Oh and of course I'd forgotten Celtic are now sponsored by Dafabet:

Here's them wearing their betting shirt advertising in Scotland in the Champions League qualifier against Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar. So as suspected it's not a "European rule", idiots at the Essex Chronicle...

and again against Astana in Kazakhstan:

FWIW I guarantee Astana will have to change their number and name colour if they get through to the group stage, UEFA won't be standing for any of that blue-on-blue nonsense.

Nothing to do with UEFA. It's national laws in some countries that ban advertising of betting and alcohol.

Could see it in the euros where "Carlsberg" was replaced on the advertising boards by "Probably" as in their slogan "Probably the best p!$$ in the world".

I'm sure booze advertising has been banned for a number of years in France. Seem to remember years ago Liverpool playing Auxerre and having a different or no sponsor. Not sure why that particular game sticks in my head

Hence the gathering of evidence to debunk it above.

Re: Carlsberg at the Euros, they were also selling the stuff outside the grounds (well, the 0.5% version of it).

I remember Newcastle changed their shirt sponsor when playing Metz (I thought Metz, the article here claims Monaco, that may have been the round after) circa 1996-ish which was the first time I'd seen that - but betting and alcohol sponsorship regulations are not the same in various countries anyway. There are various examples here: http://www.truecoloursfootballkits.com/articles/an-alternative-to-alcohol

No it isn't totally banned in France, but audiovisuel media alcohol advertising is. You can advertise alcohol in printed images like magazines or hoardings but they must always contain the phrase " L'abus d'alcohol est dangereux pour la santé". Sporting and cultural events sponsored by alcohol companies are not permitted. They can however donate funds for no publicité in return.

More cluelessness about the West Ham shirts here too: http://www.joe.co.uk/sport/heres-why-west-ham-didnt-have-sponsors-on-their-shirts-on-thursday-night/76242

FWIW there's no requirement for names on shirts for the qualifiers, because the UEFA rules don't restrict clubs to the UEFA regulations for the qualifiers (other than possibly sponsor size).

Presumably that's so all the smaller sides in the early rounds don't have to fork out for new sets of kit just to play in Europe when the overheads of travelling are expensive enough. UEFA are even ok with clubs wearing national league logos on their shirts in the early rounds.

You may also have noted that Saints wore striped backs against Arnhem and Midtjylland last season. We will not be permitted to do so in the group stages. Just as West Ham won't be permitted not to have shirt names if they get into the group stages.

And FWIW, the reason they didn't have their names on their shirts is probably because they regard it as pre-season, and like Saints, they have a set of kit made up for pre-season without names on the back - because Premier League rules are that you don't have to announce shirt name/numbers until the start of the season and they don't want people to assume anything and get their shirts printed with something wrong.

99.5% p!$$ instead of the usual 95% then. Stuff is a good description because it is most certainly not beer.

Interesting link, these laws on alcohol advertising have been going on for longer than I thought.

I remember Vitesse home game last season where there was no alcohol being sold because of UEFA regulation- loved the abuse some fans were giving the stewards because of it despite it not being their fault

I think that was the most disappointing bit for me - we'd just been to Salzburg and Rotterdam pre-season enjoying a beer with the match, and then the bloody UEFA games there's a stadium ban even for the qualifiers.

No doubt they'll have forgotten that again by the time the first home group game comes around and the stewards will get it in the neck again.

Mind you after the Euros I'm not going to moan about people smoking in the loos at half time as much, there was one with a sly fag on the go near us in the crowd at every Euros match despite it being just as against the law as in England and Wales.

The draw feels so far away. Really hope the first game is a home one, need more time to organise a trip away with work.

I've booked all six dates off of work (Wednesday - Friday) but work are aware that I'll only need three of them. The others will be cancelled as holiday as I wont need them for the home ties

Got a letter from Saints today telling me that I cannot have my season ticket seat in block 9 for Europa league games as UEFA require a miniumum number of seats in the main stand. My seat is about 2 away from the corporate seats.

Apparently I get first dids on any other non season ticket seats instead.

A bit frustrating but not too fussed - would have been nice to have been told before but wouldnt have made any difference to me renewing.

Anyone else impacted

There's also Cork City and Aberdeen as well, who play on Thursday

I'd be quite happy with Cork City or Dundalk in our group , so hope they both end up going through, quite a few Irish saints but not sure how much of a warm welcome we'd get from the locals based on the stories of those who went to Limerick away.

Pot 1 - Inter Milan

Pot 2 - TBC

Pot 3 - Southampton FC

pot 4 - Dundalk

Having been to the San Siro to see Inter v Torino last year I'd be pretty annoyed if Saints drew them...

Amazing achievement. I'd quite like to see us play an Irish team. Although rather Scottish. Can Celtic wind up in our group? I'm just assuming they'll mess up their CL campaign.

