Roger Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Do we need Arsenal to win or if West Ham or man Utd win the cup does it open up another league place?
marc_saint Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 We need a team to finish in the top 6 to also win the FA Cup. So... Arsenal or Man Utd
Roger Posted 13 March, 2016 Author Posted 13 March, 2016 We need a team to finish in the top 6 to also win the FA Cup. So... Arsenal or Man Utd Not West Ham?
Patrick Bateman Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Safer bet to back Arsenal, given Man Utd seem to be exploding and West Ham could bomb out or equally push for a top 4 spot.
Ohio Saint Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Arsenal on their way out... It's hard to be up for Arsenal on this one, even if it benefits us.
Patrick Bateman Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Arsenal on their way out... For all their quality players, they just don't look like a team, or look very interesting to watch - weird. Enjoying watching Watford though!
Mr Biscuits Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 (edited) So we either need West Ham to win the FA cup and finish in fourth or Man U to win and finish fourth. Great. Or we go on a bonkers run for the last 8 games and snatch 4th ourselves....... Edited 13 March, 2016 by Mr Biscuits
Mr Biscuits Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 how can wenger stay on after this Because fourth place is like winning a cup apparently.....
S-Clarke Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Watching teams like Watford and Palace in the FA Cup, it makes me realise what an almighty chance we had over the last 3 seasons. Namely one season in particular. Cheers Poch.
Badger Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 If the FA Cup winners finish in a Euopa League spot (5th or 6th) does that not mean Europa qualification drops to 7th place as well ?
Batman Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Watching teams like Watford and Palace in the FA Cup, it makes me realise what an almighty chance we had over the last 3 seasons. Badger Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Watching teams like Watford and Palace in the FA Cup, it makes me realise what an almighty chance we had over the last 3 seasons. Namely one season in particular. Cheers Poch. Yes. I recall thinking how lucky Everton were to face Watford in the Cup Final in 1984. Looks like those c^nts might strike luck again with their route to the final. God what a dreadful season if spurs were to win the league, and Everton the FA Cup. Not even the skates missing promotion would compensate for that.
S-Clarke Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 both this and last season also. more so this season. So much opportunity has been missed this year Still of the opinion that a side with Morgan, Wanyama, Lallana, Lambert, Shaw, Lovren should have got to a final - and would have, if MP had taken it seriously.
Batman Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Still of the opinion that a side with Morgan, Wanyama, Lallana, Lambert, Shaw, Lovren should have got to a final - and would have, if MP had taken it seriously. true, but the common consensus is this is a stronger squad/team not that I agree with that. safe to say, the last couple of years have been an opportunity missed in the cups
Badger Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Still of the opinion that a side with Morgan, Wanyama, Lallana, Lambert, Shaw, Lovren should have got to a final - and would have, if MP had taken it seriously. Definitely. MP's mis-management of that was a disgrace, possibly as suggested on here at the time that C^ntese had only given an incentive for a league place, and probably also that MP knew where he was going at the end of the season.
Batman Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 (edited) Arsenal out what a season Watford are having another cracking game from deeney Edited 13 March, 2016 by Batman
Lord Duckhunter Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 If the FA Cup winners finish in a Euopa League spot (5th or 6th) does that not mean Europa qualification drops to 7th place as well ? Could have done with Arsenal winning that one , relying on Man Utd or West Ham now
Dark Munster Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 If the FA Cup winners finish in a Euopa League spot (5th or 6th) does that not mean Europa qualification drops to 7th place as well ? Correct.
Pamplemousse Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 There are 7 European spots. 4 in the Champions League and 3 in the Europa League. 2 Europa League spots are reserved for the winners of the League Cup and FA Cup. Man City, as League Cup winners, already have a European spot, so if they finish in the top 5 then 6th place will effectively get their spot. If the FA Cup winners finish in the top 6 then the team that finishes 7th in the league will get that particular European spot. As it seems likely that Watford, Crystal Palace and (possibly) Everton will finish below us, ideally we want Man Utd or West Ham to win the FA Cup. Of course, we could finish in 6th spot anyway...
Lord Duckhunter Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 What happens if Man Utd or Liverpool win Europa and finish above us , would we still have 3 Europa Spots and therefore 8th would do it
Badger Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 What happens if Man Utd or Liverpool win Europa and finish above us , would we still have 3 Europa Spots and therefore 8th would do it The Europa winners go into next season's CL , but I think the downside is that 4th place from the league go into the Europa as England are only allowed 4 places in the CL (even if we also win the CL).
