SAINTS vs Liverpool Build Up Thread

Great win at Stoke, but to me this is another 6 pointer if we want a top 7 finish- really need a win in that case.

Key question- does Wanyama go straight into the team? I think he will go into the team in place of Romeu:/ not that I'd necessarily like him to.

Forster

Cedric Fonte VVD Bertrand Targett

Romeu Clasie

Davis

Pelle Long

352- with Cedric and Targett as win backs of course.

Bench: Stekelenburg, Martina, Yoshida, JWP, Wanyama, Tadic and Mane (if red card gets recinded)

Wanyama to come on to defend lead once we take the lead ;)

Haven't beaten them since 2013- desperate for that to change.

On a final note, hope our fans stop fixating themselves on booing Lovren and Lallana, getting tedious now, and Lallana has really found some good form of late.

Prediction: 2-2, Firmino and Coutinho for them, Long and VVD for us I say :)

Liverpool like to play with a few light and tricky #10's like Firmino, Lallana and Coutinho so Wanyama has to start for me. We need him to be physical in midfield. Obviously Lallana will be a focal point but hopefully our fans stop booing him. It nearly always has the opposite effect and he's been one of their better players lately.

Do we really want to put Victor "bull in a china shop" Wanyama up against a light and tricky no.10 and ask him to be physical. Victor now has a reputation among refs as a dirty bastard, we are getting **** all (apart from red cards) from refs this season and Liverpool always get the ref on side against us. Five minutes in and Judas will be rolling around on the floor clutching his face every time Victor gets within five yards, the Liverpool fans will be influcing the ref (something the saints fans never seem to do at SMS) and we will be playing with 10 men yet again.

3 at the back for me.

-----------Forster

---fonte--van dijk---bertrand

Cedric------------------------targett

------wanyama---clasie

------------davis

------pelle-------long

Keep things solid, tadic to come on for davis after a while.

As for not booing Lallana...he always freezes against us so keep it up. Trick is to not give Lovren so much abuse as that always seems to fire them up...

Can't say i'm looking forward to this game really, the league cup game in December was a low point of the Koeman era.

Hopefully Man United really go at them on Thursday night and take it to extra time with plenty of challenges flying in.

with the exception of Austin we should be fully fit and ready to go , just not sure if Liverpool's tactics suit our style of play, i think Koeman will be cautious and play 5 at the back.

Well we won't have Caulker, which will give us an advantage straight away. The goals we let in during that game were mainly down to his total ineptness and inaability to be a defender.

I am with the second post.

Midfield should be Classie, Romeu and Davis (possibly with JWP in there as well - I would like us to try 4-4-2 with a midfield diamond). Their threat is through players who are quick on the ball and who will play with a lot of energy. Stop Firmino / Coutinho and we will largely stop Liverpool. We don't need a bruiser to do that; we need mobile midfielders who close down quickly and don't give loads of free-kicks away. Plus, Romeu is much neater on the ball; if they press Wanyama aggressively he will get tackled then bring someone down trying to win the ball back = yellow card.

I would go with:

-------------------Forster-------------------

Cedric ----- Fonte---- Big Dijk---Bertrand

-------------------Classie------------------

---------JWP-----------------Romeu-------

-------------------Davis--------------------

-------------Long----Pelle-----------------

Personally, I think we play better football with Tadic and/or Mane in the team but I think we need to keep it tight for the first half, at least. The cup match was embarrassing and we need to make sure they don't get up a head of steam. Tadic or Mane can come on for JWP or Davis once we've established a solid platform.

Long and Pelle should be able to cause them problems if Bertrand and Cedric can get forwards.

God no, that's an open invitation to Clyne and Moreno to spend the entire game in our half.

