9-3 Posted 30 March, 2016 Share Posted 30 March, 2016 Met Ray Graydon tonight by chance in my local. He still lives in the area. What a lovely man. We spoke for a good hour and he has fond memories of his time at Saints under Chris Nicholl back in the late 1980s early 1990s. Is still very good friends with Chris Nicholl, they still meet up. He had a brilliant career at Villa playing on the right wing. Played under Ron Saunders. Spoke well of Doug Ellis Chairman at Aston Villa at the time, Brian Little and Bruce Rioch. Said about his winning penalty goal in the 1975 League Cup Final against Norwich at Wembley and so proud his Mum and Dad were there to see it. His biggest achievement were the back to back promotions with Walsall, where fans still stop and to talk to him when he goes back there. Speaks fondly of the time with Washington Diplomats working with Bobby Stokes and big Jim Steele. Was at the start of Matt Le Tiss and Alan Shearers' career and said Matt was a genius. Ray Graydon, what a true gentleman.
CB Fry Posted 30 March, 2016 Share Posted 30 March, 2016 Didn't Nicholl end up being assistant to Ray at Walsall a few years later? That Nicholl team of 89-90 is unquestionably why I became a Saints fan - up to that point I wasn't really interested in football but my brothers and Dad were. That was the team that changed everything.

Give it to Ron Posted 31 March, 2016 Share Posted 31 March, 2016 Ray used to play golf at Wellow same time I was a member. Think he was at Bristol Rovers then as I won raffle for signed shirt he donated. Nice man and decent player Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

JonnyOldBoy Posted 30 April, 2016 Share Posted 30 April, 2016 The 89/90 team was pure class in all attacking departments.... defensively a bit out-of-the-park at times but the classics that season were too numerous to mention. CN should never have been sacked... stupid decision... and the start of our real troubles...

steadyeddie Posted 30 April, 2016 Share Posted 30 April, 2016 Not so much the sacking of CN, but the selection of his successor was the problem... Don't please.....it was the beginning of a very dark period.