Batman Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 what a goal (again) from Payet I hope we get a player like him in the summer
Lord Duckhunter Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 The Europa winners go into next season's CL , but I think the downside is that 4th place from the league go into the Europa as England are only allowed 4 places in the CL (even if we also win the CL). Spain had 5 this year

Dark Munster Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 (edited) No, if Man Utd or Liverpool win Europa and not finish in the top 4, they go into the CL along with the top 4 (i.e. 5 CL spots). But one Europa spot is eliminated to compensate (if they would also qualify for Europa by league). So 8th cannot qualify for Europe. The only way 7th can qualify is if the winner of the FA cup finishes in the top 6. Edited 13 March, 2016 by Dark Munster
shurlock Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Definitely. MP's mis-management of that was a disgrace, possibly as suggested on here at the time that C^ntese had only given an incentive for a league place, and probably also that MP knew where he was going at the end of the season. The infamous, Glasgow Saint inspired 8th place finish incentive. You absolute clown.
shurlock Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 United 1-1. Most realistically, a European place requires United winning the cup.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 United equalize, Atkinson is pleased as he been favoring utd, west ham should have had a pen...

The only way 7th can qualify is if the winner of the FA cup finishes in the top 6. Cheers, so only 7 clubs can qualify for Europe . Either 4 & 3 or 5 & 2
Saints foreva Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 United equalize, Atkinson is pleased as he been favoring utd, west ham should have had a pen... Personally thought West Ham's keeper was fouled for the goal as well.
Badger Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 The infamous, Glasgow Saint inspired 8th place finish incentive. You absolute clown. I thought there were a few more reliable posters than him who had speculated on this at the time.
CB Fry Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 The infamous, Glasgow Saint inspired 8th place finish incentive. You absolute clown. The incentive was that Poch would have been given a man-size golden teaspoon upon finishing eighth. Well, I say man-size. It was the same height as Nicola Cortese so better described as "adequately sized".
CB Fry Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 When does our coefficient go down the toilet and we are left with only three CL places?
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Personally thought West Ham's keeper was fouled for the goal as well. Yep that too
VectisSaint Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Yep that too There's always the Fair Play route. Oh wait.
Batman Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 When does our coefficient go down the toilet and we are left with only three CL places? Sure I read not so long ago that another 2 seasons like this and will be in serious danger You would think next season, it will improve Some seriously good managers will have arrived and/already settled
SW5 SAINT Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Still of the opinion that a side with Morgan, Wanyama, Lallana, Lambert, Shaw, Lovren should have got to a final - and would have, if MP had taken it seriously. Would have been better than Leicester this season.
Professor Posted 13 March, 2016 Posted 13 March, 2016 Personal opinion is that Europa League via the qualifiers is not worth the effort. Disrupts pre-season and carries risks of injury for players who have hardly had time to recover from the last season. Our good performance in the first half of 2014/15 was down to a good run of results in the early season with no European involvement. Our exit from the Euro league competition in 2015/16 after 4 qualifying games was accompanied by a poor start in the Premier League - only one win in our first 6 games. If Watford win the FA Cup and finish mid-table, that would suit me but it might mean a relegation struggle for Watford next season.
SaintBobby Posted 14 March, 2016 Posted 14 March, 2016 I think I'd rather skip Europa this season. We got in by a mathematical fluke last season (League Cup and FA Cup winners being in the top 6 and us in 7th) That may happen again, but I hope not. If we storm into 5th place or 6th and are ripping our way up the division, fair enough. But getting into this tournament (which no one much cares about) on some bizarre chain of results that ends with us ahead of, say, Everton on goals scored or goal difference is just a joke. Best avoided.
Redslo Posted 14 March, 2016 Posted 14 March, 2016 (edited) When does our coefficient go down the toilet and we are left with only three CL places? It is looking like it will not happen this year which means that it is safe through the 2017-2018 season. The Juventus-Bayern Munich game is important. If Juventus is knocked out Italy probably cannot catch England this year. However, it is looking like England and Italy will start next year pretty close to even so the results next year could take away the fourth slot for 2018-2019. On the other hand, if Juventus wins and goes on to the finals and both Man City and Arsenal are knocked out this week, it could still happen this year. Because of how well Italy did last season, the fourth spot is going to remain potentially at risk for the next three years. Edited 14 March, 2016 by Redslo
