Have the smugglers moved closer to the immigrants targets?

http://news.sky.com/story/1678475/migrants-picked-up-from-a-dinghy-off-dover

A mile or two across to a Greek island is a little different to navigating the busiest shipping route in the world, it would be a disaster waiting to happen.

Some intent on coming to Britain are quoted five-figure sums to make the trip by air, while others are even believed to have spent as much as £12,000 to travel from France in inflatable boats.

Are smugglers flying immigrants over in small aircraft or something?

£12K for a dinghy, that is so ridiculous it can't possibly be true.

Has anyone any ideas about the international rules on shipping? If a ship from, say, South Korea spots a dinghy in distress in mid-Channel is it duty bound to help? If so, does that mean those in the dinghy are the responsibility of South Korea? And if the SK ship ignores the distressed dinghy is it liable for any neglect?

I say 'mid-Channel' but does the same question apply should the spotting happen in French or UK waters?

if you respond to a MAYDAY call, no matter where you are...you are bound by law to assist

Yeah, but if you're in a massive tanker with a stopping distancve of who knows what or a vessel limited in its ability to manoeuvre you might just do a Mayday Relay and pass the message on to someone who might be able to help..

Good point. Only if the distress call remains unanswered. To bring it back to the OP, I suspect these big rubber rings with migrants on board will have a hand held radio at best and do not leave sea area A1 maybe?

Migrants have already died trying to swim the English Channel.

That is a sad read. What a mess.

The piece indicates there are smugglers in Calais who may be using small boats, but nothing concrete.

Britain and France need to act swiftly to make sure smugglers don't start profiteering the Channel, otherwise it could be the next Aegean or Mediterranean disaster:

thing is, we wont. what needs to be done is to completely turn away boats carrying migrants and remove them from the border.

that will never happen

Thank goodness for that. Can't see them getting very far.

That went down like a lead balloon GBoy.

Possibly because there have been any number of concrete boats built over the years...not sure about lead balloons though. Could be worth trying to fly one across the Channel, at least if it doesn't get off the ground they wont drown

Sadly, that doesn't always work. :( I wish I could elaborate on that.
