Fitzhugh Fella Posted 6 February, 2016 Share Posted 6 February, 2016 Bit of an argument in the pub last night trying to remember the names of the Southampton boutiques we used to use around 1970-74. We all remembered Squires near the Bargate of course but were trying to remember the two boutiques down Hanover buildings on the left next to each other. Names we came up with were Revolution, Garrisons (someone thought that was the one where the Bouzy Rouge later stood) and Gemini but none of us could be sure. Abraxas was another name thrown into the ring. Then there was Phillips in East St but no one could remember the name of a boutique next door to Phillips and also opposite. We all remembered Who Dat which was a dual hippy boutique and record store and MacQueens which came slightly later. Ravels was the trendy shoe shop near the Classic cinema. In St Marys there was Shirt King and Sydneys. It was the Hannover Rd ones that we couldn't settle on so any help much appreciated?

Lord John....on the corner of that short road leading to Portland St next to the Bargate. Excellent Emporium. spyinthesky Posted 6 February, 2016 Share Posted 6 February, 2016 One of the first men's Boutiques I used to frequent was Gran Moda at the time of the Adam and Eve club (late 60's/early 70's) Think this was either in East Street or more likely Hanover Buildings

FloridaMarlin Posted 6 February, 2016 Share Posted 6 February, 2016 Wasn't Gran Moda by The Bargate before Garrison's? It was later called something else, and the manager was Gay Glenn. Abraxas, I remember, was in the walkway between Above Bar and the old Hants & Dorset bus station. I once bought a chocolate brown velvet suit from there, in which I looked the canine's cojones. In the early-mid 90s (it might have been earlier) there was the short-lived Blazer in the precinct, next to British Home Stores.

Gemmel Posted 8 February, 2016 Share Posted 8 February, 2016 Gills Brothers - Slightly after the time line you are looking for Duncan, but late 70's early 80's in East Street. Stay press trousers, Y cardigans, Harringtons and Farah's, Every 80's kids must have.

alehouseboys Posted 9 February, 2016 Share Posted 9 February, 2016 A good place to get your Levi's, Wranglers and Lee Jeans back then was Owen Owen, usually best prices in town. And there was the Doc Martin shop for...well...DMs and Pods. Although a London concern, most football fans around in the 70s/80s would probably remember the advertising hoardings at grounds around Europe for 'Dickie Dirts Shirts'.
