Saint-Armstrong Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Saints win, again. Saints keep a clean sheet, again. Six games in a row without conceding. We're now up to 6th in the table, and one point behind Manchester United in 5th. Seven points behind Manchester City in 4th. Shane Long with the only goal this time, which goes down as his 6th league goal of the season. Thought Saints did a job on Swansea today. Looked compact, tidy and got our goal and then defended well. A proper away day performance. Over to you...
Saintandy666 Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 And 6th placed guaranteed till next time round! None of the games in hand-ers can catch us. 5th place and direct to Europa without fuss would be very nice indeed
Colinjb Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Cheering on Norwich.... 6th in the League, nice.
Jimmy_D Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 So, late charge for Champions League qualification and the Golden Glove award?
Ohio Saint Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 A masterclass in picking a team that I thought would get us stuffed and proved me wrong. I love being proved wrong in this way!!
doddisalegend Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Clean sheet again one point behind Man U ....Wow
Saint Charlie Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Excellent win even if we didn't really click in attack. Davis looked much better in central midfield - should always start in there when fit. Lovely pass to Cedric who ironically made the kind of run Davis hadn't. Long played well and the goal will help him as they had dried up a bit for him since Arsenal. Romeu and Clasie good and all CBs excellent. Only slight frustration for me was Pelle - didn't play well. 5th or 6th is up for grabs this season.
Red Alert Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Two shots on target against us today but never in any danger of conceding. We are looking so strong at the back recently.
Batman Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 great win thought the initial set up was not that good, was a dull first half. Much better with Cedric on the right. Long surely has made Pelle a fixture on the bench. He is a much better 'target man'. VvD was a beast Rom, Clasie, JwP were good. Long my MoM closely followed by VvD
Baird of the land Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Extremely solid defensively excluding Yoshida's moment of clumsiness late on. We lacked enough attacking intent at times though. No doubt Pelle will come in for some stick. Personally thought he was much better 2nd half linking with Long. I was screaming for Mane to come on but just then a corking ball into the box from JWP and a nice header from long.
Jimmy_D Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Two shots on target against us today but never in any danger of conceding. We are looking so strong at the back recently. Must be close to a perfect tactic Koeman's found for us here, defensively at least.
Saint-Armstrong Posted 13 February, 2016 Author Posted 13 February, 2016 A season that looked like it was petering out into a complete nothingness is now all about getting into Europe again. Forget last time, let's qualify again and let's do it properly next season. Well done to Koeman for turning it around and lifting us out of that slump, too. Some doubted if he would.
alpine_saint Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Away win and into 6th. Whats not to like ? Well, only the fact that it was inspite of Koeman's team selection, not because of it. Does he fancy Pelle ?
ScepticalStan Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Well blow me down this is going brilliantly! I can't for the life of me understand how or why we've had multiple months of relegation form followed by several months now of basically title-winning form, rather than something more balanced but yeah fantastic stuff!
Batman Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Two shots on target against us today but never in any danger of conceding. We are looking so strong at the back recently. we had more than 2 shots on target
Suhari Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 A good team performance, and really good away performance. Not much else to say really. Do that away, score a few more at home: happy days. #Itshappening
Andy Durman Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Schneiderlin and all that glory!!! 1 point away.
skintsaint Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Does he fancy Pelle ? I mean who doesn't Great win, another clean sheet and up the table we march! 1 point behind Utd..would not have thought that at the start of the year after the FA Cup loss....
Pass the Dutchie Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 This time last year we were 5th with 46 points. Now 6th with 40 points, but with a growing confidence and a higher quality squad. Europe is there for the taking.
washsaint Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Excellent win - have to say that our style has disappeared. We are a boring side to watch - but 6 clean sheets in a row can't be argued against. Where would we be in the table if Forster had been fit all season? Listening to him on NBC he was immense the way he organized the back line. Romeu will be some player for us as will Clasie. JWP was excellent today, Virgil was a steal and is at least as good as Toby (how many headers does Virgil lose, if any?). Hopefully we can really push on for a top 5 finish which would be astonishing after our long, terrible run.
Pamplemousse Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 A season that looked like it was petering out into a complete nothingness is now all about getting into Europe again. Forget last time, let's qualify again and let's do it properly next season. Well done to Koeman for turning it around and lifting us out of that slump, too. Some doubted if he would. And by finishing 5th or 6th (depending on the cup winners) we may not have to go through the qualifying rounds this time
Bewildered Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Some of the attacking play was frustrating, esp. in the first half but defence was good enough that we only needed to score once. Only 1pt behind Man U now. 5th place is definitely there for the taking this season.
saint lard Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Bloody lovely....Shane Long is ruddy marvelous Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Saint-Armstrong Posted 13 February, 2016 Author Posted 13 February, 2016 On a side note, today's win lifts Ronald Koeman onto the 100 point mark as Saints boss. Some going.
