift the trophy. Would be delighted for them.

Fonte is a natural leader. Despite joining the national side somewhat late in years, you can see that he has earned the respect and friendship of his teammates. It makes this run that much more enjoyable for me to watch.

It will be a real test if Pepe is out. It helps that Ramsey is on suspension.

Ronaldo is maturing and becoming less of a tw*t every day. He will probably never make it to the ranks of the humble, but (in addition to loving himself) he has immense love for the game, team, and country. You must respect that, along with his talent.

He already has. He said so in a post game interview.

Nobody else worried someone may come in for Fonte after his performances at the Euros?

I think at the age of 32 none of the big clubs are going to consider an offer. Would he want to go back to Benfica if offered? Maybe after this season but I don't think before.

Cedric is only average because saints fans have high expectations. Statistically he was one of the best right backs in the league last season. RK only preferred Martina when the opposition set up for the counter attack as Martina tended to play a better game in that situation.

Portugal my have had two fairly slow CBs but I was very impressed when Fonte chased Bale to stop the cross albeit at the expense of a corner

So when will Jose and Cedric come back for training? Like August the 6th? Won't season start in like 10 days though? Hmm. Imm guessing they'll miss most of our pre season fixtures then?

They'll probably get a week off, so be back around 18th July.

Has the club ever had players involved in a major international final?

He said Cedric is terrible and Wales should've doubled up on him. Also said Cedric is only a Southampton reserve.

Probably based on the first 100 seconds against Poland.

Fair comment on the face of it.

Bang average for us last season and dropped for cuco plenty of times

We shall see if Puel can unlock the talent etc

No, Fonte and Cédric are the first. Terry Paine played in England’s opening game of the 1966 World Cup Finals v Mexico but then was replaced by Alan Ball, who, of course, later played for Saints.

If there had been a World Cup in the early 1900s, however, Saints might well have been good enough to win it, as they thrashed the national teams of Argentina, Uruguay, Hungary and France on tour.

I think that Fonte, although playing in the less glamorous position of centre back, has now earned the right to be considered one of the all-time great Saints, up there with the likes of Paine, Channon and Le Tissier.

I doubt he even knows anything about him - simply clocked he doesn't play regularly for Saints and assumed he must be carp.

Excellent work. Well done to all concerned!!

How good would it feel to say that we have two World Cup Winners in our team.

One week, don't be daft. They will get 3 or 4 weeks like everyone else. Davis, Long, Forster and Bertrand not back yet, not forgetting Pelle. They will be back early August, not much pre-season for Cedric and Jose this year which will be a problem for them and us.

3 weeks I reckon, back for 1st of August.

Very proud watching Jose excel at this level, a lot has happened since that wonderful last gasp looping header (& celebration) at the withdean five years back. Would be soooo sweet if the two lads arrive back with winners medals. Forca Portugal indeed ?
