Master Bates Posted 15 August, 2008 Posted 15 August, 2008 Pictures of boats stranded in the desert that was once the Aral Seafloor. The Aral Sea Between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, once the 4th largest inland sea in the world, began to dry up after the Soviets diverted the two big rivers feeding it for cotton field irrigation. It's now about 20% of what it was and shrinking.
The Banana Factor Posted 15 August, 2008 Posted 15 August, 2008 They have actually started diverting water back into it again and it is filling back up and they have reintroduced several species of ship. just goes to show we can remedy some of our **** ups!
Al de Man Posted 15 August, 2008 Posted 15 August, 2008 There are quite a few basins like this below sea-level and I think they can fill these to counteract rising seas and the effects of global warming for 50 years. The problem is convincing the third-world countries that will be flooded and lose half their land to do it for the benefit of the rest of the world.
