I'm perplexed as to why so many want to just drop a player of the month nominee. Pelle has been in very good form and deserves his place!

Because long is better than him in the same position and we are better as a team in that respect?

It`s called an agenda mate, he could score very game and some would STILL slate him.....odd bods

"Better than a player of the month nominee". So Long's been nominated as well then?

The anti Pelle comments on here are borderline mental.

Very much so. But what are ya gonna do.

As for the game itself, all jokes aside we should be pummeling them. Not sure I buy into the "desperate" idea. They've been **** all season and there's no reason to think they'll be any better now with their fate all but sealed.

Don't care if it's 2,3,or 4-nil. Or even 2-1, but no reason to accept anything less than 3 points.

There are plenty of reasons why they might improve. They've recently brought an excellent, experienced manager on board. They do have some genuinely good players. They've obviously put in a lot more poor performances than good ones this year, but they've got the ability to certainly give us a game. I reckon they'll nick something.

Will 7th be enough for a euro spot this season if a team already in europe (because of league position) wins the FA Cup? Sixth is a euro spot on account of City winning the League Cup, right?

Not sure about 7th but 6th only is if Man City finish in the top 4, which is certainly not guaranteed at this point.

Top 5 I guess? Fifth is the defacto Europa league spot me thinks.

I think Man City 5th would give 6th a place too. And if Man City are in top 5 and a top 6 team win the FA Cup it may be 7th gets a place, but I'm not certain. If Liverpool win the Europa Cup, it gets even more complicated but, as I understand it, will never go down to 8th

Just found out I've managed to get tickets to take my 6 year old tomorrow. It's his first time at St Mary's. Think he'll explode tonight when I get home and tell him

With a user name like your's its like father like son then  - Jokes....Bet you both have a great time. (A Blast even!)

I've seen Newcastle live a few times this season and it's hard to overstate how bad their defence is. They've got a third choice keeper, a non left back at left back and the centre backs are really poor. Janmaat, whilst talented, looks like he doesn't want to be there

They'll win 1-0 then

Have a great time - hope the result is a good one!

One thing nobody has mentioned is that Shelvey is on 9 bookings and this weekend is the last match for the 10 bookings/2 match ban.

If he gets booked he will miss 2 home games one against his former club Swansea, which I believe he really wants to play in.

I hope Saints have done their homework and players like Sadio/Shane etc run at him and commit him to tackle knowing that one bad tackle and he will get a ban.

The Newcastle forums make for depressing reading. The general consensus is that they will get hammered 8-0

Well a least they have a reason to get depressed sometimes I come on here and think saints must be cut a drift in the relegation zone....

Yes..... Not that it matters much to anyone on here but I've been thinking about changing my username - it's a hangover from my younger gaming days. Now I'm over 40 with responsibilities it's not quite the thing

all this talk of "must win " is obvious, but we need to win this sort of fixture as those improved performances against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man.Utd seems to fade into insignificance - when we still drop home points against the likes of Stoke and Aston Villa, and turn in shocking performances like Bournemouth and Norwich away.

Consistancy is lacking at key times and if we had another 10 points we'd be looking a lot healthier in the Prem. right now.

.Mmm.....you mean something along the lines of a cig. lighter, or a box of matches?..:D

I like Lawro's league table. He has Southampton up one place at 6, whilst Leicester are down in 14th!!

And he's predicted them to drop two points at Sunderland!

No need for a back five vs Newcastle (imo).

-------------Forster------------

Cedric--Fonte--VVD--Bertrand

-----Vic----Clasie----Romeu----

--------------Mane-------------

-------Austin--------Long-------

Bench - Stek, Martina, Yoshida, JWP, Tadic, JRod, Pelle.

Clasie to drop deep to collect possession from CBs/Forster/etc.

Flexible enough to adapt to 4-2-3-1 if FBs are too exposed.

Edit: Forgot that Davis did his ankle in (or whatever it was).

Clasie to drop deep to collect possession from CBs/Forster/etc. If Mane can't compete aerially (let's face it, they'll be crosses aplenty), Austin on at HT with Mane dropping back into AM, either hooking Davis, or dropping him into the midfield 3 in place of any (probably Clasie).

Flexible enough to adapt to 4-2-3-1 if FBs are too exposed (Davis shifting up and to the left, with Mane dropping back).

Davis is injured

So instead you've gone for 4 defenders and 3 defensive midfielders?

Nothing gets past you (save for humour/Twitter jokes). Clasie and Romeu are as defensive/deep as they're told to be. Both are comfortable further up the field, particularly Romeu.

I don't agree. They are all deep lying midfielders and lack the mobility needed to play further forward.

If a midfielder comes in for Davis it will be JWP.

Ward-Prowse is the closest like for like replacement for Davis we have to play in the a 4-2-3-1, not Romeu.

That's fair enough, of course...but to suggest JWP's mobility is a significant improvement on that of Clasie or Romeu doesn't wash with me (he's frequently cited on here for being painfully slow), if that's what you're implying. At any rate, at no point did I suggest any of them are to replace Davis in AM...hence Sadio Mane.

Oh, and I personally do consider Romeu to be a box-to-box (in terms of his skillset).

P.S Yes, it will be JWP for Davis in all likelihood, but I was stating my preference, not Koeman's :)

Agreed....but I wasn't advocating 4-2-3-1 (because I think it's fairly evident that Long benefits from playing in a front two), nor claiming the contrary.

JWP will link play but not as creative as Tadić in the hole. But if Toon pack the defence set pieces will be important.

I'd start with JWP, Long, Mané, Pellè and bring Tadić and Austin on if it's not working.

I know there are many ways to see/listen to the game this afternoon, but if it helps anyone, it's the main 3pm commentary on 5 live.

4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1?

I'm guessing 4231, with Tadic on the left, Mane in the middle, Long on the right, Pelle up top and Wanyama + Clasie in holding positions.

We beat these lot 4-0 at home last season with Tadic and Pelle playing really well that game- maybe a repeat, who knows.

I'd have like to seen Austin play, but come on Pelle!

Pelle plays again, despite being abysmal

he should shine against this defence. Thing is, we are better with Long in his position

Well its good to get Long back, but I'm bummed about Pelle. Would much rather Long and Austin up front. Oh well, lets just roll over them.
