SAINTS vs Liverpool

Listening on Radio Solent, its been clear from the first minute that there's a lesson from this - that this squad isn't as good as we thought it was. Maybe we should be grateful if we manage a top 10 finish and that may be the best we can expect for the next season or so. Really big signings needed to get into the top 4, as made by the wealthy clubs, are beyond us but it does make you respect even more what has happened at Leicester.

We are a mid table side, simple as that. Talk of top 4 and Europe is pie in the sky. What Leicester have done this season is great, but it's a one off in 30 years.

Football results hang on the finest of threads. If you have a stone-cold penalty not given, it changes the entire trajectory of the game. So frustrating. Having said that Liverpool have shown incredible pace and skill. overall they certainly deserve a lead. 1-2 wd be a fair reflection of the half...

We need Mane on for Tadic.

They should've been down to 10 men. Should've been a PK and a red card. However, everyone is playing so poor and we would likely be down at half anyway. Poor touch, poor passes, poor movement. But I guess it's hard to keep your head in the game when the ref won't allow fair play.

Just watched a replay of the penalty decision. I'm not as convinced now as I was at the time that its a stonewall penalty. Long seems to turn right into Lovren at the last moment and the two players then collide. As much asI hate to say it, I don't see how Lovren was supposed to avoid the collision.

It wasn't a stone cold penalty. Long ran across Lovren and was looking for it. Was 50/50 for me.

We have been woeful in central midfield and not able to deal with their movement and tempo.

This.

If Fonte did that and Lallana jumped on the floor we would be in uproar. "Stone wall pen" ... let's focus on getting 1 shot on f***ing target in 45 minutes before we start blaming the ref Saints .

Mane on for Tadic. Press high and please some ENERGY!!!

They've shredded us through midfield and been allowed time in dangerous positions to pick their spot in the back of the net - how many times have we seen Coutinho and Sturridge score goals like todays. 2-1 would flatter us greatly. Pelle has been abject; Tadic not much better; Clasie all at sea. Martina has shown up offensively but has left acres of space to exploit. We've been thoroughly tonked so far - he has to bring Mane and Wanyama on at H/T but I bet he doesn't.

I think the automatic red-card for last-defender fouls worked against us there. It's a stupid rule, to me. I think refs should have the ability to award a penalty for a clumsy foul and save the red card for deliberate take-downs. It's a tough call (and too big a punishment) to send off someone early in the game AND give the penalty. Dumb rule. And it hurt us today.

Running across Lovren whilst trying to get towards the goal FFS. Should he have turned left towards the corner flag instead????

Arm across the back, easy penalty.

But if we insist on letting Coutino space and time to cut in and shoot yet again then we are doomed anyway.

WTF is it with Sturidge .. pretty sure Saints Fans have seen him play and score more than 99% of Liverpool fans!!

Tadic has been pedesstrian - get Mane on.

Anyone who thinks the ref got the penalty decision needs their eyes testing IMO. Stone wall. If that was at the other end he'd have been gagging to give it.

Haven't seen it myself, but listening on 5 Live they seem fairly confident that it wasn't a penalty.

This. Once the emotion is taken out. The ref isn't the reason we are losing.

Totally agree with that view. Definitely influences the ref, not wanting to Red Card somebody who may well be trying to get the ball, but commits a foul.

For all you wanting Mane in, do you realize he hasen't scored in four months? He is not the player he was last year. There is no saviour and no scapegoat. The whole team was poor.

The biggest problem is that Romeu and Clasie both get forward at the same time it leaves a huuuuge gap in the midfield to counter-attack. To make things worse the defence is sitting too deep, allowing all the time and space to shoot from the outside. Sturridge goal was infuriating. It was so obvious he was going far post, yet they bite on the fake shot and he scores easily.

It was a penalty early on. The ref is giving us nothing. He is a joke.

They are closing down, not letting any crosses in. Great coaching by Klopp. And Liverpool has outclassed us in every department. We got outplayed. Credit to them.

And Bertrand shouldn't been taking the set pieces. I rather see Tadic, Davis and even Virgil before him.

It wasnt a stonewall pen. Long was looking for it and cut across Lovren. Where is the defender meant to go?

Presume you missed the shove in the back? Doesn't matter than he cut across him, he was shoved down and that's a free kick anywhere else on the pitch and a penalty for every team in the top 4.

Having been at the Dell when we were 0-3 down to Liverpool at one point and came back to 3-3 I am choosing to believe we can still get something from this game.

My last ever visit to the old place ... was a very emotional day for me indeed. Certainly didn't want my last visit to be a tonking by those scouse cooonts

The angle the ref has means he can't see the little push by Lovren, and without that element it looks like Long goes down easily. Any other angle and he probably gives it, but he only has one.

Go ahead and it's a different game, but you can't blame the ref for the two goals conceded, nor the two great three v two opportunities because we send too many players forward. Far, far too open in the middle. Not sure why we think we can go toe to toe with Liverpool. They are a decent outfit and our five at the back, strangle the opposition seemed a far better choice. That system turned our season, but we seem to have forgotten that.

Hopefully we will get an early goal and the game will change...
