Great thing about Forster and VVD contracts (more so than Davis, Fonte, Yoshida before) is they will definitely have had interest so big coup that they feel they can progress more with Saints, even if not for the full 5/6 years.

Much better working this way and should avoid the Clyne, Wanyama scenarios of players running their deals down. Good learning from Les!

Massive signing. Forster was entering his last 2 years and it could have been a very uncomfortable Summer if one of the big boys went looking for a new GK if he hadn't extended. Also hard to see the "new direction" being bad if players of his quality and importance are willing to commit to the club.

I suspect the 'new direction' is probably nothing more than not having silly targets on the academy like 50% of the first team as graduates or whatever it was. Looking at the next couple of years, it appears we're lacking home grown Chamberlain, Shaw, Walcott, Bale quality so may buy in more instead.

Just a hypothesis though.

Lets face it JWP isn't really a premier league level player & hasn't improved in the time he's been here but a decent backup I guess. Pleased about forster he is a good keeper in general the only thing i find frustrating is he is a good point blank saves but cant seem to get the simple things right i.e kicks out of play a lot & not very good when one on one with a player like the man city goal but i guess that's a fault most keepers have!

Bertrand will be approached. Klopp is a fan though. And no, I'm not trolling.

Hah, well I think some of these players need to look at what ex-Saints are doing elsewhere. I wouldn't say Clyne is looking the player he was and he's probably done the 'best'.

True. But he has already played in a domestic final and is set to play in a European final on Wednesday.

That, plus a bigger pay packet, would probably make him feel it was a good move.

But Bertand has already been there, and won finals as well.

Clyne has had a very good season. The scousers I know say he's a 8/10 every week. Probably been their most consistent player this season. Lovren is now kicking on and probably first choice CB and Lallana, while still expensive, has justified some of this transfer tag. In terms of honours and big games, they've enjoyed greater success than we have over the same period. Any player who half-trusts their ability and will still fancy their chances at a bigger club. The trackrecord really isn't that bad, except for the obsessed who stalk the defectors watch thread.

He'll have been asked to mention the ambition of the club.

BE FAIR.....we employ these guys to play football. Few of them are natural media geniuses. Forster's OK as a goalie - that suits me.

JWP knows how to handle " sound-bites " but one or two others may need feeding the answers ....before they get the question.

I often wonder how many Prem. players passed there GCSE's? Half of our squad don't have even English as their first language, so don't expect enthralling replies.

Polite conversation is one thing, but a Q&A in a foreign language can be a minefield for some players, and even managers.

All things considered, Forster did OK . (Yes ....I know he's English ).

And by the way,....the fact that all the contracts are 5 years, which fits in nicely with the 5 year plan is NOT a coincidence.

by which time we will have a team composed of 50% Academy graduates.......:D

Excellent news and well done to the club.tying players down, I assume, on decent pay rises.

Hopefully this is the new direction..paying decent money for our decent players and losing the selling/stepping stone label.

Still think there is more benefit letting Wanyama run down his contract than selling him cheap this summer.

Any news about Tadic? Current contract till 2018 and as our most creative player deserves an extension.

Considering what has happened regarding players jumping ship in the last couple of seasons, this, coupled with the new VVD contract is an immense......hold on.....IMMENSE statement of intent from the club! Saints are obviously very serious now about holding onto key players, and anyone that leaves in the summer, well, they must have REALLY wanted to go.

Players like VVD and Forster who have options wouldn't sign big extensions unless they were happy about the manager situation.

Good news that we secured our GK and really sounds like good news re the big Ron situation.

We've signed IMO our two best players, the two players we would currently struggle to replace the most I think. Also ones that should only get better as well, of course it doesn't stop them being tempted by a bigger club but probably means at least another year from them and we can make it very hard for suitors to get them.

I'd add Mane to that list as well, if we can sign him as well then that is the 3 key players, I think Wanyama is more easily replaceable.

So Mr X on the whole you think we have a pretty crap set of players. Still fingers X'd we'll sign a couple more lads in the summer who will drag us down even further :-(

Still convinced Wanyama will stay? I'm really struggling to see it, surely he'd have signed a new contract by now if he really wanted too? I would have thought Mane was more likely to stay another year than Vic

I'm convinced that Wanyama will still be here, not because he wants to stay, but because those interested in him will not be the TOP 4 clubs........whatever that means now.......that he is interested in.

I may be worng and the feeling might be a bad curry I had 'up norf' .
