Saints Transfers Thread - Deadline Day

Back to the topic of new signings.

If we don't get a few more key players in, who have obvious pedigree and track record then all I can say id the Board are 'playing with fire'. Hope they are right in thinking we can stay up with the current squad. Risky but very profitable if we finish between 17th and 14th.

Perhaps Reed is busy looking at his and the clubs bank balance? :poundit:

I like Romeu. I think he has the potential to be a very good player. He's intelligent and, despite making some rash challenges, has been rewarded with a starting spot so, in a sense, has justified the faith of Puel et al.

However, I don't believe that he will be given the chance to shine this year owing to the formation change - as the sole DM in front of the back four, he does not have a like-minded partner to rely upon. The Diamond formation is more attacking, and will leave Romeu a lot more exposed. It is my opinion that he will do just as well as Wanyama would do in the same position (that is, not as well as he would with a partner).

With regards to incoming transfers, my point is that, on the basis of the above, I don't think buying a new DM will help the defence to a degree substantial enough to garner necessary funding. Romeu will be doing a sufficient enough job as is. Whether the formation change is a good thing or not is another debate altogether (although my opinion is that, as of yet, it is an unconvincing switch - not least of all because the majority of players have been using the old system for two or more years, but also because I believe we are leaving the full-backs too exposed).

If we really must invest funds into a new player (all the evidence suggests that we may bring in one more player at best), then I think it is likely that we'll bring in a young player who is flexible in playing across the attacking line. Such a player would prove a good investment for the future, and could provide immediate support in reinforcement on the pitch.

Romeu is poor defensively. Gets done regularly and gives the ball away to easily when in defensive positions (in that case very similar to wanyama). What Romeu, Clasie and apparently PEH are all good at is striding forward, riding challenges and piging good passes about going forward.

Thats great for attacking.... but we're gonna leak like a sieve due to play coming straight through the middle... and we'er open on the flanks because of how narrow we set up. Hope we score more :)

Romeu is not yet the finished article that's obvious but he needs a run in the side and some of Puels magic.

If anyone can make Romeu top drawer it's Puel IMHO. Look at what he did with Thierry Henry, Ben Arfa and Vincent Koziello

That's a really good point. Lets hope he is able to improve the whole squad particularly the younger players

I am not suggesting foulplay. Not at all. However, I am suggesting that the best way to maximise profits is to spend as little as possible if you are confident that you can stay up, even if that means 17th.

It seems that running a tight ship is the priority of the board and who can blame after we nearly went bankrupt a few years ago.

Under this policy we could easily cope with relegation and a good chance of coming back up.

I call this a 'sustainable' programme which after all was the model we were all told the club would follow.

Have we put a bid in for Boufal? I have had time to think and believe the way we do business is smart. Sure we could go out tommorow and sign three Carlos kick a balls for millions. But that just isn't the way we do things. I think Redmond and Hojbjerg are fantastic signings.

As for bringing in players I would go for Idrissa Gueye and Will Hughes both young and fit the mould. Then spend extra on Bas Dost.

I doubt Everton would be keen on selling their new signing already...

I cant see Gueye leaving Everton after only 2 weeks

He's pretty strong and a fighter. Good in the air. A little bit more pace than Austin, I'd say. Not very technical, and will need good support from the sides.

I agree, you need a player like Ziyech to deliver the crossballs for a player like Dost. It's really weird that Ziyech is still at Twente...

Could have said the same about Tadic

I rate Ziyech even higher than Tadic when it comes to creativity and creating chances. Maybe PL-clubs believe he's too fragile to play in the PL? It can't be the asking price (give or take 10 million pounds) as British clubs are loaded with money.

Yeah, it's very strange that he hasn't been picked up yet.

Is that the sum total of our ambition?

Yes. The club is not going to be bailed out by Kat if they **** it up - we are in a fairly unique position where we are a small club with an owner who is happy with the management to run the club. Take a look at other teams around us and owning the club is a status symbol for them and a key part of why they bought the respective clubs. I prefer having people who know how to do their jobs doing them rather than the dildo brothers at West Ham - for example.

It's when they come for Uncle Les, Ralph and Rogers that we will be ****ed!
