aussiesaint20 Posted 28 April, 2016 Share Posted 28 April, 2016 Hi guys, Thought you might be interested in an idea I’m planning for next season. As the title suggests, I'll be aiming to follow our 38 Premier League games from 38 different countries – meeting Saints fans at every stop and sharing their stories, one match at a time. If you’d like to hear more about the idea I’ve put together a short video that better explains the concept - the password to watch is 38in38. Also, if you’d like to take part in the project please let me know – the more Saints fans I can meet along the way the better. As well as meeting with and promoting our supporter groups around the world, I aim to cover the club’s historic moments from a global perspective. Through meeting with former players and fans now living abroad it should be possible to revisit almost all of the key SFC moments from the last 75 years. I'll also aim to head further back in time be retracing Charles Miller’s famous arrival in São Paulo and speaking to Athletic Bilbao about the Southampton origins of their red & white stripes. Would be keen to hear your thoughts on the idea and if it’s something you’d be interested in following throughout next season? Cheers, Trev 38in38 VIDEO

Saxon Posted 28 April, 2016 Share Posted 28 April, 2016 Sounds like a really really awesome idea. Hopefully you get some decent support from the club media dept. because this could make a really really interesting documentary. The amount of effort it sounds like you're going to put in deserves some significant effort on their part I think to make sure its top quality. This also sounds like the sort of thing that is right up our media department's street. Have you been in contact with them at all? Your pitch video is a very good sell and it looks like you have everything pretty much mapped out so I'd be surprised honestly if they didn't want to get on board this with you. Have you decided how long to do each "episode"? Good luck with it anyway, sounds very cool! I'm sure this would be popular on the youtube channel! Really appreciate you taking the time to watch the video. Haven't been able to get in touch with the media department yet, although one of the Swiss fans did mention it to Ralph last week and I'm told he was 'blown away by the idea'. I've become good friends with John Sydenham since his move to Melbourne and he's very keen to take part in the first leg/match of the trip. He also put me in touch with Terry who is heading over from SA for the Palace match (and SKD's testimonial) and has said he'll talk to the club about 38in38. I'd like to include as much fan interaction as possible throughout the trip - would you guys be interested in Q+A's with former Saints now living abroad? You get to come up with the questions and I'll ask them (within reason..) The aim is to go about the trip in a very 'Southampton Way' by doing more with less; cheap flights, buses, and staying with Saints fans. In regards to the content and delivery, it would definitely help to get the club on board for that professional finish. The plan at the moment is for regular updates on social media, as well as an image and video rich blog post for each country. Have also had confirmation from radio stations (in the U.K. and Aus), football websites and blogs that are keen to cover 38in38. Although with the club on board, as well, it certainly would expand the scope of possibilities.
PhilippineSaint Posted 29 April, 2016 Share Posted 29 April, 2016 Looking at your map you will be in the Philippines for the 10th game. Obviously you will need to put more details out there nearer the time of each country hop and game but it sounds like a bloody good idea.

L1Minus10 Posted 29 April, 2016 Share Posted 29 April, 2016 Brilliant idea. Go for it. the club will be keen because they're all about expanding the knowledge of the club globally. The more awareness there is of pockets of SFC fans globally, the better.

eddie Posted 29 April, 2016 Share Posted 29 April, 2016 I am in Switzerland. Might move to Jordan permanently in a couple months. I'd happily put you up in either place, and bring you watch local teams or else play in local games with Swiss or Jordanian lads that I play with. aussiesaint20 Posted 2 May, 2016 Author Share Posted 2 May, 2016 Will you post regular updates here? Definitely! Have almost been on here for 10 years now. Can't forget my roots I'll make sure to post a more detailed plan for each country in the weeks leading up to the match. Where an ex-Saint is involved I'll also be asking you guys for questions in advance and posting the resultant video. Thank you to everyone for the positive feedback, it's really appreciated! I'll certainly be doing my best to include as many overseas Southampton fans and groups as I possibly can.
Cyprussaints Posted 14 May, 2016 Share Posted 14 May, 2016 Hi aussiesaint. I'm new to the forum, but have been a saints fan all my life. I live in Southampton until 2011 and then moved to Cyprus (where my parents are originally from. The sound of following saints from 38 different countries sounds great! You are always welcome to Cyprus where every game is shown live. Le,t me know if you need further info. UP THE SAINTS!!

Tony F Posted 15 May, 2016 Share Posted 15 May, 2016 Great scheme Trev but in some countries I would suggest you will be hard pressed to find somewhere to watch the match as not all countries stream Premier League football - especially if they have established and well-followed leagues of their own. I am living in Rome and the only way to get to see Saints matches (except by travelling to UK) is via "dodgy streams" and the like - which is far from reliable. Maybe you should start up a sweepstake on how many of the 38 you actually manage to watch live......???

Certainly more about 'following' the games than watching them - although that will always be the preference. That part of 38in38 is all about seeing and sharing how our fans follow Southampton from different parts of the world. During the Championship-League One-Championship years my best friend was certainly Saints Player! Contrary to Steve's comment above I'm not a bottomless pit of money, unfortunately. I made a Kickstarter page for the project, but may have left the run a little late. I've set up a series of rewards for any contributors and the whole process will be inclusive throughout. It's an all-or-nothing funding model so nothing gained, nothing lost. It's not the ideal approach but contact to the club, and their sponsors, has so far fallen on deaf ears. If anyone has Katharina's number.. Man City's version.
