Nordic Saint Posted 6 July, 2016 Share Posted 6 July, 2016 We could do with buying another couple of players from that Portugal team. I expect José will have a word with them. He appears to be the leader of that team, constantly organising them and nearly all of their attacks build from the back, starting from him. Cédric really has electric pace. If he converted from wing-back to winger, he'd be a brilliant replacment for Mane. The only question mark would be against his finishing.
Turkish Posted 6 July, 2016 Share Posted 6 July, 2016 Won't they be the first current saints players to play in an international final? I know Paine was in the 66 squad and a few have done it before joining or after leaving but think they'll be the first to do it whilst being saints players. Portugalsaint Posted 6 July, 2016 Author Share Posted 6 July, 2016 We were at our local sports bar here in Portugal where the Southampton flag signed by both our Portuguese players is adjacent to the Portuguese flag, again, signed by both our players. The bar owner Jose, kept shouting "we have two Southampton players" which was winding up the Scoucers. Unfortunately, the Liverpool towel is also on the wall (unsigned). Great excitement when they won tonight. Both Fonte and Soares appeared on Portuguese TV talking about The match. Fonte is a credit to Southampton. To be fair, the Portugal defence looked useless in the early part of the Euros, Carvalho is well past his best. Since they put Fonte and Soares in the team, they haven't looked like losing. Wes Tender Posted 6 July, 2016 Share Posted 6 July, 2016 Both Fonte and Cedric have been superb for Portugal since they have played together in defence. Lighthouse Posted 6 July, 2016 Share Posted 6 July, 2016 Thought I had an absolute cracker - Lucien Mettomo in the 2008 ACON (Cameroon were runners up) turns out he didn't even make the squad. No luck with Viafara or Delgado either.
the saint in winchester Posted 6 July, 2016 Share Posted 6 July, 2016 Agree, Jose and Cedric were brilliant tonight. Hope our manager was watching and makes Cedric first choice starter next season. angelman Posted 7 July, 2016 Share Posted 7 July, 2016 (edited) Nice to hear Adrian Durham being so positive this morning. Said that he was surprised Wales didn't attack Cedric who after all is a fairly average defender. Or maybe he said that he wasn't particularly good. His words tend to come in one ear and out the other, but the gist of it is correct as to what he said. Edited 7 July, 2016 by angelman

mrfahaji Posted 7 July, 2016 Share Posted 7 July, 2016 To be fair on PL viewing Cedric is a pretty average defender. Portugal also had two fairly slow CBs and they were rarely tested. Its a fair point. Wales always set themselves up as a defensive unit first though, which gives the RB a lot less pressure defensively and more opportunity to join the attack, which I think most would agree is a stronger area for Cedric. For the same reason, Walker (twice) and Clyne were arguably England's best players in games against defensive teams - the full backs are often the out-ball, so see a lot of the ball in attacking areas without being particularly exposed the other way. Redslo Posted 7 July, 2016 Share Posted 7 July, 2016 Fonte is a natural leader. Despite joining the national side somewhat late in years, you can see that he has earned the respect and friendship of his teammates. It makes this run that much more enjoyable for me to watch. It will be a real test if Pepe is out. It helps that Ramsey is on suspension. Ronaldo is maturing and becoming less of a tw*t every day. He will probably never make it to the ranks of the humble, but (in addition to loving himself) he has immense love for the game, team, and country. You must respect that, along with his talent. He already has. He said so in a post game interview.

Mowgli Posted 7 July, 2016 Share Posted 7 July, 2016 To be fair on PL viewing Cedric is a pretty average defender. Portugal also had two fairly slow CBs and they were rarely tested. Its a fair point. Cedric is only average because saints fans have high expectations. Statistically he was one of the best right backs in the league last season. RK only preferred Martina when the opposition set up for the counter attack as Martina tended to play a better game in that situation. Portugal my have had two fairly slow CBs but I was very impressed when Fonte chased Bale to stop the cross albeit at the expense of a corner

Nordic Saint Posted 7 July, 2016 Share Posted 7 July, 2016 They'll probably get a week off, so be back around 18th July. Has the club ever had players involved in a major international final? No, Fonte and Cédric are the first. Terry Paine played in England’s opening game of the 1966 World Cup Finals v Mexico but then was replaced by Alan Ball, who, of course, later played for Saints. If there had been a World Cup in the early 1900s, however, Saints might well have been good enough to win it, as they thrashed the national teams of Argentina, Uruguay, Hungary and France on tour. I think that Fonte, although playing in the less glamorous position of centre back, has now earned the right to be considered one of the all-time great Saints, up there with the likes of Paine, Channon and Le Tissier.
