FFP, new contracts and the momey in the prem now...

The money seems to have gone crazy lately in the prem....

Vardy signing for 80k per week, Payet getting £125k per week *****il he is 34!). One of those two clubs has already breached FFP, the other will surely breach it now and how are they able to add that much to their wage bills in one chunk? I thought FFP prevents clubs from increasing their wage bill too much in one season?!?!

How do we feel as saints fans? I am actually pleased with our wage structure and not having any players on more than 50k (According to FM 2016 granted)... I don't think the money can last forever and we seem to be signing players that are young, try hard and are in it for more than just the money?

But can we compete? Everton are about to announce a multi million pound takeover my Americans, West Ham are splashing silly money, as our teams like Newcastle, stoke and Leicester...

Where do saints sit within this as I can never see us offering 125k within the next couple of years! And I am pleased about that as well. It is just a total detachment from the modern fan and wrong frankly. Rather than paying that kinda wage they could be dropping ticket prices to £10 for example...

I suspect that Leicester have room in their ffp allowance for one or two players on 4 mil a year.

Our wage cap is not 2.5 mil a year. We pay well - Austin would have waited until he was a free agent if we weren't very very competitive.

With all these extra £billions coming into the PL...and going straight into the already mega-rich players pockets...let's hope some of these new fat contracts aren't too long because if this breakaway European Super League comes off, that's where the TV money will be going. It could leave every club outside the 'Big Six' in financial meltdown.

I think there is a huge over estimation of the public interest on a European Super League.

But if the top six go off to it, fair enough. See ya.

Personally, I would have a passing interest but not much, but I am someone who is only interested in the CL when there's an English team in it late on, much like Andy Murray in the US Open. Oh, the semis is it? Go on, then.

EuroMegaLeague? Couldn't give a monkeys.

But, Saints vs Villa vs Leeds vs Newcastle vs Forest vs Sheffield Weds vs West Ham vs Derby in the English Premier League? Yep, sign me up for twenty odd years of that and I'd happily never watch a Chelsea or Manchester City match ever again.

A break away super league is not going to happen.

People have been predicting this for 10+ years and in that time, the premier league bubble was going to burst.

Not happening

I've got no stomach what so ever for a Euro Super League but if it does ever come off, and this suggests it could be getting closer

Then there's only one place the big TV revenue is going.

English football would then be a better place for an old git like me, but that's only if what's left aren't all going bankrupt.

Exactly this. Let this mega league go and make all their masses of cash playing against the Chinese champions. Most people won't care.

Could most of the best players end up in China?

Cant believe they are offering Rooney a reported £500k a week, and he's one of the **** ones.

Couldn't care less if they do! I don't see a panic or worry like Wenger etc do, let all the mercenaries f**k off, we may end up with a league full of British players again, which may lead to a more competitive England team.

The popularity of English football within this country has nothing to do with having the best players. The popularity of English football outside this country has a bit to do with having the best players. If we lost the great players that play in England to a nation like China we'd lose income in the game but the fans wouldn't stop supporting their team so I don't really care much from a Saints perspective. Our support is not reliant on foreign fans like other clubs.

I suppose the only thing that the super league would bring is that 'the best of the rest' begins to actually mean somthing. if arsenal, city and chelsea are all playing in european league there's a realistic chance that clubs like everton and saints could finish top 3 and go up.

though I'm sure the decision makers will try hard to keep clubs like ours out of their esteemed competition

main problem , like with everything football these days, is it only favours those with cash to spend. everyday hardworking season ticket holders who sing their hearts out week after week won't be able to afford going off to spain and turkey every fortnight. only a select few rich folks will be able to actually attend away games.

If there was a European Super League would the broadcasting money follow this leaving the English National League clubs with far less revenue?

Only if those clubs participating in any ESL actually left the domestic game in order to participate, of which there's no guarantee, and I'd probably actually argue the clubs wouldn't see that move as beneficial to them.

Nice thought, but the reality is we waved the cash. The deal including transfer fee, wages, agents, signing on fee, caulker release is £20m+

We punch above our weight in the transfer market (Gaston, Osvaldo, Van Dijk, Forster, Austin). These players don't come here for the sea air.

surely you'd say they come here because they want to play in the premiership. sure, the money is a bigger-than-we'd-like-to-admit factor, but we are a solid club with aspirations to be top 8, good squad, good manager. it's not just the cash in reality. none of those players would go straight into top 3 teams, mainly because the likes of chelsea and city are going to buy bigger name players and splash the cash on lads that have already proven themselves at another club in the prem...e.g. saints.

I was quite surprised arsenal went in for that eleny lad from switzerland. not a big name, not a big transfer fee, just 5m or so midfielder that goes almost straight into arsenal starting line up. that's not the norm for big clubs.

Football's on the change again, China the US, Europe may have to develop a 'Super League' to keep up, the TV companies want a global audience, that's where the future (and big money deals) are for them.

Horrible thought, but for most of us, it may see a bit of normality return to the English game, albeit with casualties along the way.

Only if it wasn't a qualifying competition, or certain clubs qualified automatically.

I don't even watch Champions League games, so my interest in a Euro League would be practically non-existent without Saints in it.

They won't because the Prem tv money is an increase in revenue which also increases the amount teams are allowed to spend on player wages. Everyone is getting it, so the whole lot goes up.

As for "I like our wage structure", you won't if we miss out on all of our targets for next season because Bournemouth or Middlesbrough are paying them more.

This is why I've been harping on about us trying to buy early and tie players to lower wage deals before the roof blows off it, but now Vardy and Payet have got good new deals everyone will be at it.

Plumber who saw the contract and told his best mate down the pub, who is a taxi driver, who told a passenger, who is your mate. Yeah?

A £10million player at £85k a week would cost a similar amount over the period of the contract. I know it's a huge amount but I think a lot of people would say it's realistic for us to spend that on a prolific striker.

The Champions League is as dull as ditchwater, as would a ESL be too. They were predicting a breakaway ESL since the 80s. Just like they always say we will put a man on Mars in the next decade, every decade since the 70s, and the oil was gonna run out by 2000...

China? Be like Major League Soccer, a big paycheck for over the hill stars before they retire to horseracing. You can't buy history, culture and passion.

For £500k a week after tax you can buy pretty much anything you like. Wouldn't be surprised to see Ronaldo going there for something mental like £1m a week.
