watford fans were unimpressed with him for the second half of the season

Because they are deluded and thought they should have done much better. I'm sure I read somewhere that Watford had also told him at Christmas that he had no future at the club after this season.

Posted
Out of interest, was there a reason that Watford chopped him?

They had different ideas for the future. But hardly a suprise, they change managers more frequently than anyone apart from Leeds.

They think they should have done better last season by all accounts.

Apart from Leicester and Bournemouth and maybe us, who didn't think that they should have done better?

Marco Silva

Estoril[edit]

On 10 June 2011, immediately after retiring, Silva was appointed director of football at Estoril. However, early into the season, he replaced Vinícius Eutrópio as manager,[6] with the Cascais team ranking tenth in the second tier.[7] His first game in charge was a 1–3 defeat at Penafiel,[8] and, after losing only three matches in 24, he helped the club return to the top flight after seven years, as champions.[9] He ultimately was chosen the league's Manager of the Year.[10]

Silva made his debut in the Portuguese top division on 17 August 2012, in a 1–2 away defeat to S.C. Olhanense.[11] Estoril overachieved for a second best-ever fifth place in the table, with the subsequent qualification to the UEFA Europa League, also a first. Highlights included not losing any of the games against Sporting Clube de Portugal (3–1 at home, 2–2 away[12]), and drawing at S.L. Benfica 1–1.[13]

On 23 February 2014, Estoril achieved an historic first time win at the Estádio do Dragão, the 1–0 victory being FC Porto's first home defeat since the 2–3 against Leixões S.C. in 2008.[14] He left his position on 12 May, after leading his team to the fourth position.[15]

Sporting[edit]

Silva agreed to a four-year contract with Sporting on 21 May 2014, replacing Leonardo Jardim who left for AS Monaco FC.[16] He led the club to the third place in the championship, also winning the Taça de Portugal by beating S.C. Braga 3–1 on penalties after a 2–2 draw in the final.[17] This was Sporting's first piece of silverware since the 2008 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.

On 4 June 2015, four days after winning the trophy, Sporting announced that Silva had been sacked with just cause,[18][19] for not wearing the club's official suit in a cup match against F.C. Vizela.[20]

Olympiacos[edit]

On 8 July 2015, Silva was appointed the successor of countryman Vítor Pereira at Olympiacos FC, signing on a two-year contract.[21] His first competitive game occurred in the season opener in the Superleague Greece, won 3–0 against Panionios FC. On 17 September, he played his first UEFA Champions League match, losing 0–3 at home to FC Bayern Munich.[22]

Silva subsequently guided the club to break the record of 11 consecutive league wins from the first matchday,[23][24] also recording a 3–2 success at Arsenal in the Champions League group stage.[25] The Piraeus side's run of domestic wins ended at 17, a European record in the 21st century,[26] but they nonetheless won a record 43rd title with six games remaining.[27]

Looking at the Everton shortlist (minus Ronald) to see who (in theory) we might get linked with:

- Unai Emery

- Manuel Pellegrini

- Frank De Boer

- David Moyes

- Roberto Mancini

- Paulo Fonseca

- Ryan Giggs

- Diego Simeone

- Quique Sanchez Flores

- Andre Villas-Boas

- Martin O'Neill

- Quique Setien

- Mark Hughes

- Lucien Favre

- David Unsworth

- Steve Bruce

- Carlos Carvalhal

- Didier Deschamps

- Jorge Sampaoli

- Louis Van Gaal

- Eddie Howe

- Avram Grant

- Jurgen Klinsmann

- Gary Rowett

- Joachim Loew

- Marcelo Bielsa

- Sean Dyche

- Steve Evans

- Gary Neville

- Phil Neville

- Mark Warburton

- Tim Sherwood

- Laurent Blanc

All of the above.

And I don't mean any, I think we should ahve all of them as our jpoint managers. A superteam if you will of footballing geneouses who bring with them a cornocopia of knowledge, talent and contacts and, hey lets face it, if we lose one or two to another team, it doesn't matter as we have continuity. Kat can afford all of their wages, i'm sure.

You can probably see I am not taking this thread too seriously.

Also, I don't think we have a chance of Pellegrini but he'd be a remarkable improvement on Koeman and could break top four with him.

If he's spoken to Everton, why not us? Money I suppose.

We have a chance at any manager interested in moving into the Prem. We are upwardly mobile, renowned support structure and academy. We improve managers reputations and aren't known for sacking them. We have a host of players who are internationals and are coveted by much richer teams. Every year regardless of manager or backroom changes we get better. For any manager that wants a Prem job we must be high on the ideal job list unless they are someone who could already walk into Man Utd, Chelsea or Man City on their reputation.

