Saintrowe Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 of Derby County, is that them f@@ked aswell then??
Glasgow_Saint Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 I think he will do a good job - done his time learning the trade now got the chance to prove himself. Good luck to him
Nutwood2 Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 Fantastic for them. If he's half as good as his Dad (and he will be) bloody good luck to him , young man!
St. Jason Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 of Derby County, is that them f@@ked aswell then?? I'd take him ahead of JP every day of the week, 10 years learning the trade, 11 games unbeaten, some good cup runs, decent looking manager!
gordonToo Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 Derby's Chairman quoted in the Times: “There is an element of risk to turn to a manager with no experience at this level,” Pearson said. “We feel we have a squad of players that is underperforming and needs a man-management style of confidence and belief building in them. The club is at the right time for a younger, bright manager to come in and shape the squad and shape the club, who understands this club, wants to take it forward and create his own legacy.” Clough ticks all the boxes.
krissyboy31 Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 I'd take him ahead of JP every day of the week, 10 years learning the trade, 11 games unbeaten, some good cup runs, decent looking manager! Couldn't agree more. His father advised him for the first few years of his reign at Burton (until his untimely death) and he played under some of the best managers this country has ever produced, in the aforementioned Brian, Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan. Oh and I forgot Bobby Robson for England.
Window Cleaner Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 They might go into freefall though. If Jewell couldn't do anything with that rabble, then what chance does a pup like Clough Junior have. They'll walk all over him, well we can only hope so anyway.
CB Fry Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 Couldn't agree more. His father advised him for the first few years of his reign at Burton (until his untimely death) and he played under some of the best managers this country has ever produced, in the aforementioned Brian, Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan. Oh and I forgot Bobby Robson for England. What are you on about? When did Nigel Clough play for Bob Paisley or Joe Fagan? He must have signed for Liverpool in the Souness era, more than ten years after Fagan stood down to make way for Kenny. Clough Jnr has played under such managerial legends as Souness, Roy Evans, Brian Horton, Alan Ball (bless him) and Frank Clark. Clough is a massive gamble in my book, he always said he didn't really want the grief of managing at the highest level (similar to the MLT worldview). It will be a tragedy if Burton choke now and Cloughie doesn't deliver. Any other manager with only experience in the Blue Square to show for ten years managing wouldn't get a sniff of that job. It's a surname-led, romantic appointment. They could easily join us in the dogfight now.
Lowestoft-Saint Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 I think Nigel deserves the chance he has now been given, and I cant help thinking that his Old Man will be having a smile from above and feeling fairly proud of his boy. I think he is destined to go on to manage Notts Forest & maybe return them to the big time. Maybe even go on and get the ultimate job that Brian Clough should have got but never did.
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 I think he is destined to go on to manage Notts Forest & maybe return them to the big time. Would he have been considered this time around, if not why do Derby feel he's the man for the job but Forest didn't ? to me, any appointment is high risk as there are high stakes for all football clubs and noone has the luxury of time, even Scolari is amongst those who may get the bullet if it is considered he has 'failed'

I'm with you on this one C B Fry in that I think it could be good news for us as I'm also not convinced about this appointment. Our equivalent would be going for Nick Holmes, and as much as I admire what he has achieved at Salisbury, I wouldn't want him as first choice to replace Jan.

Ditto But as I posted on their take-over thread about their board appearing to be in a hostile take-over, I'd add on here that this appointment actually smells more to me of populist PR in an upcoming board room battle than a sound footballing decision. Board in "making political appointments" shocker when turmoil could be approaching. Like it - good news for us!
um pahars Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 Board in "making political appointments" shocker when turmoil could be approaching. Like it - good news for us! Or of course our relegation rivals could all be laughing at us and Derby for some ridiculous managerial appointments. Step back for a second and have a think about what Doncaster, Forest, Barnsley and Blackpool fans were thinking when we unveiled Poortvliet:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

After a few games and little points the Derby fans will want his head. Much the same as if we got Shearer or MLT.
saint1977 Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 I think it's a big risk by Derby and I hope Burton don't blow up and miss out on League status.
Mr X Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 Misleading title, perhaps? yeah, I was geting all excited
badgerx16 Posted 6 January, 2009 Posted 6 January, 2009 Any other manager with only experience in the Blue Square to show for ten years managing wouldn't get a sniff of that job. . That's about the same level as JP then !
