This Season: Harrison Reed

Would suggest he must be quite disappointed with how the season has gone.

- 10minutes of league football (as a sub vs Norwich) compared to 458 minutes last season

- No domestic cup starts

- No loan move to the Championship or L1 for regular first team experience. Teams must have been keen so presumably we didn't want to send him out.

- Dropped out of the England age group sides presumably for the three reasons above.

Nobody would have believed this towards the end of last season. I was at the End of Season Awards and Krueger and Les Reed probably mentioned HR more than any other first team squad player for impact he had against Everton and in other games.

Future Prospects

He signed a four year contract in 2014 so he is now halfway through that. Will he be more prominent next year in the first team?

We have lots of numbers in central midfield although all have their flaws. Reed does too, he is overly aggressive at times and gives away too many free kicks, and is obviously very small in stature (couldn't play him and Clasie together) but most people are suprised he hasn't been more involved.

I wonder what he will think when we (most likely) try to get him to extend his contract?

Won't be a no brainer to sign like it was last time...

Good player, bit of a shame about his limited playing time this year, but a victim of us signing an additional DM this season, and JWP playing in a deeper role. He has Wanyama, Romeu, Clasie and JWP all in front of him. Even Davis has played in that deeper role this season.

Supposedly we wanted a big fee for clubs to let him out on loan.

There's a lot of competition

Still, 10mins of league action is almost nothing in the whole season and substantially less than last year when we were probably a better team.

Is no game time plus no loan move good for his development?

He is too good for U21 football.

Not going by the majority of games I have seen him play this year!

FWIW he is never going to be picked above Clasie, Romeu, Davis, JWP or Vic.

In that case, will he ever actually make it as a first teamer for us?

He isn't going to want to sit around without playing for much longer.

In hindsight a season long loan move would have been the best option for him this season surely?

Not sure why he has not seen more action (not ready to be a starter for sure but must have been worth more than 10 mins?) and quite liked him last season. Plenty of rumours have done the rounds about attitude/willingness to go out on loan etc.

Personally hope he goes out on loan next season either championship or even league one and gets to be a regular in a first team to see if he can develop his game. The lad is obviously decent and has potential but does not mean he will realise his full potential or develop into a top class player.

No not good for his development however I'll trust the club on youth "products" and the way they handle them.

A loan would seem to be the best option but for one reason or another that hasn't materialised.

If he was playing well and doing what Ronald wanted him to do he'd be playing. We don't have the resources to just drop a player who is good enough for the first team for no particular reason. It is surely that simple. He must not have improved and those who watch him regularly seem to think he hasn't looked that good this season.

Thought he would see regular action this season bit puzzled by the situation if he isn't in the squad at the start of next season he should look for a short term loan at championship level. Has always looked decent to me!

I also think he's pretty good, but last season we were probably a body short in midfield with Spiderman and Wanyama being the obvious two first choices, but backup being quite limited. We therefore saw Reed and Toby get a few games in there when various injuries / suspensions were in place. Obviously Toby and Schneiderlin have now both left the club and Clasie and Romeu, too fairly established central midfield players, have come in. This has pushed Reed one further down, but I am a bit confused as to why he hasnt played much in the cup or at least got some more minutes off the bench when we've had a few of the midfield down.

We've also had more strength in depth than previous seasons, and are now at the point where we can potentially have 5 or 6 strikers in the matchday squad (Pelle, Long, J-Rod, Austin, Juanmi, Mane, Gallagher to a stretch), whilst in the past we've also only had a couple of established players, and therefore had players like Gallagher (and Reed) maybe drafted in a little early. There's therefore less slots available for the younger players to even make it on the bench, but fingers crossed we'll see him get in the matchday squad a few times more til the end of the season, and hopefully make it out onto the pitch. Would love to see the likes of Reed, Targett, Ward-Prowse and Gallagher tearing up the premier league, but maybe they're not good enough (yet...)

I'm fairly sure by the end of last season Koeman had established that he'd rather have Reed in midfield than Alderweireld given the impact it had on our defensive record. But it also probably made his mind up that we needed two players in when Schneiderlin went rather than just one, and the reality is that Reed is one player further away from the side than last season and isn't getting a chance to prove he's good enough - and his route being blocked seems to be affecting his application for the U21s too.

The question is why we've stopped him being loaned out, and given Wanyama's lengthy bans, how he still hasn't featured more in that scenario.

We'll have to make an early decision on him next season as well, as short-term emergency loans to the FL are now finished, so only half or full-season loans will be permitted (unless FIFA cave in again) and he'd have to go out for at least half a season at a time with no recall option

He is a good player but worthy of a top six side in the Prem? Doubtful.

He's not going to get any better without first team matches either, so it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Compare that to the times Ward-Prowse got shoe-horned in at the start of the season when we lost matches due to not having a DM pairing and leaving the defence exposed. Then again, Clasie's been dropped in there for a few of those too.

I really rate Reed in that DM role. I remember him playing a great game v Everton when Morgan and/or Vic were missing; after the game Ron commented that Harry lacked "technical" skills, and it seems that judgement has worked against much involvement since. It's one of the only gripes I have with RK, since players like Targett and Ward-Prowse have been given so many opportunities to develop, particularly JWP.

as others have noted, he has a lot of competition ahead of him....and who would you drop in order to play him in the Prem side?

He looks quite good ...at the U21 level....which is like " Disneyland football " compared to life in real football, and this season the U21's have been poor.

One of the best player in the U21's to be sure, but with injury crisis, around a dozen U18 lads have had game time, and U21 still depends on 3 or 4 of them.

He needs loan out next season, and should try his skills in the Championship.

David, my point is the lad has looked right at home at Prem level when he's been played. I'm not suggesting he should play ahead of Vic or Romeu, maybe even Clasie, but there have been times this season when JWP has been preferred at DM and even if you rate JWP he is not a DM.
