For the more (ahem) senior members on this forum they may be interested (and saddened) to learn that Saints forward between 1954 and 1962, Tommy Mulgrew passed away on the 12th of January - the funeral was this morning.

I just missed his career which encompassed 330 games and exactly 100 goals, so he is right up there in the all-time scorers list, indeed only 12 men have scored more goals in our history.

There was talk about debut goals after Charlie Austin's winner at OT last Saturday but I doubt if anyone will beat Tommy's debut goal for Saints which came within 15 seconds of the start of the match (and season) v Brentford 21 August 1954. He also got another in a 6-4 win. It remains the fastest ever goal scored at The Dell. As I said I never saw him play but I remember talking to Terry Paine about him once and Terry confessed that Tommy was the one player he looked up to and respected the most as a young pro starting out. A fitting epitaph.

David Bull is putting something together for the official site.

RIP Tommy. I remember Tommy well. Scored regularly, good in the air, played in the high scoring teams mostly in the third division. An old Saints player and I can't for the life of me remember who, told me that Tommy used to turn up at the station with everything in a paper bag for away matches. It was probably one of the Stoneham ex Saints who I used to play golf with.

A regular in the side when I started watching with my dad in 1959. One of a formidable, high scoring forward line of Paine, O'Brien, Reeves, Tommy and Sydenham. Sad news to hear he has passed away. RIP Tommy, thanks for the memories.

I read this with a feeling of sadness. I remember Tommy fondly from when I was living in the Polygon area as a young boy in the 50's. Apart from doing two paper rounds as a boy, I helped the milkman on his round in the Polygon area every Saturday. Tommy and Bobby McLaughlin were in 'digs' in a corner house in Harborough Road. I always made sure they got two pints of Gold Top instead of Silver Top, thinking I was building them up with Channel Islands finest milk (well, I was only a nipper!). During the season, I would race home from the round and gulp down my lunch and run across the road to the Dell. I would then approach the giant of a commissionaire at the main reception and ask for Mr. Mulgrew. Then be taken into the ground and stand right by the tunnel and watch the game for free. If memory serves me, he finished in the very early 60's. A lovely friendly man.

RIP, Tommy.

Hi Norm

Just had a pint with Sam McLaughlin (Bobby's son) tonight and told him the news. Bobby's wife is still alive and Sam was going to pass on the news. I will pass on your post to Sam.

I have fairly strong memories of Tommy Mulgrew playing as a No 10 for Saints in my very early days as a Saints supporter.

Recollect he had quite a wavy hairstyle and an unusual gait when he ran.

Seem to remember one occasion when he took the full force of one of the old (and probably wet) leather footballs in the nuts and went down shouting in agony.

Unfortunately as a young kid I found this quite funny which, of course it wasn't, as I found to my cost later in life!!!!

RIP Tommy

What a smashing memory.

Alas my life started 2 years after his career with Saints ended. But it's always sad to hear of players woven into the rich tapestry of our great club passing away.

I played a few games in a team with Bobby after he retired. A gentleman. Playing with him taught me a lot.

Norm, does the name Bainbridge mean anything to you?

What a forward line. it rolled off the tongue. Paine, OBrien, Reeves, Mulgrew and Sydenham.

and to think Derek Reeves played for Bournemouth Gasworks at Alder Road Poole before Saints. What a team, sadly he died some years ago now.

Guilty Whatever it was, I'm sorry!

Small world. Nothing to be sorry about. I think we played in the same Sunday team about 1962 ish. You lived in either Burlington Rd or Newcombe Rd, I think I used to pick you up but I'm not too clear on that but I certainly remember calling at your house.

Burlington it was! 62 ish, I was playing Wed, Sat and Sunday football, thinking I was the new John Giles or Tommy Traynor. Hah, to be fair, I was thankful for a game. When I packed up playing, I took up refereeing and I was average at that as well lol. Good times and memories.

RIP old man. What a shame; I'm gutted for him and his family. I have many fond memories of watching the aforesaid forward line (post 12) from the Milton Road end. I think I shall now change my user-name to something else: it doesn't seem right for me to carry-on as "Tommy Mulgrew" any more.

R.I.P. Mr Mulgrew

Alas my only memory of him was when I saw him at The Dell was when he

blazed a shot over the bar.

Hi Derry, sorry but us R.U. cheapskates are unable to us the PM system. I have had a

computer snag and lost all my e-mail contacts. IF you still have mine and IF you want you

could send me an e-mail?
