Romeu vs Clasie

Both games I've seen live this season when Romeu has played, he was one of our best players. I think it's fair to say that he has often been in the mix for MOTM when he has played most of the game. I recall Clasie having one game where people said he was our best player (I didn't see it), but generally the consensus seems to be "is Clasie even playing?" Or "what has Clasie done today?"

It feels like we are persisting with Clasie because he has demonstrated a high level elsewhere and the hope is that eventually it will click for him. I'm not convinced but won't write him off as there is clearly ability there, it's just whether he can do it in this league. Romeu is looking like money well spent but his drawback may be that he is not dominant enough to replace Wanyama, but not box-to-box/agile enough to complement him either.

Victor was carrying the injury from last week (hospital) then got taken out by Hutton? yesterday thats why he got taken off, not because he wasn't interested FGS!!. Jesus some people….. see anything and twist it to suit stupid petty agendas.

Ron said he took him off because he wasn't playing well and he didn't like the way the midfield was working.

Romeu. At least he can tackle and do some defensive work. Contrary to the myth, passing stats for Wanyama, Romeu and Clasie actually show that Wanyama (rating 6.98) is the best passer and Clasie (6.70) is the worst. I think some people notice Clasie's passing more because it's all he does, whereas Wanyama and Romeu do a lot of tackling and intercepting as well during a game. Fans of Clasie say he makes telling passes, but that appears to be a myth too as I can't recall him having a single assist all season.

Clasie plays FAR more high-risk forward passes than Wanyama, who spends most of the game knocking simple short passes. Those stats prove nothing in isolation.

Does he actually? Everyone says he does but a lot of the time he plays relatively simple passes. Easily his most frequent pass is to Fonte or VVD.

I wouldn't say Clasie is an especially creative passer, more neat and tidy.

I thought he was going to be more of a pass and move player from watching the Feyenoord clips but he largely sits very deep and drops in to the back four when VVD goes forward. Which is perfectly fine. But he isnt a huge influence in our attacking play through creative passing IMO.

Also, I only want Wanyama to play simple passes. That is his game because he is there more for his off the ball work. On it he is much better when ge plays very simple. No requirement for him to be more adventurous because he isn't really capable of it.

The WhoScored? stats also say:

Jordy Clasie

Characteristics

+ Strengths

Passing

Strong

Taking set-pieces Strong

Tackling Strong

Ball interception Strong

- Weaknesses

Aerial Duels Weak

Jordy Clasie's Style of Play

Likes to shoot from distance

Plays the ball off the ground often

Likes to play long balls - this will be the reason for his lower pass completion rate.

Victor Wanyama Characteristics

+ Strengths

Aerial Duels Strong

Tackling Strong

- Weaknesses

Discipline Weak

Victor Wanyama's Style of Play

Commits fouls often

Nothing about passing in Wanyama's skillset at all.

When I was watching him at the start of the season I noticed that Clasie tended to try to play a forward pass towards the attacking midfielders/striker(s) when he got the ball. Can't say I've been watching him much recently, but I'd be surprised if we'd coached that out of him when it was probably one of the things that made him stand out compared to our other midfielders.

I think you're right that he's not a creative (e.g. number 10-style) assisting passer, but he does help transition the ball from back to front more quickly.

Romeu is certainly decent enough, but tends to lose possession too easily I think. Clasie looks rather lightweight to me and hasn't really made the kind of impact in the Premier League we were led to believe he would when signed. Okay, he might do that next season I suppose, but I can recall EXACTLY the same being said about Gaston time and time again on here and let's face it that particular 'bus' never did arrive did it?

Perhaps the best way to objectivly evaluate how well players have really done in the game is too see how much interest other clubs show in pinching them from us - frankly I don't see the likes of MUFC or Liverpool etc beating down uncle Les's door this summer offering us huge amounts of cash for either Clasie or Romeu.

Not so long ago - if you were careful - £5m or £8m would have got you a pretty special player. Nowadays it seems that kind of money is required to secure the services of average (if not journeyman) PL players. As fans we probably have to get used to that fact of football life and not expect too much from every 'next big thing' we sign.

We aren't going to progress if we keep picking players there who are very unlikely to ever score. Clasie makes Davis look prolific.

His current role doesn't give him much opportunity to score. As he's a keen eye for a pass and is energetic i was thinking it may be worth trying him there as we can't afford a really good number 10, but maybe not.
