What happens to open up 7th place?

Watching teams like Watford and Palace in the FA Cup, it makes me realise what an almighty chance we had over the last 3 seasons. Namely one season in particular.

Cheers Poch.

both this and last season also. more so this season. So much opportunity has been missed this year

Yes.

I recall thinking how lucky Everton were to face Watford in the Cup Final in 1984. Looks like those c^nts might strike luck again with their route to the final.

God what a dreadful season if spurs were to win the league, and Everton the FA Cup. Not even the skates missing promotion would compensate for that.

Still of the opinion that a side with Morgan, Wanyama, Lallana, Lambert, Shaw, Lovren should have got to a final - and would have, if MP had taken it seriously.

true, but the common consensus is this is a stronger squad/team

not that I agree with that.

safe to say, the last couple of years have been an opportunity missed in the cups

Definitely.

MP's mis-management of that was a disgrace, possibly as suggested on here at the time that C^ntese had only given an incentive for a league place, and probably also that MP knew where he was going at the end of the season.

There are 7 European spots. 4 in the Champions League and 3 in the Europa League.

2 Europa League spots are reserved for the winners of the League Cup and FA Cup.

Man City, as League Cup winners, already have a European spot, so if they finish in the top 5 then 6th place will effectively get their spot.

If the FA Cup winners finish in the top 6 then the team that finishes 7th in the league will get that particular European spot.

As it seems likely that Watford, Crystal Palace and (possibly) Everton will finish below us, ideally we want Man Utd or West Ham to win the FA Cup.

Of course, we could finish in 6th spot anyway...

What happens if Man Utd or Liverpool win Europa and finish above us , would we still have 3 Europa Spots and therefore 8th would do it

The Europa winners go into next season's CL , but I think the downside is that 4th place from the league go into the Europa as England are only allowed 4 places in the CL (even if we also win the CL).

Cheers Lambert. Missed an open goal from a yard out.

No, if Man Utd or Liverpool win Europa and not finish in the top 4, they go into the CL along with the top 4 (i.e. 5 CL spots). But one Europa spot is eliminated to compensate (if they would also qualify for Europa by league). So 8th cannot qualify for Europe. The only way 7th can qualify is if the winner of the FA cup finishes in the top 6.

The infamous, Glasgow Saint inspired 8th place finish incentive. You absolute clown.

Cheers, so only 7 clubs can qualify for Europe . Either 4 & 3 or 5 & 2

The incentive was that Poch would have been given a man-size golden teaspoon upon finishing eighth.

Well, I say man-size. It was the same height as Nicola Cortese so better described as "adequately sized".

When does our coefficient go down the toilet and we are left with only three CL places?

Sure I read not so long ago that another 2 seasons like this and will be in serious danger

You would think next season, it will improve

Some seriously good managers will have arrived and/already settled

Personal opinion is that Europa League via the qualifiers is not worth the effort. Disrupts pre-season and carries risks of injury for players who have hardly had time to recover from the last season. Our good performance in the first half of 2014/15 was down to a good run of results in the early season with no European involvement. Our exit from the Euro league competition in 2015/16 after 4 qualifying games was accompanied by a poor start in the Premier League - only one win in our first 6 games. If Watford win the FA Cup and finish mid-table, that would suit me but it might mean a relegation struggle for Watford next season.

I think I'd rather skip Europa this season. We got in by a mathematical fluke last season (League Cup and FA Cup winners being in the top 6 and us in 7th)

That may happen again, but I hope not.

If we storm into 5th place or 6th and are ripping our way up the division, fair enough. But getting into this tournament (which no one much cares about) on some bizarre chain of results that ends with us ahead of, say, Everton on goals scored or goal difference is just a joke. Best avoided.

It is looking like it will not happen this year which means that it is safe through the 2017-2018 season. The Juventus-Bayern Munich game is important. If Juventus is knocked out Italy probably cannot catch England this year.

However, it is looking like England and Italy will start next year pretty close to even so the results next year could take away the fourth slot for 2018-2019. On the other hand, if Juventus wins and goes on to the finals and both Man City and Arsenal are knocked out this week, it could still happen this year.

Because of how well Italy did last season, the fourth spot is going to remain potentially at risk for the next three years.
