Yorkshire Saint Posted 1 April, 2016 Share Posted 1 April, 2016 O please, surely we can do better than that on April fools day http://mobile.saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/20160401-southampton-new-club-crest-2016-17-3035747.aspx
ashnats Posted 1 April, 2016 Share Posted 1 April, 2016 I actually like it. It's modern, unique, and it is representative of the digital age, whilst maintaining some of the tradition. Maybe if we start a fan backlash (against it not being the new badge), they will actually make it.

Miltonaggro Posted 1 April, 2016 Share Posted 1 April, 2016 They should have done one with Wanyama and Mane saying they had both signed contract extensions with a pay cut to fund a statue of Adam Lallana, the patron Saint of Sexit...
John Boy Saint Posted 1 April, 2016 Share Posted 1 April, 2016 Paul Inuleg - geddit? Ho Ho. Still think Flair Polo kit manufacturers name anagram was the best, the meltdown that caused was fantastic, especially being qualified by the Echo who themselves were deluged by complaints from incandescent Saints fans. Tells you something about how tired and dated the current badge looks when this 'new' one actually looks better! Genius to replace that hideous ball with a Saints emoji. We need a petition ... On a more pedantic note, the OS report describes the flower on the badge as a white rose when it is actually a Mayflower surely?

Genius to replace that hideous ball with a Saints emoji. We need a petition ... On a more pedantic note, the OS report describes the flower on the badge as a white rose when it is actually a Mayflower surely? From what I have just 'researched' (googled), it is actually a white rose, and a former crest (as well as City crest) also features two red roses. "The red and white roses are linked with the Royal houses of Lancaster and York. Henry, Duke of Lancaster, his son in law John of Gaunt and John's younger brother, Edmond, Duke of York, were all involved in expeditions which set out from Southampton. It is thus likely that the Princes granted the roses to the city." I have always been a fan of the badge to be honest, always felt it was quite fresh looking, if a little on the childish side. I think I've always preferred badges with a bit more intracacy and colour though, even growing up in the 90s, I always much preferred the emblem of say, Coventry, to Sheffield Wednesday. VectisSaint Posted 1 April, 2016 Share Posted 1 April, 2016 On a more pedantic note, the OS report describes the flower on the badge as a white rose when it is actually a Mayflower surely? As Mrfahaji says it is a rose, a modern stylised white form of the Hampshire Rose, which can be found in red, gold or white, and used to form part of the badge and is a part of the Southampton (City) coat of arms. The reason why Hampshire uses a Rose (or roses) is a mystery, though the most often used theory is the related to the Houses of Lancaster and York. The other theory is that it is based on the golden rose of Provence used by Henry III (the Southampton Coat of Arms has two white roses and one golden rose on a red and white shield). Nordic Saint Posted 1 April, 2016 Share Posted 1 April, 2016 Yes, the roses on the club's traditional badge are indeed the red and white roses of Lancaster and York, which symbolise the fact that after the Wars of the Roses their armies were united and set sail from Southampton to invade France. When the new badge was introduced in the 70s the red roses were replaced by a football and a tree. Men went to war from this city, you know. We don't even need to make up any Alan Ball quotes about it.
Saint 76er Posted 2 April, 2016 Share Posted 2 April, 2016 Thanks for the info on the roses, guys. That's interesting stuff and if Southampton was used to launch an invasion of France, that's good enough for me! Maybe then it would be a good idea to change to an updated version of the traditional badge, with the roses and the city's red and white as a background. Simplistic elegance would work for me, rather than the comic book mishmash of a badge we currently have. As we are setting our sights on being a top six PL team with global aspirations, then an update to what is essentially our public/corporate image is long overdue, IMO.
