There are two issues here, petrol delivery shortages and panic buying.

The panic buying was prompted by media reporting and social media and blown up by the Suns headline on Friday. But the reporting didn't just happen out of thin air, a shortage of deliveries has been happening for months, deliveries not turning up and arriving days later, this then got to the point where it was harder to paper of the cracks. The reporting started when two suppliers declared they could not fulfill all their deliveries.

One then leads to the other.

Was no shortage before demand jumped 500% the morning the media said we had one cause bp announced it was temporarily closing 4 out of the way stations out of around 13000 becuase of driver issues, they didnt say they could not keep up with normal demand. Media following sheep have caused the issue, just like the apparent toilet roll shortage at first lockdown also caused by media following sheep...

There is no shortage of fuel but a shortage of delivery drivers, that's a fact. I thought you brexiteers didn't like calling the public thick.

There is no easy way to stop panic buying it's just human nature, like a cat running off when they hear a loud clap. Fuckin thick non free thinking sheep cats.

So there was no shortage, but the mass panic was triggered by the media reporting on a shortage.

I never said thick, i called them sheeps, and it is not human nature to panic about a none life threatening situation, fine line between normal behaviour having anxiety and just being irrational , it is not normal human nature to buy over a years worth of bog roll cause the sun newspaper told you that you should?

Its not normal that the old dude over the road has 5 big barrels of petrol even though he uses his car just to go shopping and the doctors which are both with in walking distance and a full tank in his own words lasts him a month but yet he brought over 400 quids worth of fuel for his little fiat 500. He still has more loo roll than tesco in his garage that he cant fit his car into cause its full of bog roll and petrol... Now he has loads of petrol and bog roll in his garage.. Accident waiting to happen.. Its irrational and not normal.. Since he has stocked up on petrol he hasnt been out in his car... And the so called panic never happened in my town.. No garage ran dry...

Least he wont have to go for petrol for a few months...

So because no garage ran dry in your town there's no need to panic? Well bully for you. I see a pattern developing here. You've made a shedload of money out of the pandemic/Brexit/whatever so what on earth is anybody complaing about? Well I can tell you Sunny Jim, Most garages in Southampton and the surrounding area are completely empty. But there's no need to panic, none whatsoever.

I've just had a quick look on various 'Southampton Area' social media groups/pages and most people are reporting plenty of availability. Difficult to know who to believe in this day and age I guess?

In fact the IRU (International Road Transport Union) don't even mention Brexit in their latest statement which highlights a global issue

Anyone would think that the UK is the only one suffering. Surely, the remainers would look to their European friends to see how they are getting along before trying to clutch at straws????

Yep you go on ahead with your  head in the sand. Problem is you can only “whatabout? “  for  so long until the well runs dry.

where are all the brexit benefits Johnny?

M27 and M3 services now both out of fuel. Our local Shell is shut as is Tesco at Bursledon. Asda Chandlers Ford had both diesel and petrol with a £30 limit yesterday but no limit today.

Yep. Just got a full tank for my third car from costco. Lovely stuff.

They're not jacking up the prices either. 20p a litre cheaper is a hell of a lot, saves me about £14 a tank in my camper.

Sorry, is this no longer the thread where random shit that happens around the world is blamed on Brexit?

I remember very clearly the passionate campaigning that if you voted Leave then something something something petrol stations closed in 2021.

Not entirely sure that "stuff happens with the municipal administration of the city of Rome" was covered in great detail in the Operation Yellowhammer report but if it's important to you sweetheart, it's important to you.

Except there isn't really anyone saying "it's all down to Brexit".

But there are people, like you, desperate to say its nothing to do with Brexit whatsoever.

There's a difference.

Whilst I don’t think Brexit has helped, Freedom of Movement hasn’t exactly helped the Germans find their missing 60,000 drivers loooool

I thought we were independent global Britain who have freed themselves from the tether and shackles of backwards, failing Europe. We're standing proud and doing our own thing, mate.

Of course the Germans are failing, they're in the fucking hopeless, sclerotic EU.

A little recreational maths.

