The Get a Grip Thread II

Guided Missile

Recommended Posts

Guys, I don't post as often as I did, but when business allows, I like to take a look at the excellent site Steve Grant et al have built and using the search function, remind myself of how far we have come. This old thread is worth a read, posted just after the match that confirmed our demotion to League 1, the lowest point so far witnessed at St. Marys. It puts everything in perspective and reflects well on the Spirit of Southampton, something lacking in many of the overpaid badge kissers and money grabbers that aren't worthy of our applause. F***'em....

One thing I have noticed is that the number of people who have reacted in the old "meltdown" manner seems to have reduced significantly as time has passed. Whether that's as a result of becoming so weary with it all that they become desensitised to it, or whether it's because the club has managed to continue to progress in a positive fashion in the wake of every setback, I guess that's open to debate, but I think the club has earned a significant amount of trust from a previously-cynical fanbase that it has a number of plans for this situation.

I completely agree, though Jim Steele says in the Echo:

"I've spoken to people who are already talking about returning their season tickets. Like me they're really upset."

See the end of this piece:

I haven't heard of anyone thinking about returning their season tickets. They're waiting to see who is appointed.

This calls for only one thing...

Anyone considering returning their season ticket because of Koeman leaving probably shouldn't have had one in the first place.

On the whole, and after the initial frustration with this situation, the majority of our fans seem quite pragmatic about it which is good to see.

Bit of both I think Steve, I'm certainly in the "there's life after Koeman and the club is in a very strong position", but also, as it has happened before it's kid of expected. Especially given the expectation all season we'll lose Wanyama and Mane, along with Koeman being a maybe.

As I only started reading this board a couple of years ago, can someone explain the background (not literally) to this picture? It crops up a lot and seems to get a lot of people chuckling.

I think they returned their season tickets as they got charged for parking outside the stadium or something when they bought them

The dynamic of this site has evolved over the last couple of years where any thread or discussion around managers/players leaving which is negative in any way is seen as a "meltdown" or people losing grip when any fans of any team anywhere will not always be happy with the prospect of losing good manager and/or players. It's a bit weird.

Yeah, it was when we had the 'introduction' of the parking charges after 15mins at SMS. They had to queue up for a while, came back to a ticket. Handed their season tickets back in disgust.

9 months later, we were promoted after having a great home season.

That doesn't sound so bad to me. From what you've written they handed their tickets back on a point of principle of club policy, not because of a prediction that the team would perform poorly. Am I missing something?

Ah, those were the days, when Dubai Phil rambled on about his golf chums, and Tijuana Tim got on local radio from LA. Where are they now ?

Last I heard they were filming a DVD about Saints called "Dream fans" with a Spanish guy called Javi and an old Saints Academy lad called Jacinto Ela Eyene.

The whinging is done on Twitter now. I never bother looking at that thing, it's appalling.

THAT is the Spirit of Southampton

what a wonderful era that was as a Saints Fan and such a shame this statue wasn't allowed to remain , perhaps we could have kept it on the Kingsland side by the bike sheds

It was called a meltdown because that is exactly what happened. Despite not knowing what the outcome of losing certain personnel would be a number of posters made all kinds of insinuations about the club and those who run it. I can remember a number of unpleasant remarks made about Katharina and her weight. Others were equally vilified. "Meltdown" and "bed wetters" summed it up perfectly.

That was two years ago. Since then, any rumour, post to an article or general discussion around the future which isn't gleaming with positivism is labelled as a meltdown.

There was a meltdown two years ago. There was a meltdown last year. A meltdown has already started this summer and will be underway properly when a few players leave again. No one is saying that people have to be positive about everything, just wait until things pan out before you decide that the end of the world is nigh.

You are right.

Last year was not really a meltdown and actually this one isnt. That is unless we appoint Eddie Howe then I will EFFING WELL LOSE MY SH IT MAN AND LOSE IT BIG.

But I think we're stuck with it for now - we've had other recurring themes on this forum and meltdown is just another one.

No need to wet the bed about it you bedwetting meltdowning meltwetter.

If we appoint David Moyes I will actually buy a season ticket so that I can return it!! ;)

Can you do one for me as well?

I'm not paying the parking fees and am too lazy to walk from the road.

Thanks.

They'd have to go some to return Season Tickets that no-one's even been given yet.

Funnily enough one of the first things Katharina did when Cortese effed off was to remove the parking charge for the first half hour or so. Kirk and co were right in principle about getting charged for the privilege of queuing up to spent a grand on the club, they were just entirely disproportionate and comically pictured. :)

I agree but you're spoiling my plan to obtain a season ticket as I can't afford one at the present. For the last few years I have been going to fewer games. A protest while supported by my out goings has gone totally unnoticed by everyone including KL and my ex wife.

Just claim you're boycotting Rupert Lowe, there are still a few of them around.

To be frank, I dont know how to react.

Sometimes I approach the old meltdown reaction, sometimes I am "meh", sometimes I think "lets get on with it". I suppose since there are no clear indicators of a player exodus related to this yet, my reaction is largely held in check.

The club seems to know what they are doing behind the scenes, though I still have my doubts about the way the PR side of things is managed.