GarrettIvo Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Excellent results around us as well. Pity Norwich couldn't hang on. That may hurt them down the stretch.
Pamplemousse Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Dalek will be popping out the champagne, we've reached 40 points!!!
adrian lord Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Great result. Scousehampton nowhere to be seen in the top half lol
Saint_clark Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Playing devils advocate, in the last two games Austin has had Shane Long in a fantastic position but has shot from a stupid angle with a player in the way - not a fan of that. Possible reason he's being left on the bench for now?
saintadjg Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 VVD outstanding yet again. Surely there'll be bids for him in the summer. JWP was fantastic. Pelle was awful yet again.
Pass the Dutchie Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Toby was and is very good of course, but I wonder how many Saints fans would want to trade him for VVD at this point given the chance.
Saint Charlie Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 On a side note, today's win lifts Ronald Koeman onto the 100 point mark as Saints boss. Some going. Hopefully get him signed to a new contract in the summer. We are probably the best gig in town unless Man Utd or Chelsea come in for him. Excellent Manager.
The Kraken Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Away win and into 6th. Whats not to like ? Well, only the fact that it was inspite of Koeman's team selection, not because of it. Does he fancy Pelle ? Unlike you to see the negative in anything. Great tactics from Koeman, he got it spot on, Saints were superb.
Saint_clark Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Toby was and is very good of course, but I wonder how many Saints fans would want to trade him for VVD at this point given the chance. Tough one, I'd say Aldeweireld has proven himself to be the best in the Prem and probably one of the best in the world. However Van Dijk has another two years on him. I'd probably stick.
stknowle Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's about it really. Oh, apart from GTFI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bpsaint Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Playing devils advocate, in the last two games Austin has had Shane Long in a fantastic position but has shot from a stupid angle with a player in the way - not a fan of that. Possible reason he's being left on the bench for now? Ridiculous decision for him to try and shoot towards the end, would have been a much more comfortable last few minutes with a second. Never expected us to lose today so very happy with the win. As others have said we did a proper job on Swansea today, decent away performance soaking up the pressure and them hitting them with a sucker punch. Onwards and upwards we go.
badgerx16 Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Dalek will be popping out the champagne, we've reached 40 points!!! Early on in the match thread he said we needed 43; "All hotting up in the bottom third of the league. I would settle for a draw today. Think we will need 43 points this season."
Shance Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 We are averaging the least amount of shots on our goal and most shots we do concede are speculative ones at best. Van Dijk has been absolutely fantastic and for me just pips Clasie as the motm. He is the perfect sweeper type cb and he is nearly as good as SRL in the air. The only place we aren't clicking atm is up front, but people need to realise if you are concentrating more on defense then you will sacrifice some attacking flair. I was disappointed with Pelle today but he really doesn't look match fit atm. Austin is so much more mobile and has some good pace. I'd like to see him start against Chelsea. Romeu once again showing us that Wanyama isn't going to be a big miss. He was very highly rated at Chelsea when he was younger but had a big injury. He's building back up to being that player again.
bpsaint Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 On a side note, today's win lifts Ronald Koeman onto the 100 point mark as Saints boss. Some going. Not even 2 full seasons into his reign either, brilliant stat and a great feeling, espicially as a fan whose first experience of supporting us was annual relegation battles!
Shance Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Toby was and is very good of course, but I wonder how many Saints fans would want to trade him for VVD at this point given the chance. As much as I love VVD, I'd rather have Toby. He's been the best CB in the whole league so far this season.
CalneSaint Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Excellent away win, 3pts, clean sheet, loving this upturn in fortunes
Jonnyboy Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Playing devils advocate, in the last two games Austin has had Shane Long in a fantastic position but has shot from a stupid angle with a player in the way - not a fan of that. Possible reason he's being left on the bench for now? Nah, the opposite. He's desperate to score because he's new and been sat on the bench.
Shance Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 Ridiculous decision for him to try and shoot towards the end, would have been a much more comfortable last few minutes with a second. Never expected us to lose today so very happy with the win. As others have said we did a proper job on Swansea today, decent away performance soaking up the pressure and them hitting them with a sucker punch. Onwards and upwards we go. Pretty sure it was a cross towards Long that bounced off the defender??
Jonnyboy Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 As much as I love VVD, I'd rather have Toby. He's been the best CB in the whole league so far this season. And probably last season too.
Saints foreva Posted 13 February, 2016 Posted 13 February, 2016 As much as I love VVD, I'd rather have Toby. He's been the best CB in the whole league so far this season. I'd rather have both....
