Turkish Posted 15 May, 2016 Share Posted 15 May, 2016 We were told for much of the season that we should wish we were them. We were told that you can't keep selling your best players and improving, in fact that was the opening gambit on many posts in the early weeks of the season as our rebuilt team found its feet. Everton in particular were a shining light as to what we should aspire to be. Is this still the case or do we now accept that as a club we are in great hands, we have a strategy that works and actually other clubs should wish they were us? Plastic Posted 15 May, 2016 Share Posted 15 May, 2016 Still the case. Everton held their nerve and rejected the paltry sum of £40m for their so-so defender stones, thereby demonstrating what a massive club they are. This type of stand is crucial to maintaining status and league position. Probably.
nta786 Posted 15 May, 2016 Share Posted 15 May, 2016 So why did we wish were the following clubs? Stoke: Just because they bought Shaqiri right? Watford: Because they bought like 14 cheap players in, right? Everton: For spending £28m on Lukaku, not selling Stones despite a reported £50m, right? Palace: Because they bought Cabaye, right? All 4 were on decent form too before Christmas, Palace I think were fifth after they beat us in December.
CB Fry Posted 15 May, 2016 Share Posted 15 May, 2016 I seriously doubt this will stop any of the usual utter dins drivelling on about net-spend like a acne ridden Football Manager geek come the summer. But some people never learn.

SaintTex Posted 15 May, 2016 Share Posted 15 May, 2016 Still the case. This type of stand is crucial to maintaining status and league position. Probably.it is an interesting point. If Stones had been a Southampton player and £40m had been offered, it would have been accepted and he would have been off to Chelsea. And that £40m would have bought 3 really good players strengthening the squad. Everton dug in. They chose poorly and finished at the back half of the table. We would be a much different club right now (and likely worse for it) if we had dug in and retained Shaw, Chambers, Lambert, Lovren and Lallana 2 years ago. actually if you look at everyone we have lost in the last 2 years, who has not had a dip in career form? only Alderweireld and I guess you could include Poch in that.
