bjk Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Supposing we're relegated which i personally fear is going to happen and we start next season in league 1 with the same side we go down with and with Poortvliet still in charge do you think we're good enough to come straight back up.I think we'd struggle to beat most teams.
S4INT Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Depends what we've learnt in that time and how we play in the second half of this season... But generally I doubt it, we really need to get into a winning mentality.
Hatch Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 I fear we would go straight through and out the other side.
SaintRobbie Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Honestly. I posted this a couple of days ago but, I went to watch Swindon a couple of months ago - they are struggling at the bottom of League 1. They would beat this team 9 times out of 10 IMHO. So no... whats more I believe we're heading down to League 2 if we do not have a major change in Club policy and senior personalities.
bjk Posted 7 January, 2009 Author Posted 7 January, 2009 Jesus..Saints in league 2 i cant bloody believe its a real possibility.
offix Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Supposing we're relegated which i personally fear is going to happen and we start next season in league 1 with the same side we go down with and with Poortvliet still in charge do you think we're good enough to come straight back up.I think we'd struggle to beat most teams. No. With the current coaching set up, and the current board policies (whether or not forced by finances) we will go straight down to League 2
aintforever Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 We would start of -10 for going into admin so relegation again would be a very real possibility. I think a team of kids would struggle big time in League 1 anyway, it's a lot more physical than the Championship.
Whitey Grandad Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 No, our gates and other income would fall significantly and the overhead of the stadium and academy would become a much bigger proportion of our turnover. Perhaps players would have to pay for representing Saints? Straight through the league and out the bottom with 27 points of penalties, unless we can take 10 of them this season.
bjk Posted 7 January, 2009 Author Posted 7 January, 2009 We could be playing Eastleigh in 2 years time.
SaintRobbie Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 I think a team of kids would struggle big time in League 1 anyway, it's a lot more physical than the Championship. That was part of my Swindon assessment to be honest. League 1 teams are likely to bully them off the ball AND have alot of experienced men. Also add the fact that Lowe will sell on our best players and continue to asset strip the team, assuming he retains more control after administration - which I gather may be a possibility. Asset stripped and full of kids in League 1, with the possibility of Lowe's policy continuing. Oh dear.
Sheff Saint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 We could be playing Eastleigh in 2 years time. If we go down and Eastleigh come up this season (both possible) then Eastleigh would start the FA Cup in qualifying Rd4 and we'd start in Rd1. I'd love to see Eastleigh v Saints in a real match. How odd would that be!
labibs Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 I certainly don't think we would come back up. To get promotion you need to be able to keep it relatively tight at the back and score goals. We can do neither. I don't think we would definitely go straight down to League 1 though. We're not certain to be relegated from the championship, so how can you say we would definitely be in the bottom 4 of the division below? It would be a hell of a struggle though.
Scudamore Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 We'd walk that league ffs. Someone had to say it.
rpb Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Last time we sank that low, we struggled for a while before getting a good team together so I would expect us to do much the same next time...
Danbert Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 We are the new Crewe. They're surving in the 3rd division and I'm sure we would as well.
SaintRobbie Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 We'd walk that league ffs. Someone had to say it.
Mole Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Our youngsters would not be capapble of a top 6 finish in the conference IMO. Therefore i think we'll drop straight through League 1 and be in the old 4th Division in 2010.
Hatch Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 I've seen both Lincoln and Wycombe this season. We are about on par with Lincoln I reckon, Wycombe would beat us.
GeckoSaint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 With no investment it would be very easy for us to do a Bradford
Colinjb Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 We would be in League 2 before you could sneeze. No players would want to join us, the better prospects will be cherry picked and we shall be trying to compete in a pro league with an u18's side.
Colinjb Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 We are the new Crewe. They're surving in the 3rd division and I'm sure we would as well. That actually made me laugh, because it is true. This revelutionary structure Lowe is trying to employ is exactly that Crewe have used for years! Sod using Arsenal as an example because their most succesful teams have infused youth and experience.
buctootim Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Ive drawn some straight line graphs extrapolating the past year onwards for the next 10 years. I can say without doubt we will be in the Tyro League whilst Barclays will be capitalised at slightly less than Eastleigh Credit Union and the Bank of England interest rate will continue to be cut until it is at -346%. Or maybe things will reverse and improve.
West End Saint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 If we get relegated and go into admin with a points penalty we would have no chance of coming straight back up look how Leeds are struggling with gates of 20 to 30 k and how long the likes of Forest and sheff Weds took to get out of that league I am not suggesting we would get relegated again straight away but we would be in for some years in the wilderness for sure
Greenridge Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Not forgetting that a number of our 'stars' would deem League 1 below them and leave....
londonsaint1604 Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Our youngsters would not be capapble of a top 6 finish in the conference IMO. Therefore i think we'll drop straight through League 1 and be in the old 4th Division in 2010. Absolute ********, as are most replies to this thread. The current team would survive league 1 easily.
Saint Billy Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Absolute ********, as are most replies to this thread. The current team would survive league 1 easily. Really! and what do you base this on?
Whitey Grandad Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Absolute ********, as are most replies to this thread. The current team would survive league 1 easily. But we wouldn't have the 'current team'.
