moonraker Posted 14 July, 2016 Share Posted 14 July, 2016 The new Cabinet poses more questions than it answers. While some appointments or confirmations and indeed sackings were predictable the 3 that stand out are, Bojo, Sly Fox and Davis. All prominent and controversial Brexiters. Whilst having Brexiters in the cabinet was essential there are plenty of other lower profile Brexiters who could have been appointed to satisfy the Brexit constituency. Fox is toxic, he failed at Defence and has not got a look in since. He is on the very right of the party and while he is very careful not to air dirty washing in public he is known for his behind the scenes sh*t stirring. Cameron appointed him to keep an eye on him and to trap him, it worked, I hope May has the same strategy. Bojo is another case of give him some rope and he will hang himself. If they are true to form, May will soon enough have a good reason to replace them and the Brexit and Right wing factions of the Tory party will have nothing to bleat about. Davis is a shrewder appointment, a perennial Eurosceptic and a darling of the grass roots. He has been charged with what is arguably the most difficult job. There are no case studies to review, experienced mentors to consult or well exercised civil servants to call on. It’s a case of you wanted this now sort it out. If things do not go the way Brexiters want, May can use Davis as her human shield. Will they all be in post a year from now, I wouldn’t bet on it. Lord Duckhunter Posted 15 July, 2016 Share Posted 15 July, 2016 I must say that I'm pretty impressed with May and her handling of her appointments to the new Cabinet. Agree , she's made a great start. According to Nick Watt on Newsnight she told Gideon he'd over promised and under delivered in number 11, and that's why she sacked him . Spot on from Mrs May there . Wes Tender Posted 15 July, 2016 Share Posted 15 July, 2016 Agree , she's made a great start. According to Nick Watt on Newsnight she told Gideon he'd over promised and under delivered in number 11, and that's why she sacked him . Spot on from Mrs May there . There was also the suggestion that May had acted to rid the Cabinet of the Cameron clique, which of course very much included Osborne. But Osborne, like Cameron, had put his head on the block by his prominent role in the Referendum Campaign, so there was no way that he could have been kept on after the shocking way that he had talked down the British economy in the event of us leaving the EU. His credibility had taken too much of a knock. Regarding the other appointments, the Eurosceptics in the Party and the country will be happy that they are represented by Boris, Fox, Davis and Leadsom. The number of women in the Cabinet has increased too, which will play well with the electorate and make the party look more inclusive and hopefully bring in a softer edge to policy-making. The only controversial appointment is that Hunt remains as Health Secretary, but in the light of her other decisions, I am prepared to trust her judgement and to wait and see whether she can help bring about a satisfactory resolution to the Junior Doctors' contract dispute. Certainly, though if he'd only promised what he'd delivered things wouldn't look so bad. It's his ambition that will have concerned her, along with the desire to draw a line under the Cameron era, because he's clearly more capable than many of those she did pick. Wade Garrett Posted 15 July, 2016 Share Posted 15 July, 2016 Quite like the look of her cabinet, and what she has had to say so far. David Davis is a very shrewd operator, spot on for the Brexit role. Meanwhile, the party I have always voted for are currently as appealing as Ann Wideecombe dancing on a pole. Funny how things are working out.

As a matter of interest what are you looking for in a Political party I am genuinely interested I agree that what May has said so far is good but it is very similar to what Miliband was saying between 2012 and 2015

John B Posted 15 July, 2016 Author Share Posted 15 July, 2016 If she can stick to what she said, that pretty much covers it. thanks for that I agree with you it covers it for me too but then I saw this comment in my local paper and thought the Tories are still attacking the poor and disadvantaged I am far from poor and disadvantaged but a few million are and they probably feel frustrated about their day to day existence Tory Councillor invoked new Prime Minister Theresa May and her belief in "national conservatism" saying it was for the council to promote "self reliance" not do everything but unfortunately loads of people cannot do self reliance without some kind of help which is now being cut. The opposition were suggesting for not reducing funding to family charity Homestart by 50 per cent, keeping £17,000 for universal services for young people and not removing a childminder development post (£23,000). To fund these changes it was hoped the council would consider a move towards becoming a "paper-light" administration, saving £20,000, postponing the residents survey (£30,000) and putting the Councils newsletter online (£20,000). But lets wait and see what happens I think May should be given every opportunity to put into reality what she has said because lets face it there is nothing else remotely on offer from the the other lot. I'm not too trusting of the Tory party. It always seems to be the little man that loses the most. They seem to govern for the few. Like I said, if she sticks to what she says I'll be ok with it. We'll see.
ecuk268 Posted 19 July, 2016 Share Posted 19 July, 2016 In her speech outside No. 10 last week, May said that she would stop UK companies being sold to foreign owners. So when ARM, a world-leading technology company which designs the chips in 95% of the world's smartphones, gets flogged off to the Japanese, she welcomes it. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.
