Badger Posted 3 April, 2016 Share Posted 3 April, 2016 Worries me that this is a fixture where they have everything to play for, and we are probably winding down to the end of the season, possibly even one or two players thinking of their move in the summer. Is the 'attraction' of qualifying for the Europa League such an incentive ? If we turn up and are motivated we should win but it reminds me of the Cardiff home fixture a couple of years ago. Sour Mash Posted 3 April, 2016 Share Posted 3 April, 2016 Today we didn't make schmeichel make a save. Not sure where this myth has come from. Apart from Mane beating Schmeichel and having a shot saved by a defenders hand, Austin's shot blocked by a defender's hand and the fantastic save from Fonte's shot. Apart from Mane beating Schmeichel and having a shot saved by a defenders hand, Austin's shot blocked by a defender's hand and the fantastic save from Fonte's shot. Wasn't Austin's more of a cross, he was certainly very wide? The Fonte save was regulation IMO - looks nice but he would save 9/10 of them. Apart from that he was untroubled. Badger Posted 3 April, 2016 Share Posted 3 April, 2016 I have to say, as ungracious as it sounds, I would like to put a 'nail' in the coffin of the 'big club' that is Newcastle. The arrogance shown by some of their fans over the years needs to be checked. Have to disagree on that one, I've a soft spot for Newcastle for a number of reasons. Always found them to be quite 'gracious' in the days when MLT used to single handedly put a spoke in their title challenges for example. The True Geordie also used to be a good watch. Would prefer Slobberdyce to go down with Sunderland.
Sour Mash Posted 3 April, 2016 Share Posted 3 April, 2016 I don't remember fontes shot, but the other two weren't saves. We had a lot of chances to shoot and a lot of chances to get better balls into the box. We played well up to the box, got ourselves in great positions again and again and wasted it. If you're satisfied with that fair enough you're allowed whatever opinion you like. If you don't remember it, fair enough, but it was a cracking strike, so I just guess you weren't paying much attention to the game. Defenders using their hands to block shots as well, god knows why you don't think that is a save.
Sour Mash Posted 3 April, 2016 Share Posted 3 April, 2016 Might well do. For me I'd rather move on. He'll probably go in the summer and I'd rather use Austin, Rodriguez and Long. And what if he isn't going to go in the summer? And what about those fans that actually go and watch their side play wanting to see the best side we have available? saintwbu Posted 3 April, 2016 Share Posted 3 April, 2016 Funny how it takes one supposedly bad game from Pelle to bring out all the critics, but scoring one, setting up two and winning a penalty against Liverpool got minor praise, as did scoring two against Stoke, and also every chance we had vs. Sunderland a few weeks back seemed to be created in some part by him as well. I couldn't watch the game today, i flicked through it later on and it still seemed that most of our positive moments came via Pelle in some form, most notable the Mane chance/Simpson handball all coming from a fantastic turn and pass from none other than the whipping boy himself. Certain players are just chosen to be blasted more than others I guess. I don't think he deserves to be dropped against a terrible Newcastle in favour of a Rodriguez who has missed almost two full seasons, and an Austin who has been out for 3-4 weeks. mrfahaji Posted 3 April, 2016 Share Posted 3 April, 2016 Didn't see the game today, so can't comment on how bad (or not) Davis was. However, unless Benitez has radically changed their style of play, Newcastle might be a game which would suit him. They often leave huge gaps between defence & attack, so someone who carries the ball to start counter attacks may prove very effective. I know Davis has his weaknesses, but he is probably the player I see most involved when we counter well against teams. Not sure Mane will be picking up the ball deep enough, can't see it from Clasie and JWP doesn't have the pace to cover the ground quickly. Romeu is the only other option - haven't seen any evidence either way on him though.
S-Clarke Posted 3 April, 2016 Share Posted 3 April, 2016 I think Davis (or the position we're playing him in) will be something we evolve in the transfer market, but he is still capable and is very clever in tight area's in his ability to release the ball. He does lack penetration in the final third, I don't think he's really a natural number 10 as such - more of a CM, so it's a little harsh to throw that at him. We need someone like a Gylfi Sigardsson behind the 3 of Mane/Long/Austin or Pelle - that would be quite lethal in my opinion.
Red Posted 3 April, 2016 Share Posted 3 April, 2016 Not sure why we are blaming Davis? I thought he had an ok game - not great but not bad. Our problem was we showed Leicester too much respect at the start (we only got going on around 30 mins), and Cedric should have closed down the cross. Add to that we should have had two penalties (and one Leicester sending off), so very unlucky really. That's the way it goes sometimes. I personally would have subbed VM after his yellow as he was either going to get sent off, or as it appeared less effective. Not convinced about Austin either - hope I am wrong.
