Everton - Southampton Build Up Thread

Everton will always be our bogey team after 84 and the fact that they had the hex on us for ages in the 80s and 90s. These things scar you as a fan.

If we lose Europe is dead IMO but if we can win then Villa (a) is next (win - surely?) and I feel we could go into that Citeh game with a bit of momentum and get the win......then things might start to get interesting.

Bottom line - this is a must win if we are to have any chance of Europe (barring some freak set of cup results\table positions\divine intervention).

I'm still left mentally scared from the 8 - 0 to Everton in Nov 1971. That afternoon I was competing in the Southampton Cubs Totem Pole competition for 2nd Southampton at Shirley Warren School, we won but the first thing I asked my dad was how did Saints do, when he told me the result I remember feeling so deflated. A life sentence of being a Saints fan ................

He was; but he was better than Dan Harding.

Danny Fox was the worse left back we have seen in a long long time which makes Harding better...by quite a way...

Back on subject, a good win for us today to prove our credentials for top 7... A northerly biting wind in the Northern outpost of Liverpool doesn't bode well for Pelle.... If he doesn't 'turn up' send on Rodrigues and drag Pelle off..

SAINTS: Forster; Martina, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand; Clasie, Wanyama; Long, Mané, Tadić; Pellè.

Bench: Stekelenburg, Cédric, Yoshida, Romeu, S. Davis, Ward-Prowse, Rodriguez.

No Ross Barkley or Romelu Lukaku in the starting line-up for Everton.

Cedric really is out of favour

should cause them a few problems today. with half of their team out

To be fair, Martina played very well last game and Cedric had a pretty poor game before that; can't say I'm surprised he's on the bench.

Fox was out of his depth in the Premier League, but did very well in our Championship promotion season. Fox played ahead of Harding for good reason and had a large number of assists that season.

He was a really good crosser of a ball and did well for us in the Championship we did get promoted the year he played for us so I would say he was an excellent buy

Or, he's being rotated depending on form. I've seen enough to be confident in him improving in the future. Clyne wasn't at his best in his first season for us either.

I think we need to be better than bringing in players now who need a season to 'bed in'

for serious european ambitions and all that

There is no club who nails it right away with every signing. Not a single one in the world.

we sold nearly £30m worth of right backs and replaced them with about £5m worth. as it shows and neither of them can hold down the place and/or need a season to bed in

hope we can have a better hit rate in the market this summer when we lose Vic/Mane

The rightbacks we sold cost us what, £1million? £2million at most? We were never going to spend money like for like or even close for replacements, anyone who thinks we will do that is mental. It's a huge part of our philosophy to make a big profit on players - until we can bring in top level commercial revenue or finish in the top 4, that's not going to change.

Its because we have a squad...

Is it a fact we will lose Vic and Sadio...nope, possible that is all..
