spyinthesky Posted 2 May, 2016 Share Posted 2 May, 2016 Thought it was an OK evening in front of a full house Some bits quite funny eg the WBA chef Good memories of the day, which will forever be etched on my memory. Really came home to me how much the passing of 40 years since have impacted on our collective lives looking at the team on the stage and a few familiar faces in the audience.. Of the players, Jim McCalliog looked to have worn quite well whilst Mel Blythe seemed rather bemused by the whole event Perhaps a good time to close the book on the 1976 Cup Win and hope that the next generation get the chance to experience the fantastic occasion that we all enjoyed at the time I guess that only around 50% of those at Wembley on the day are around to tell the tale which is a sad thought. chocco boxo Posted 2 May, 2016 Share Posted 2 May, 2016 I won't be around for the 80th anniversary that Mike Osman is planning , that's for sure.

Mowgli Posted 3 May, 2016 Share Posted 3 May, 2016 Why close the book? Awful comment! Not really. I was there in 76 and really enjoyed (still do in terms of memories) it but I yearn for more silverware which will mean we don't have to rely on that one moment in time to celebrate any success. So I sort of understand what the OP means.
ladysaint Posted 3 May, 2016 Share Posted 3 May, 2016 I was at the Mayflower and at the match in 76. Really enjoyed the 40th celebrations, enjoyed the event at the Mayflower but thought it played too much on rivalry with them down the road which to me wasn't necessary. Jim McCalliog still looked very fit and Hughie Fisher never seems to age a day.

I agree, I dont think the OP means forgetting the day, no one will who experienced it, but perhaps its time to close the book on celebrations such as this and move on to the possibility of winning it again or maybe winning the Premiership which would be an even bigger event. Billy Thanks for this as it more adequately describes the thoughts behind my comments. None of us will ever forget the day (and it should always remain part of the club's history) but it is probably time to move on from the celebrations we had on Sunday As a long standing fan I think the club has achieved a great deal in the past 50 or so years but we do need something tangible for the newer generation of fans to celebrate

It was lovely to see Hughie really enjoying the Bus Tour and really getting involved with everything with a beaming smile. No sour grapes or anything at being the one who missed out as sub, but at least he had a great view of the match.

My first ever Saints game was the 3rd round FA cup replay (I think?) where I was dragged reluctantly by friends (had no interest in footy at the time), and Fisher scored a rare goal in the final minutes - was totally hooked on the mighty Saints since that day - my hero :-)
