Pancake Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 After Charlie took all of 7 mins to score on his debut, my son asked if it was the quickest goal for a player making his first appearance for Saints. My brain isn't what it used to be and we have had so many players over the years that all I could remember was Kevin Phillips netting in the 2-2 against Leicester when he came on at half time and scored with 20 to go, so about 25 mins to get a goal. I think. Any others?
so22saint Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Alan Shearer vs Arsenal? Nicky Banger vs Oldham? Craig Maskell vs Liverpool for sure on 8 minutes (to make it 2-0 in Alan Ball's first home game in charge). Francis Benali vs Leicester (if you ignore the other 250 odd games ;-))

LeTissLeGod Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 I think Graham Baker scored 2 on his debut, it was at the Dell but I don't recall the opposition (Man City?).
angelman Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 How did I forget Shearer! Because it wasn't his debut.
norwaysaint Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Didn't Kevin Phillips score on his debut, quite a spectacular one against Leicester too I think.
Over land and sea Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Steve Moran - very first touch of the ball having come on as a sub (first goal with first touch in League football presumably since we were his first club).
happy clapper Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 not the quickest, but possibly the most under rated debut goal by Steven Davis at Manchester City in our 1st game back in the Prem.
norwaysaint Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Steven Davis scored against the champions, Man City, three minutes after coming on for his debut.
Lets B Avenue Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 I think Graham Baker scored 2 on his debut, it was at the Dell but I don't recall the opposition (Man City?). Only 1, but it was after 55 secs against Blackpool, 12/11/77 and it was on MOTD.
AussieDog Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Didn't Colin Clarke score a ha trick on his debut?
Greenridge Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Didn't Paul Rideout get a pair in his debut at The Dell after arriving from Bari? I was at the game but only a nipper so could have it completely wrong.
Dimond Geezer Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 You beat me too it. Yes he did, against QPR I think.
Dimond Geezer Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 You beat me too it. Yes he did, against QPR I think. That was a response to AussieDog's post about Colin Clarke.
Dublin Saint Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 That was a response to AussieDog's post about Colin Clarke. David Seaman in goal if my memory is correct
Lighthouse Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Leandre Griffit came on for his debut in the 82nd minute against Blackburn and scored in the 87th. Saganowski hit the bar about 15 seconds into his I think, what a start that would have been. David Connolly can't have been on more than 10 minutes against Oldham either.
FloridaMarlin Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Perhaps not the quickest but I recall seeing Micky Judd and Bobby Stokes score on their respective debuts. I seem to recall they were both Easter holiday fixtures, and it was shirtsleeves weather for both.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 I think Graham Baker scored 2 on his debut, it was at the Dell but I don't recall the opposition (Man City?). It was v Blackpool Nov 1977 and he scored after 58 seconds of his debut and the MoTD cameras were there!
John B Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Channon made his debut for Southampton as a 17-year-old in 1966, scoring in the match against Bristol City I was there
david in sweden Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 After Charlie took all of 7 mins to score on his debut, my son asked if it was the quickest goal for a player making his first appearance for Saints. I think. Any others? This is an interesting thread for " nerds " who like statistics. Firstly I will admit that I didn't do this from memory, but my well-thumbed copy of In That Number. In fact, it isn't that unusual for debutants to score. From post WW2 era, 16 players between Bobby Veck (1946-47) and Mick Channon (1965-66) achieved it. For Master Pancake's info. The fastest recorded debutant was Tommy Mulgrew in 1954-55 season, which he scored in ....15 seconds. After which, in the old Div.1 (read Prem.level) goals were harder to come by and the list is shorter...but reads; Bobby Stokes, Graham Baker, Steve Moran, Austin Hayes, Stuart McManus, Gordon Hobson, Colin Clarke, Paul Rideout, and ....Tahar El Khalej....(those others who came after have been listed by some of you already). Interestingly; of those named...only Steve Moran and Stuart McManus (and now Charlie Austin) have scored on their debuts... as an oncoming sub. **Alan Shearer's legendary hat-trick v. Arsenal at The Dell (1987)......was his home debut, as he had been a sub. in two earlier away fixtures.
david in sweden Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Perhaps not the quickest but I recall seeing Micky Judd and Bobby Stokes score on their respective debuts. I seem to recall they were both Easter holiday fixtures, and it was shirtsleeves weather for both. Actually the Micky Judd goal (I saw that one too - at Highbury) wasn't his debut , although it was his first goal but he'd been sub. in an earlier fixture v Chelsea.
david in sweden Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Mickey Evans not quite lady saint, but a good call. Mickey had been used as sub. in a couple of League games before that.
simondo Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 didn;t egil ostinstad score 2(+1) against ManU at the dell in the 6-3..?
Lets B Avenue Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 didn;t egil ostinstad score 2(+1) against ManU at the dell in the 6-3..? He did, but it wasn't his debut.
Lets B Avenue Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 It was v Blackpool Nov 1977 and he scored after 58 seconds of his debut and the MoTD cameras were there! Quicker please. Post#14.
Foxstone Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Bale? vs Derby No his debut was late on in the previous season v Sheff Wed... Did'nt score but took some great corners...
Batman Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 (edited) walcott? Away to Leeds? Edited 25 January, 2016 by Batman
SaintBobby Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Mentioned above, I think Kevin Phillips scored twice on his debut at home to Leicester
bjk Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 What about the one and only Legend Sir Matt Le Tissier.Pretty sure it was a hatrick v Leicester on his debut.
Chez Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 walcott? Away to Leeds? I think his debut was when he came on as a sub home to Wolves. The Leeds game was a while into the season. Was that his first start fro the club?
Chez Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 No his debut was late on in the previous season v Sheff Wed... Did'nt score but took some great corners... His debut was against Millwall, not Sheff Wed.
Lets B Avenue Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 What about the one and only Legend Sir Matt Le Tissier.Pretty sure it was a hatrick v Leicester on his debut. Not even close.
Chez Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Mentioned above, I think Kevin Phillips scored twice on his debut at home to Leicester it was away at Leicester. Bloody great game that. Two nil down at half time and then KP and BT score late in the second half and then we almost won it at the death.
Lets B Avenue Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Mentioned above, I think Kevin Phillips scored twice on his debut at home to Leicester Once and it was away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=LozcvDbkCtc
The Cat Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Did Patrick Colleter score on his debut? If not it was definitely one of his first few games.
St Lej Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Scott Marshall scored on his debut and on his 2nd game if i remember rightly....both crackers too
CWD Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Has nobody mentioned Rickie? 29 minutes. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/league_cup/8188512.stm Weirdly that article doesn't mention it was his debut but I'm sure it was.
CWD Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Jordan Robertson Haha great shout. He now plays for Alfreton Town for anyone else wondering. Christ we've had some dross play for us!
Dark Munster Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 Wow, that's a lot. In fact if a striker makes his debut for Saints and doesn't score he should hang his head in shame.
Tommy Mulgrew Posted 25 January, 2016 Posted 25 January, 2016 "My" memory is not what it was but I think "I" am the answer to the original question: on my debut, "I" scored the quickest ever goal at the Dell. See post 28. Unfortunately, it was downhill thereafter!
