eelpie Posted 30 March, 2016 Share Posted 30 March, 2016 Winchester's Warren Bentley has scored more goals (41) this season than Vardy and Kane combined. Could this ex Saints Academy player make it in the Football League - perhaps with one of the clubs that borrow our talent?, or even us? After all, it has been done before
St_Tel49 Posted 30 March, 2016 Share Posted 30 March, 2016 Sounds silly but they would probably have said that about Vardy four years ago. He certainly has astrikers instincts.
Matthew Le God Posted 30 March, 2016 Share Posted 30 March, 2016 Vardy was in the 5th tier with Fleetwood 4 years ago at 25, Bentley is in the 8th tier at 25 years old. Being a late developer and playing non league in your teens and early 20's is one thing, but to reach 25 and still be in the 8th tier suggests the Premier League boat has gone. Stuart Pearce? They aren't comparable, the 4 years is a big difference. As I said, its very different playing non league as a late developer in late teens early 20's to playing in the 8th tier aged 25. Warren Bentley - playing in the 8th tier at 25 years old Ian Wright - signed for Crystal Palace at 21 years old Stuart Pearce - signed for Coventry at 21 years old

Warren Bentley - playing in the 8th tier at 25 years old Ian Wright - signed for Crystal Palace at 21 years old Stuart Pearce - signed for Coventry at 21 years old Vardy was playing for Halifax in the NPL (7th tier) at about the same age, he is 29 now. I really don't think Bentley will be good enough to step up to the PL, but who is to say he could not make it in the Football League and make a decent living as a professional. By the way, i was reading this article earlier today, does anyone actually know when he was with Saints academy, and is there any record of him being there. He refers to playing with Bale. Bale was primarily at the Bath Satellite academy until he was about 16 (while he was still in school in Cardiff), of course he would have played at Southampton before then. Just wondering when Bentley was actually on our books as I have no recollection of him as a scholar (not that it means much that I don't remember him). david in sweden Posted 31 March, 2016 Share Posted 31 March, 2016 If you mean Lambert, he never played non-league. Correct of course, it's just that I can't seem to think of Macclesfield as a Football League club. (now back in the National League)
sotonist Posted 31 March, 2016 Share Posted 31 March, 2016 "As a player myself, I have never been blessed with great speed or strength, so it's all down to technical ability and movement. not a lot like vardy then. if he's no physical specimen at that level, he'll be like lee trundle above league one.