Jeremy Wilson has broken cover.

Saints have an offer on the table to Koeman and have had no approach from Everton yet.

If he talks to Everton they won't get drawn into a bidding war, they'll seek compensation and move on.

Our leading candidate is Eddie Howe.

No ambition from Saints. You would think that we would try to keep RK and at least try and fight Everton off. No, we just bend over.

If Ronald doesn't want to be here then why do you want us to start breaking the bank to try and change his mind?

You either want to manage Southampton or you don't. If you don't, okay, here's the door...

**** me Dalek, you're one of the worst melts on the board.

And really, anyone who starts on about "ambition" has little idea about finances and football. Oyston and Blackpool - there you could question ambition. You cannot level that at Saints.

Would love Ron to stay, but if we have to replace him it's got to be Villas-Boas for me - his record over the past six years (Porto and beyond) is remarkably consistent and he would seem to be a good 'fit' potentially - tactically smart and lucid in front of the media. I would also not be unhappy with De Boer, who like AVB is currently out of contract and 'awaiting the next challenge.' I think it's safe to argue that in managerial terms both would be an upgrade on RK when he joined Saints, and let's not forget Southampton FC has been instrumental in strengthening the coaching careers of both RK and MP - we've been as good for them as they have for us!

Villas Boas is damaged goods in the PL and would also see Saints as a step down.

Howe looks the most progressive of the likely hyped candidates but Saints usually think left field.

Genuinely not sure if Howe would ruin his Bournemouth legacy by joining Saints anyway.

AVB isn't going to get a job at any other Prem club at a higher profile than us - the top six aren't going to appoint him. And if he wants cash this is the league. I think he'd jump at it.

Potentially great fit and didn't he get as many points at Spurs as Poch did, or am I making that up?

Agree with the comment about Saints thinking left field

Saints management will have planned for this scenario and will already have candidate(s) in mind.

Wouldn't want

Howe - only managed 1 season in the top level.

Flores - seriously! Hate the way Watford play, had a poor second half of the season.

De Boer - would just be waiting for him to move on.

AVB - does good PowerPoint presentations, but is a sh*t manager.

would want

Emery - no chance of him coming here though.

Pellegrini - knows the league, and seriously over-achieved at clubs in Spain similar in size to us.

He was playing four central midfielders last season so I can see why they might be unimpressed

Why does everyone rate Pellegrini so much he had the most money to spend and only won the league because Steven Gerrard slipped up, his side were poor when it counted this season in the champions league against Madrid/seasons before, plus he's old and not really an up and coming coach that improves players.

Big no from me for him and don't think the club will make that sort of short term appointment.

Agree with this, the money he had to spend, the players he inherited, he should have done much better.

You're talking ****. He got two more.

Pellegrini would be amazing, he showed at Malaga he can annoy the big boys in the league, I think he could help us carry on this fine progression, I think a top 8 finish and a cup win would be achievable with him, Whoever we bring in needs to at worse ensure we finish 8th and give Europa league a fair wack otherwise West Ham and maybe even Everton will grow and we will fall back into midtable or bottom half.

So you're saying a trophy winner/ex-Real Madrid manager wouldn't be an improvement?

Fair enough.

this is the deciding factor for everyone I think.

'if' this happens, then managers of the ilk of Pellegrini, AvB, De Boer are who I'd like us to be linked with. If it happens, we're in a great position to attract a top European/International manager. Let the championship clubs play with the Neville/Giggs experiment.

you know what to make of that, you just want to ;)

I would say that a Guan smile in the middle of Pellegrini AVB De Boer would mean AVB will be the new manager

Good spot!

Whatever happens, let's get it done asap and put ourselves back in a strong position. Don't want any 'search' to drag out the summer whilst everything else is left in limbo.

I'm pretty sure the club know what to do.

Or that the 'if' in the text is in a quotation mark, as is the smiley.....

Ah, a Guan smiley. Not sure what to make of that...!

Nice work! - so this means somebody you mentioned is in contention? (Happy with any of the ones you mentioned)

Really need to wait for Guan to elaborate, could mean anything to be honest!

AVB would make sense given his vast experience in European competitions. He would take the Europa League seriously

I think the club would look for any potential new manager to have European experience, I think as a club we're ready to give this a good crack and become regulars. That's why I don't see Eddie Howe being an option or anyone young/inexperienced.

True, but for now I will go with pangy's elaborate sleuthing :)
