Everton - Southampton Build Up Thread

Martinez is fighting for his job, he's got no choice.

Personally, I think there is a power struggle there between the players and manager.

They don't play like a team which lacks motivation or unity, just one that can't defend. That's what Martinez teams are like, it seems.

I'm amazed there's not more talk about him being sacked. He deserves credit for maintaining such a strong squad but criticism for failing to make the most of it.

The Everton forum is pretty clear, they want him out

Are Everton at risk of losing their squad? Lukaku, Baines, Stones, Barkley, Coleman, McCarthy (?),.... They'd get plenty of money.

Hasn't there been a fair bit of fairly public disagreement between Martinez and some of the players? Baines having to apologise in the papers last week for "criticism".

Definitely not a happy camp.

Can see Martinez going in the summer. Heard a few Everton fans saying they want Koeman.

To be fair most of them wanted Moyes out at various points too. They're all as knee-jerk as everyone else, but with the club tending towards longer-term appointments it just gets to the point where everyone's moaning about something.

Don't get me wrong, I think Martinez is doing a good job... for Saints. Not so much for Everton.

We have to win this. They walked right through us in the first match of the season when our squad was still not gelling. It was painful to watch.

for me one of the worst games of the season - I know liverpool was more shameful but the everton result came when there was still a lot of optimism to finish top 6 this season with a new squad. brought me right back down to earth.

Koeman: "Austin will be unavailable for a week due to minor knee injury. Steven Davis is back in contention for Everton"

any news on Shane Long ? could do with him being available to run at their centre backs Jamie Vardy style on the break

I think our midfield and wings will utterly bamboozle them. Clasie, Wanyama, even Mane/Long/Tadic/Rodriguez, or some combo, will give them plenty of work.

Could be 0-2 saints, maybe even 3.

I forsee no problems with this game

http://talksport.com/football/roberto-martinez-fears-everton-could-be-without-aaron-lennon-leighton-baines-and-ross

Aaron Lennon, Leighton Baines and Ross Barkley are all major fitness doubts for Everton's home game against Southampton on Saturday.

Barkley and Lennon were both forced off in the second half of Wednesday's goalless draw at Crystal Palace with respective hamstring and groin injuries, while Baines also limped off the field after the game.

And Toffees boss Roberto Martinez confirmed the three Englishmen may not be available for the visit of the Saints.

"Ross [barkley] and Aaron Lennon have been accumulating a lot of minutes and I think Ross had a knock at the end and couldn't move freely," said Martinez.

"Aaron Lennon we will have to assess because I'm a bit worried about his hamstring. Leighton Baines had to stay on but couldn't move freely in the last five minutes.

"Those three are going to be a serious concern for Saturday."

Everton fans seem to think Laurent Blanc will leave PSG for them as well :mcinnes:

Koeman wouldn't leave us for them, Everton is a drop down and I can see an exodus this summer.

He won't leave us for Everton but it's not a drop down.

Everton have just been taken over and will have as good a chance as anyone to finish top 8 next season, especially if they bin off Martinez which I think they will. They could also do a Villa but then so could we.

I see that the saggy faced buffoon lawrenson has us down for a loss.

Basically slates Evertons home form and then still tips them to win. What an utter c*ck he is

http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Mark_Lawrenson_Predictions_2015-16.html

Top six, eight points more than we have in reality.

He hates us he does.

Please say we'll win Lawro. Please say we'll win. Just say we'll win Lawro. Please Lawro. Please Lawro. Please say we'll win. Please. Please. Please Lawro.

Thank you for that contribution, keyboard warrior.

My point is that he essentially does Everton down, says nothing about Saints and then still picks Everton to win.

But you go ahead and try to have a go at me because that's all that really matters after all.

Shoot or bust week for the Sticky Scousers with us, Scousehampton and then Manure in the space of 8 days, which game is the most important for them? I would say the FAC SF but then they cannot wimp out of the derby so rest a few third legs Saturday?

Lukaku didn't train yesterday and is doubtful alongside Baines, Barkley and Lennon.

Jagielka, Cleverley and McCarthy definitely out.

Usually when presented with a real chance we tend to bottle it but tomorrow is a big opportunity for us.

Wow. Lukaku missing would be huge for us. Bet he plays though!

Need to win the midfield battle and score when we have our good half of 45 minutes (we tend to have a good one and a bad one every week).

Lukaku always seems to monster our defence. Would be good if he was out. He picked on Danny Fox when playing for West Brom. Not really a fair contest. Danny Fox ended up getting sent off out of sheer frustration

Yeah but to be fair, Danny Fox was completely out of his depth in the PL anyway no matter who he was up against.

in fairness, we've not had a defender of van dijk's stature/beastliness to match a player like lukaku for a few years so the tides might turn on sat.

In The Guardian's weekend preview it talks about Hodgson needing to watch John Stones:

If the defender has not yet learned when to sally elegantly forth with the ball and when to hoof it away, then Shane Long (and then Jamie Vardy) is sure to expose him.

Did a brilliant job in the NPC though, which was what he was bought for....

Absolutely, but it wasn't half painful to watch him struggle in the PL. he stayed a season too long imho, he would have been better off moving to another Championship side sooner.

However we are a very different side now so it will be interesting to see if Lukaku does anything if he gets on the pitch

I'm not having a go at you.

Mark Lawrenson has been employing that particular technique (say the opposite in the text to the prediction) for many matches for at least couple of seasons. Probably an attempt to reduce the volume of fans convinced he has an agenda against them but frankly there's not really anything he can do is there?

Do you remember last season against Everton at home when we played a significantly weakened team due to injuries/suspensions and ended up beating them 3-0...

Quite. Nothing worse than the false confidence of "look at the team they're putting out!!".

A win tomorrow will be a great result, regardless of who they send out.
