The Day we won the cup

Belatedly realised I've got two stalls tickets for this on Sunday night 7pm at the Mayflower as a birthday prez. Don't really know what its going to be like, im not one for a cringefest and tbh im a bit embarrassed to attend but they were a gift so I have to go and say what a great time I had ....I think a few of the players Lawrie Mac etc will be there being heroic and telling stories and if ive had a few might get into it a lose my inhibitionms ( bit like a normal match then!)

Anyone else from this forum attending? Is it naff to wear a shirt? Or de rigueur? If I had a 1976 special id bloody well wear it but i dont. Should one be a bit ****ed before attending? Will there will periodic owtsgmi filtering out the theatre? :-)

think you're taking things too seriously mate. I mean, yes its a bit 'line the pockets' event, but then what isn't? Its a show, been to the anniversary one and the MLT one too, they were okay. I only paid 20 quid for tickets at the back of the upper balcony, think 40 was a bit much.

If you're that embarrassed about celebrating pretty much the only proper thing this club has won (and it really mattered back then) then perhaps you shouldn't go.

I spent the morning with L Mac, Mel Blyth, Jim McCalliog and Hughie Fisher today co hosting the Julian Clegg show on Solent and I think this anniversary is going to be mega and well worth attending. Tommy Doc and the ref, Clive Thomas are attending and Mike Osman has really pushed the boat out. Think it will be great if the show this morning was anything to go by, everyone was on great form and I reckon this will be the last time. Enjoy the night.

I have tickets - I also went to the 'Greatest Ever' show and the MLT one with Ed Chamberlain.

My take is - why wouldn't you want to enjoy a bit of revelling in the memories, finding a bit more about people and the club I've supported all my life and generally having an evening of humour and Saints banter?

Some people wore shirts, others didn't - there were chants, singing (spontaneous as Franny, MLT and many others came on) - this time it's about the legends that won the cup...I doubt if many of them (or me) will be around for the 50th so I'm making the most of it!

i was there but this thread seemed to be saying i should be embarrassed by it' date=' all i can say to people is imagine Cardiff in 03 and then treble the feeling, that was 76[/quote']

I was there too. I am not embarrassed by it at all. Such moments come very rarely in sport. Hopefully one such will happen this weekend or next with Leicester.. I will be sixty at the end of next year and was about to do my A Levels in 1976 and the details and emotions of those days between 1st and 3rd May are still imprinted in me for ever.

Isn't it time to move on? I love the stories I love watching the goal and Whilst it's the greatest thing to happen to our club it's also quite tin pot to celebrate what is effectly a reminder to everyone how unsuccessful we've been for a club of our size. 40 years isn't even a particularly big landmark, 25 years I get, 50 too but 40? Just strikes me as very small time and the constant it's x number of years since we one the fa cup quite tedious. Time to move on and change the mindset.

I like that word you use, tedious. It's quite apt.

A few of the team have already passed away and if you wait till 50 years there will unfortunately probably be very few of them left in a fit state to talk about those times. This may be the last ever getrtogether of all those faces.

Good morning fellow Saints. Just for the record there was No disrespect to anyone intended by my OP - i wrote that when i was considering whether Saints fans were still proud of who we are rather than what we have in our trophy cabinet. Trophy lust is just another exhibition of materialism. We are all guilty of that though sometimes and just because we only won it once in 1976 it does not make it a day and an event of importance that should be celrbrated, yes even 40 years to the day onwards. I think the most telling response was one that said that the opportuinity to get the players officials managers together will not recure- so, much like that day in 1965, tonight is also unmissable for a Saints fan. i was not there in 1976 but I will enjoy being there and really understanding the day & background history in personal detail. Thank you for the reality check, Saints forum posters. X

Went last night, along with lots of other over 50s. Was a good evening and brought back lots of happy memories. We are seriously overdue another good cup run.

Only absentee was Peter Rodrigues. He did a video link, but didn't look too well.