Celtic can definitely end up in our group. If they lose their CL 3rd Qualifier they go into the EL Play Off Round and will need to win to get to the EL Group Stages, OR if they win in this round of the CL and then lose their CL Play Off game they drop directly into the EL Group Stages, and their coefficient of 35.335 will almost certainly put them in Pot 2 - ours is 16.756, likely to be Pot 3 (it was last year). Plus the restriction on playing teams from the same nation doesn't apply because it refers to UEFA nations, so England/Scotland/N Ireland/Wales are treated as independent nations for the purposes of football.

I think you'll be in the minority, San Siro is top of most people I know's wish list

Think I'd prefer Fiorentina: better cultural sights to see, and food; I'd probably take a few days for a city like that. No complaints about Milan, mind you.

Yeah, it's alright... Milan as a whole is pretty dull actually. Trams are good though. I'd prefer Schalke, Bilbao, or Florence (or Roma or Alkmaar if they drop in). Not sure about Zenit, not so keen on us maybe playing Anderlecht or Fenerbahce, and I've been to Braga - but it was decent and a mad ground, if a relatively long way from the town. Every possibility Sparta Prague or Monaco could pop up in Pot 1 (or failing that Pot 2) as well, and I quite fancy those. Steaua again would just be annoying.

Nobody fancying trips to Astana or the teams in the Caucuses? Or what about the 3 teams in Israel?

No I'm only interested if Saints Away Travel are running a coach which includes a stop at a Chocolate factory near Bruge.

Joking aside I'd love to get a draw like that or Israel although would be put off by high costs.

I've done a fair few of the grounds so rather than pick new places my thoughts are more around which grounds I'd like to see Saints in.

Russia / Turkey or Serbia would be a laugh but I'm not sure our fans are ready for that particular challenge.

~Osmanlispor currently under investigation for irregularities so may not progress further

Updated with scores from 1st leg. Not too many surprises that would change my predictions too much.

In terms of the UK/RIO teams -

-Aberdeen probably 50/50, will have to score in Slovenia to have any chance

-West ham should overturn NK Domzale's first leg league in their first game at the Olympic Stadium, especially as they have an away goal

-Cork will need to replicate Dundalk's heroics to get through vs Genk (1-0 down). Probably a round too far for them.

A few shock results in the Champions League. Anderlecht, BATE Borisov, Fenerbahce, Olympiakos, Shakhtar Donetsk and Sparta Prague, all UCL regulars, dropping down to the Europa League.

There are only 3 teams in the Champions League play-off round with a lower co-efficient than us

Just for a quick heads up, last year coefficients above 52 were Pot 1, 32-51 Pot 2, 15-31 Pot 3 and below 15 Pot 4. Ours is 16.756 this year.

I'm still fairly sure we'll be in Pot 3. There are always loads of CL sides with higher coefficients, but there are also loads of EL qualifiers who can't be ranked above us and we only need 12 of them to get through to fill up Pot 4.

Thursday night will be interesting but the draw for the EL and CL Playoff Rounds will tell us how many upsets we actually need for Pot 3.

Since the Europa has had it's current format no one with our coefficient would have been in Pot 4. One season it would even have been good enough for Pot 2. We will almost certainly be in Pot 3.

Monaco would be very dull.

Besides I've been to watch football there. Many, many years ago (er... nearly 40, come to think of it) I got a cheap flight via dad (who was BA) and had a few days in Nice. Wandered over to Monaco on the train for a mooch, see the marine museum etc. By pure chance I noticed a poster on a ramshackle open ground and found out they were playing Nice that evening so got a cheap ticket, and then got the train full of football fans back to Nice that night. Chatting to the lads on the open terraces they were telling me that the team only survived based on money from the casino, and judging by the small derby crowd that seemed true.

I don't want Anderlecht for similar reasons (1977 Chanson d'Amour, dumdiduddidum..) although Brussels is a nice enough city.

Apart from those, anywhere in Italy, Spain or somewhere easy to get to. I've got nothing against exotic locations but they do appear a bit expensive to get to and as I like to wander around on my own have to use a bit of common-sense. Given the homophobia and nasty types there perhaps not Russia.

Monaco isnt that bad - its good for seeing how the other half lives and deciding you arent missing much. I went to a (work) black tie fundraiser at the Hotel de Paris and stood on the terrace drinking and watching the Lambourghini and Ferrari drivers do a circuit round the gardens and fountain trying to out pose each other. Nice in one direction and Villefranche in the other are both close on the train and well worth visiting.

Worth remembering it's split in two sections, so for example Man City can't be drawn against Dundalk.

Seeded - Viktoria Plzen, RB Salzburg, Celtic, APOEL, Legia Warsaw

Unseeded - Dinamo Zagreb, Ludogorets, Copenhagen, Hapoel Be'er-Sheva, Dundalk

No games televised tonight?

I would have thought that BT SPORT would have shown the Europa league game similar to them showing the 3rd round qualifiers last year. But no.

Aberdeens Europa game is on Premier Sports

In the qualifying rounds, TV rights are sold by the home club. BT Sport said that for some reason West Ham didn't make the game available.

they obviously did not want this to be the big televised opening game at the the new ground