Personally I think as we found out against Chelsea and the better teams playing five at the back will cause possession to be surrendered as the midfield is outnumbered. I would prefer four at the back with Clasie, Wanyama and Romeu in midfield and play the same front three. Playing Long as the front man with Pelle in support worked well and pulled Stoke around, Tadic gives us a natural left sided player whilst Romeu has shown an appetite for supporting the attackers. I prefer Soares to Martina at right back but I wouldn't be surprised to see the physically stronger Martina play even though his positioning is sometimes suspect.

This is winnable.I have no idea who the Ref will be but of late we don't get many favours against the Scousers. Vic can do the business for me.

Roger East. He refereed the win at home over Swansea and the defeat at Man City.

His only game of Liverpool's this season was the defeat at West Ham.

If Vic comes back, drop Davis and keep Romeu & Clasie in the side. SD has been toss in possession for the last couple of weeks, one well-struck corner aside, so it's not as if we'd lose any attacking potency.

Strange, I think Davis has been outstanding in possession for most of the season.

Interestingly one of the biggest criticisms I have of Davis his habit of pointing and doing nothing leaving it to others. He rarely gets close enough to press and mostly just shuffles around to within about four or five yards of opponents then moves on to the next one never getting in a tackle or block.

Tonight Koeman on MNF with Sky's box of video tricks analysed with Jamie Carragher Stoke's goal on Saturday. Initially he praised Martina for centrally picking up Arnautovich but then criticised him for not getting back out to the corner quickly enough to block the cross. Then he highlighted Davis who was standing in a closer position instead of getting in and blocking the cross, did his usual pointing and didn't bother to move, leaving Martina who had further to go to get a block in. Koeman said Davis should have got in and blocked the cross instead of just pointing and doing nothing.

I like this mindset. I would like to see a Clasie, Wanyama, Romeu midfield as well. With possibly Clasie playing a bit more forward feeding precision passes to Long's runs. The question become who best fits for the remaining two forwards if you have Long up front. There are plenty to choose from: Tadic, Mane, JWP, Pelle, Davis, Austin, JRod

-------------Forster--------------

Cedric---Fonte---VvD---Betrand

---Romeu--Clasie--Wanyama---

-------Pelle---------Tadic--------

--------------Long----------------

Possibly Mane in for Pelle in this formation, if available.

Leaving aside the fact that he's a hugely over-rated propaganda footballer for a moment, I was referring specifically to the run of games since he came back into the team against Swansea. Look back through the match threads - quite a lot of criticism of his wayward passing and general sloppiness in possession.

Are you sure you're not getting Davo and Ward-Prowse mixed up? After all it was Davis' corner which found Pelle's head v Stoke.

Not forgetting the 40 yard through ball to Long to set up tadic for No 3 (oh, forgot, Tadic ****ed that up), or the involvement in the build up to the Tadic penalthy shout (which Mason ****ed up)

LOL at the Davis Hater. Basing his hatred on the match threads on here, i.e. by people probably not even watching the game (or Mongs as No 1 Troll would call them), and if you actually want to check the match threads out, making up the stuff in the first place. Nothing but praise on the Stoke thread, one negative comment on Sunderland (his corners were gash) and one negative comment on the Boscombe thread. Unfortunately with a person like Verlaine, his pathological dislike of a Saints player, indeed our skipper on Saturday means his judgement is clouded to such a degree that he becomes a complete joke.

All that said, Davis has not been his best since his return from injury, but was close on Saturday. I very much doubt that Koeman will drop him for Liverpool and we currently have no-one better in this position.

I am more worried about the referee than the opposition. That's a pretty damning indictment of the current crop!

ahhh but these things apparently even themselves out so I expect Liverpool to pick up a couple of reds and have a blatant penalty denied followed by saints winning a deep injury time penalty after Pelle dives like a big girls blouse when Lovern brushes his left ankle......

Well obviously don't tell them that!

Tbh I don't think Mane has been particularly questionable this season, he was this up and down last year too. Wanyama's form just went off a cliff and given his general ability to get himself banned and still paid I think we should seriously consider not picking him for the rest of the year - though that might affect his value.