Germany has a shortage of 60,000 drivers in a population of 83m (1 in 1,383). Britain is short 100,000 drivers in a population of 67 million (1 in 670). Ergo Britain has double the problem of Germany.

Britain lost 20,000 drivers after single market freedom of movement ended and also has problems with EU haulage companies refusing to come here due to paperwork outside of the single market. Germany didnt

Hm. Almost seems like they are connected.

And will up wages to entice drivers from the rest of europe, those places that cant afford the wages (Italy for instance) will continue to struggle to find workers while Poland  already has a big problem with spain close behind... Apparently germany are expected to need 185k by 2227 to keep up with new jobs and retirements.. Dont know if that is true or not, got it from the dailymail so more than likely false

It's not covered in great detail in the Operation Yellowhammer report so it isn't Brexit related ;)

It is noticeable that the figures quoted are 'estimates'.

I wonder if the shortages are directly related to LGV/HGV drivers within Category C & E Licences or involve C1 + E, and C1 which is the base LGV licence which covers Transit vans and small box trucks?

There are significant numbers of Light Vans being imported into the UK at the moment to satisfy the increasing demands for Parcel and Food deliveries and there are quite a few shortages in this field to.

There are significant numbers of Light Vans being imported into the UK at the moment to satisfy the increasing demands for Parcel and Food deliveries and there are quite a few shortages in this field to.

Transit and small box vans (up to 3500kg) are covered by Cat B on your licence (essentially what everyone gets for driving cars).

Vehicles over 3.5t and below 7.5t are covered by Cat C1 - if you passed before 1997 you automatically have this, if not you have to take a seperate test.

HGV's (Heavy goods vehicles) are covered by Cat C - vehicles over 7.5t that have a fixed cab and rigid body like a bin lorry - seperate licence and CPC is needed for this.

The 'E' classification is an add on and denotes that a 'trailer' can be used.  So Class C+E is essentially the biggest lorries on the road (or LGVs - Large Goods Vehicles) - think anything that is able to 'jackknife' where a cab is towing a trailer.

It is Class C and C+E where there is a shortage of drivers.

In your example, C1+E could be a transit van towing a trailer (or an airport minibus with a trailer) - again, if you passed before 1997 you automatically have this on your licence, if not, you need to do an additional test.

To be honest I think this kind of thing is something your average Brexit voter would be okay with. What was wanted was to get the Polish out, get rid of the Polish shops on the High Street, people speaking funny on the bus, foreign kids in your kids' school with Srabble-champion surnames, send them home  send them home.

If an upshot of that is we need to import a bit more product then probably an acceptable compromise. Especially as you can still play the "look we are still trading with Europe" thing. Look, we're still trading with Europe.

British farm businesses are the losers in this scenario but you can't have everything and just remind me this means those foreigners are definitely fucking off home, right?

But an interesting development, nevertheless. Joyeux Noel, Wesołych Świąt.

There should be a mature debate about whether Brexit is working and if the current situation is just short term pain, or if anyone feels this was not what they believed they were voting for.

I've seen a couple of Leavers regretting it, but there seems to be a huge majority of them that believe for their own reasons that what we have now has made Great Britain a better place.

Others might politely suggest that the facts indicate otherwise and our skies are currently filled with chickens coming home.

As I sit here in the queue for petrol  I wonder why his comrades in naivity such as Duckie aren't now explaining how this is all good for us.

Had to get up early this morning and was listening to Farming Today.

They were speaking with pig farmer has about 3000 pigs. He would like send 300 of them for slaughter but can't because the meat processing company can't take them because most of their workers have gone back home to the EU. Overall he reckons that there are about 100000 pigs waiting for processing.

He's running out of space and the only solution is to slaughter them on the farm. It's illegal for him to do it and he can't find a vet to do it.

He must be imagining it because Boris said that there wasn't a problem in pig farming.

This is where the bollox around Brexit comes to a head. Where does pig slaughtering fit into the 'high wage high skills' economy that Boris is championing ? What about broccolli harvesting ? Or indeed care home workers. These jobs will always exist, but the economics of the businesses don't allow for people being paid £40k a year.
