GOSSIP: March 31 - Saints captain Jose Fonte is pondering a move home to Portugal as Saints prepare a move for Celtic

SAINTS captain Jose Fonte is considering a move to his homeland Portugal, according to the Daily Star.

 

The newspaper reports that the 32-year-old defender wouldn't turn down a move to any of the country's big clubs Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Porto, should they come calling for his services.

 

The Star quotes Fonte, who has two years left on his contract at Saints, as saying: “No player can close the door to the three big clubs in Portugal.

 

“They are three great teams, of great quality, which always fight for titles.

 

 

“But at the moment I’m happy where I am, in England. It’s the best league in the world, in my opinion, but I don’t close doors.”

 

The St Mary's skipper, who has nine caps for Portugal, was a youth player at Sporting and later signed for Benfica, but didn't make a first team appearance.

 

Meanwhile, Saints are allegedly plotting a big-money summer move for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney.

Of course, Saints have a history of buying players from the Scottish giants, with current stars Fraser Forster, Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk all coming from Parkhead.
