John B Posted 8 March, 2016 Share Posted 8 March, 2016 Thirty Years Ago today we beat Brighton 2 0 to get into the FA Cup Semi Final I looked at the line up Peter Shilton Steve Baker Mark Wright Kevin Bond Nick Holmes David Armstrong Jimmy Case Glenn Cockerill George Lawrence Steve Moran Danny Wallace and realized they were all English I doubt we could put out an all English team today but it shows how football has changed On saturday we had two English starters and two on the bench
John B Posted 8 March, 2016 Author Share Posted 8 March, 2016 We could have a really good team if we combined those in 1986 with those of today I would go for Peter Shilton Cedric Soares Mark Wright Virgil VanDijk Ryan Bertrand David Armstrong Jimmy Case Steven Davis Graziani Pelle Steve Moran Danny Wallace

lumuah Posted 8 March, 2016 Share Posted 8 March, 2016 Crikey, i've been a Saints fan for 30 years. How did that happen? I remember watching the legend that is Steve Baker....

Oh how we could do with a Jimmy Case in the side today, don't think we've had one since .... well since Jimmy Case.

Turkish Posted 8 March, 2016 Share Posted 8 March, 2016 Did we not play in European competitions around that time? We certainly did. Top 5 finishes two seasons in a row, European Football, two FA Cup semi finals in 3 seasons, a brilliant team with first choice England internationals and top young players like Steve Moran and Danny Wallace mixed in with quality older players like Jimmy Case, Joe Jordan. That was the first saints team I started watching and I thought it would always be like that. After Adrian Heath made me cry in 1984 my dad gave me the best bit of advise he ever did, something along the lines of "you'll get used to days like this". ericb Posted 8 March, 2016 Share Posted 8 March, 2016 Jesus this thread makes me feel old, my first game was the 84 season. Cov at home and we won 9-3 I think. I remember my older brother telling me not to get used to it, how right he was! To be fair I genuinely think the last few years, coming up the leagues till now, has been almost as much fun as those days. Hopefully we don't now have a branfoot inspired drop to come! Dalek2003 Posted 8 March, 2016 Share Posted 8 March, 2016 David Armstrong 'bald eagle' was one of the great unsung heroes of Saints. Consistent and reliable, a leader on the pitch and a loyal servant.

spyinthesky Posted 8 March, 2016 Share Posted 8 March, 2016 Begs the questions 1. Who was the first foreign player in modern times who played for us (think I know the answer to this) 2. Ditto first black player (not sure) 3. Who was our first ever sub (not sure)

Ditto first black player (not sure) 3. Who was our first ever sub (not sure) 1. Ivan Golac 2. Bit of a trick question as the first black player I think was Alf Charles, a GK in the 1920's or 30's (no doubt one of our historians will confirm). Of more modern times, 1970's onwards I think it was Osher Williams or Tony Sealey (a season or two before Danny Wallace, Reuben Agboola, and Chicken George). 3. No idea... In a league fixture I believe it was 8th September 1965 - Division 2 (when Division 2 was actually Division 2) - Saints 1 Coventry 0 - half-back Ken Wimshurst came on from keeper John Hollowbread (I think this was Hollowbread' last competitive appearance for Saints). Not sure if we used a substitute prior to this in a non-competitive fixture.
