Wes Tender Posted 3 March, 2016 Share Posted 3 March, 2016 I can't see a thread on this, but there is potential for a cataclysmic catastrophe if this Dam gives way as engineers suggest it might well do. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/02/mosul-dam-engineers-warn-it-could-fail-at-any-time-killing-1m-people
Mr Biscuits Posted 3 March, 2016 Share Posted 3 March, 2016 Do you know, I'm actually really tired of hearing about Afghanistan. And the Middle East in general. That's actually really bad of me, but I'm just sick and tired of it all. So anther potential disaster looms and yet more people could die.

Mosul is in Iraq so we'll count that as the Middle East in general shall we. It is also a bit of an IS stronghold so perhaps it getting washed away wouldn't displease everyone. badgerx16 Posted 3 March, 2016 Share Posted 3 March, 2016 ..... It is also a bit of an IS stronghold so perhaps it getting washed away wouldn't displease everyone. I would suspect that the vast majority of people downstream of the dam don't support IS.
Wes Tender Posted 4 March, 2016 Author Share Posted 4 March, 2016 I would suspect that the vast majority of people downstream of the dam don't support IS. You're right, an event like that does not discriminate against people on grounds of religion, or politics. This is an event that has a real chance of happening judging from what has been said and it is a shame to see that there are those who don't have enough humanity in them to give a sh*t about it. I didnt watch the programme but from previous news items it seems you need to re-point the joints and maintain the earthworks regularly otherwise it will eventually fail. The Iraqi engineers cant get into the area because of IS and obviously IS arent doing it.
Saint in Paradise Posted 4 March, 2016 Share Posted 4 March, 2016 I have copied and pasted the following from just one other website as these men have put what I feel better than I could. "The Iraqis built it, the SIS wanted to control the region let them sort it out. Japan did not run a fund raising to cover the damage of the tsunami on their nuclear plant". "All these WORLD disasters whether man made or natural or due to war are a WORLD problem not a European responsibility. Merkel made a massive mistake opening the gates to millions of refugees from Syria one we will now pay for for decades to come! Until a true World organisation with clout and decisive Action is formed and a strong policy on how to sort any world disaster then the soft touch, cannot agree Europeans, will continue creating problems for themselves by taking on responsibility which should be shared and by making weak decisions which are not to our benefit or the refugees benefit long term". "If a dam in Iraq is faulty, why is it our problem? Is every damn thing our problem? If a dam in Scotland is faulty, is anyone in Iraq going to 'give a' "? "It's about time we let these guys look after themselves, or are we going to nursemaid them until the end of time....?" "They don't want us until they can't handle, then it's all Sob City". While i have some sympathy with the overall sentiments of what you post I spotted a tinge of irony in this statement. If we cant get 28 european nations to agree what chance the world? We already have the UN and it has to compromise so much to get anything done.

Doubtless dam repairing is a sin punishable by beheading or perhaps simply being thrown from the top of the dam under IS' strict and not even slightly insane interpretation of Islam.