Mole Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Absolute ********, as are most replies to this thread. The current team would survive league 1 easily. LOL. You know as much about football as Lowe.
londonsaint1604 Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Really! and what do you base this on? This thread is absurd. We may well survive in the championship still, so to write off our chances in league 1 is pretty daft, and to suggest we would struggle in the conference is total ********.
egreog Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 They would effectively go straight to the 4th Division.........as, if anything, you need strong physical spine in the team in 3rd Division....... and Saints have no spine at all!!
Raven on the wing Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 The sad fact is, after Sundays walkover, you feel it would be better to lock the gates at St Marys for good if that is the best we can offer. We were an embarassment to the ccc and would struggle in Div 1, the kids are simply not good enough - end of !
graymalkin33 Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 No. With the current coaching set up, and the current board policies (whether or not forced by finances) we will go straight down to League 2 You cant go down to league 2 from the championship - you do actually have to spend a season in Division 1 lol - Unless we get found out for illegal doings and could face automatic relegation. I cant see thay happening ....... yet
saint1977 Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Depends on whether we've been in administration - even if we get a buyer part of the terms of coming out would be that we would have a very low wage celing - or if we are still in and -15 in August and cannot sign any players or even take cards at the ticket office.
hughieslastminutegoal Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 We'd walk that league ffs. Someone had to say it. You forgot the smiley/ironic thingy.
VectisSaint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 With no investment it would be very easy for us to do a Bradford City or Park Avenue?
lordswoodsaints Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 didnt most of you predict we would walk this league when we last got relegated?
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 This thread is absurd. We may well survive in the championship still, so to write off our chances in league 1 is pretty daft, and to suggest we would struggle in the conference is total ********. Did you see the loss to Rotherham? think that might be what it is like after Kelvin leaves. The most worrying thing for me is that only a few youngsters ever make the grade from the academy at the same time and we are expecting 8 or 9 of them to be good enough. Most of them should be out on loan in league 1 or 2 clubs. The fact that one of our promising youngsters Jamie White is on the bench for Shrewsbury says it all to me :-(

The fact that one of our promising youngsters Jamie White is on the bench for Shrewsbury says it all to me :-( I agree that the youngsters aren't good enough right now, but they are still learning and there is definitely potential there. I know things are looking very f**king bleak at the moment, and in answer to your question, no I didn't see that game fortunately. However I did see us beat norwich and come very close to beating wednesday. Also I thought we showed good fight against wolves and very nearly scraped a point against them, and I thought we played well at Cardiff and again were very close to a decent result. It's not all bad is what I'm saying.
glkdcdes Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Sadly when, not if we are relegated we will not come straight up. Even if the cretinous Lowe does the decent thing and goes [which i really do not think he has in him to do], we will still find it hard to come straight back. Look at Leeds for instance. Our only chance for next season is for immediate regime change, to give a new management team a chance to get ready for next season.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 I agree that the youngsters aren't good enough right now, but they are still learning and there is definitely potential there. Also I thought we showed good fight against wolves and very nearly scraped a point against them, and I thought we played well at Cardiff and again were very close to a decent result. It's not all bad is what I'm saying. I too have have seen a few decent displays at Derby, Preston and Doncaster and at home to Reading recenty. The thing that worries me most is the coaching team do not seem to be able to organise the defence to defend set pieces and actually mark players etc and we have little goal threat. Apart from that we play some neat and tidy propaganda football in midfield.
ExSt Peter Saint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 No chance. If we go down, we'll have no money (or administration and, therefore, minus points) and all the best players will have gone. We will be left with a few demoralised youngsters who nobody else wants and very few fans willing to pay to go along and watch them.
alpine_saint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Not a chance. It would be one season of mid-table mediocrity as the club adjusted to the reduced finances, then another relegation battle the following season as the latest tranche of cost-cutting came home to roost.
Sheff Saint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Did you see the loss to Rotherham? think that might be what it is like after Kelvin leaves. SaintRobbie Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 The not-so-minor flaw in Rupert's grand plan. Sheff Saint - is anything being discussed over Sheff Utd's delisting as a plc in Sheffield at all? I suspect not much - certainly cant find a great deal on line - because the boardroom is ever so slightly more Club oriented than ours and it has been less of an issue. But just wondering?
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 We would start of -10 for going into admin so relegation again would be a very real possibility. I think a team of kids would struggle big time in League 1 anyway, it's a lot more physical than the Championship. We are more likely to go into Administration this season and get a 10 point deduction so we would start next season in League 1 on a level playing field. Notwithstanding I do think we will struggle in League 1 and our true position in English League football with the current team is in the bottom half of League 2. I used to support Newport County, and they were better than this shower.
L1Minus10 Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Current team wouldn't come back up. With a new manager they'd have a better chance.
N/West Saint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Sheff Saint - is anything being discussed over Sheff Utd's delisting as a plc in Sheffield at all? I suspect not much - certainly cant find a great deal on line - because the boardroom is ever so slightly more Club oriented than ours and it has been less of an issue. But just wondering? I heared on sky sports that Sheff Wed's have had a change of managment for their PLC
corsacar saint Posted 7 January, 2009 Posted 7 January, 2009 Not a hope in hell, look how Leeds are struggling to get up, and also Forest and Wednesday found it very difficult to get up as well.
