And as July 28 is my wedding anniversary and the due date for my daughter's baby, it's rather essential that ManU win the Cup. ?

I didnt realise that if Palace win the cup we have to play two rounds of matches to get to the group = 4 games. I thought there was only one round to play. Will make a massive difference for us.

Indeed.

Same, i thought it was just one round but then again thats because i thought we came in at the second qualifying round last year and not the third !

Oh well , whatever, we will hopefully be better prepared this time round.......but come on United, win that Cup ffs

Think I'll put a few quid on Palace just in case ;-)

Well, with the cost of travel during school holidays it would be good to avoid qualifying. Last year I waited for the later rounds so err... saved some money! Lille would be handy to drive, Fiorentina would make an interesting city break but beyond that I'd probably need to do some research.

If you intend to have any other children, or wedding anniversaries for that matter, it would be essential that you didn't attend the game anyhow :)

Just seeking reassurance here.

Is it 100% certain that Liverpool winning tonight will not stop us going straight into the group stages of the Europa League (if Man Utd win the FA Cup, of course)?

100%. Only Crystal Palace can stop us from our place in the group stages.

A Liverpool win would (marginally) increase our UEFA co-efficient as well but I'm not sure by how much exactly.

As stated by many posters of great intellect and standing, yes it is 100% certain. If Man U win the Cup. If not, 3rd qualifying round.

I hate to confuse matters but if Palace win the Cup I reckon by this we will have to play two qualifying rounds before reaching the group stages. On the 28 July/4th Aug and the Play-off Round 18 Aug/25 Aug?

If Liverpool win they go straight into next season's Champions' League without costing anybody else a place. There is a slot reserved for the winners of this season's Europa League no matter which country.

If Liverpool lose then they get nothing next season. Nada, nichts, niente, rien, sweet FA, sod all. I know which I would prefer. :D

Correct, that would be 3rd qualifying round on 28th July/4th August and then play-off 18th & 25th August. If palace lose then group stage 15th September etc.

Liverpool's result has no impact on us.

Apart from emotionally.

They win = Hate.

They lose = Joy.

This thread thrives on confusing matters. But unfortunately the above isn't a confusing matter, we all agree it is correct.

Se even though we are entering at a later stage ie 3rd Round instead of second, we will still be starting end of July and playing two rounds before the group stages. I thought it was just one round before the group stage. Damn it.

It's the same stage as last year. Third qualifying, which we won, followed by play-off, which we lost.

We entered in the 3rd round last year - so if Palace win the cup, we'll go in at exactly the same stage as we did last year. So the third qualifying round, and then a playoff round (which is where all the teams come in who have just been knocked out of the UCL qualifiers)

So we'll basically have an extra 4 games in august if Palace win, and if Utd win we don't start until mid-September in the group stages (6 guaranteed games up until the 2nd week of December)

It will be totally **** if Palace win the cup and take the shine off of a fantastic season. I ****ing hate utd so no doubt there'll lose just to **** me off.

Dont let it take the shine off, two months ago we would have given our right arms to be in Europe when it looked unlikely.

Perhaps this is what happened. Are there many newly one armed folks in Southampton these days?

Looking at the team we played against Midjtylland, it was very disjointed and un-unified. It consisted of a back 5, only one of which finished the season just gone as a regular (although in the second leg we had Martina playing but he was raw early on) (oh, and contained effing Caulker to boot), a Mane and Wanyama who were heavily under transfer speculation and unhappy at the time, and an unfit Rodriguez. It's actually no wonder we lost in the second leg.

I'd be more confident of qualifying next season, so long as we get our transfer business (both in's and out's) sorted by the end of July, and have our players fully fit, however with the Euro's taking place, I'm guessing this is not the best time to be in a qualifying situation, as some of our players may be given extra time off for holidays and thus won't be fully fit. Still we'll have learned from this season's mistakes. United winning the cup and us going straight into the group stages does make more sense, both in terms of preparation and enticing players to us.

Still, be funny if West Ham didn't qualify. Finishing 7th and 2 points better off than us last season and they miss out on Europa when we got it. Whatever they say, they'd be a bit miffed about it...

Here we go again, just when I thought I understood it. I thought that if Liverpool win tonight, they go into the Champions league yes, but that then England would only get 2 Europa League places, so West Ham would miss out on a place?

No, it doesn't work that way. Although it could be clearer, Champions League Rule 3.07 covers this situation. As the Europa League winner Liverpool would enter the Champions league in the group phase and there is no rebalancing of the access list to be done which means that all other entries into the Europa and Champions League remain the same.

Strangely, the rules are clearer if both of the two title holders come from the same country and neither qualified for Europe through domestic competition. Under those circumstances the rules explicitly state that their country does not lose any European slots.

I'm watching the Dippers V Sevilla.

surely UEFA should have limited the ticket Allocation for both sides.

F'me it's 75% Liverpool fans in there.

WTF?..

How is that fair??...

Thought the allocation was 10,000 each.

Not to say of course that the scousers have managed to obtain tickets through other channels, and locally on the night.

I have no idea.

But it's VERY red in there.

Unless there has been a massive stabbing.

there is defo more than 10,000 in there that's for sure.

Seville returned some of their allocation and they were passed on to Liverpool, due to the demand they had. Thus Seville and Liverpool fans in the same areas and kicking off pre-KO!

Oh right.

Well..I would say Liverpool probably have that sort of attendance here.

There were at least 15,000 more Saints fans in Wembley for the JPT than there are Liverpool fans in Basel's ground tonight.
