spyinthesky Posted 21 March, 2016 Share Posted 21 March, 2016 Based on current form and RK's playing system would possibly look something like: Forster...............(Skelelenburg) Martina.............. (Cedric) Fonte..................(Gardos) VVD Bertrand Romeu................(Claisse) Wanyama Davis.................(Ward Prowse) Mane Pelle..................(Austin) Long..................(Rodriguez) So, on above basis, no place for other players regularly included in the match day squad ie Tadic, Yosida, Targett, Juanmi, plus two keepers This would all be subject to form, fitness and system but whatever formation used it shows that when all players are available we have a reasonably strong bench, which has not always been the case in recent years. The9 Posted 21 March, 2016 Share Posted 21 March, 2016 It shows that we need to sign a centre back, anyway. Cedric starting and Martina covering RB and CB ahead of Gardos frees up room for Targett (instead of Gardos) to cover LB/LM which also gives the option of using Bertrand at LCB in a 3. I doubt we'd pick 4 strikers on the bench so that gets Tadic in ahead of Rodriguez.
S-Clarke Posted 21 March, 2016 Share Posted 21 March, 2016 I'd personally sign a utility defender. Someone who can cover CB and RB as required, someone in the Ivanovic style. I personally rate Cedric and feel with a pre-season under his belt he'll be a much more reliable player. (he's not exactly let us down when played). Then I'd sign a new number 10 type. And that would be it. However, if we lose players we will need to replace them. But as it stands now, we're pretty competitive all over the park. I agree. any player we sell, i would like us to buy players who are able to start straight away and be (hopefully) good. not require half a season (or more) to get 'up to speed' a quality number 10 is essential. get our own Payet - that would be amazing

He's been amazing for us and I'm still a big fan, but I think we can get better and evolve his role. Having him as then part of the squad to utilise puts us in a very strong position. david in sweden Posted 21 March, 2016 Share Posted 21 March, 2016 I'd personally sign a utility defender. Although, I agree with the sentiment . the use of the word "utility" suggest (to many) a player not capable enough of holding down a place in the side, but who could cover - in case of injury/suspension. Perhaps another usage like " versatile" would satisfy more people I'm sure?.... I recall the "stick " that Rory Delap got during his stay with Saints, when he was continually played by successive managers, and always willing to play any number of roles he was asked in a team - without ever nailing down a regular spot. Alternatively, Jimmy Gabriel's contribution in the late 1960's (in one season he played in 6 different positions,as well as emergency keeper on one occasion) was legend. He never let the side down - regardless of whatever position he played. Players who can cover another spot are invaluable, but if like Yoshida, (whose better games were on left side) get canned when playing as emergency RB and end up making dire mistakes at vital times. Saint Charlie Posted 21 March, 2016 Share Posted 21 March, 2016 Wanyama aside, I also think we could sign another good quality central midfielder. We still havent found a great balance in there this season, despite trying so many different combos. Need a bit more agility there I think. Agree, once again. He always turns in a shift, but rarely get recognition for it. He may continue to play well for a while longer, but after the age of 30 the beginning of the end can come swiftly ...especially at this level. I think that Koeman is looking to Clasie and JWP to be " the new midfield ", but we really need an experienced "midfield general " to make it all tick. jarhead5 Posted 21 March, 2016 Share Posted 21 March, 2016 Romeu is strong and seems to always come away with the ball. However, he has poor touch and often gives the ball right back to the other side. He is also a bit rash. He tends to be overly aggressive. All in all, he is a good player at holding mid. Plays very hard and wants to be in the team. Hopefully, Romeu and Vic get a run of games together.

Wanyama on the ball was a work in progress but off it he was suited to the PL from the start. I remember lots of positive comments about him after the WBA away game. Saint Matty 76 Posted 21 March, 2016 Share Posted 21 March, 2016 "If all fit" is a hard way to go about it, if we're talking about Rodriguez when he was last fully-fit and Austin last season, then for me it'd look like... Forster Cedric - Fonte - van Dijk - Bertrand Wanyama - Clasie Long - Mane - Rodriguez Austin Stekelenburg, Gardos, Martina, Romeu, Davis, Tadic, Pelle
