Arsenal vs. Saints build up thread

3 is for violent conduct only. 2 for offensive behavior. Othrr offences are 1. 2 yellows is also 1. Wanyama got 2 matches because it was his second red of the season.

Happily stand corrected, thanks all - t'was automatically thinking he'd be out for 2.

I do hope Wenger picks him for our game*

*Koeman doesn't pick Pelle

Historically speaking - Away wins against Arsenal are almost as rare as those against Man.Utd, but we must hope that too may soon change.

I was " privileged " to see one of those, but it goes back almost 50 years to the Easter fixure in 1967.

Saints were without the legend that was Ron Davies (who had single-handedly saved us from relegation in our first Top tier season) and his place was taken by the diminutive reserve CF Mickey Judd.....but this match was to become a coupon-buster of the first order.

Saints scored with a rare goal from right back Joe Kirkup (tbh - even Joe would have admitted it was more of a centre than a shot).

Then came Mickey Judd's effort followed by a Terry Paine penalty (brought about by the frustration of the harrassd Arsenal defence)...and Saints ran out 3-0 winners.

Man of the Match was Saints' Jimmy Melia, (who was unfortunate to be the butt of many fans anger at The Dell), but I wish they'd been there on the day to see his masterful midfield display.

I won't be around in another 50 years, but I can only hope we can see a few repeat performances - starting this weekend.

No history lesson required - I was lucky enough to see Clyne's goal last season. :)

-------------------- Forster ----------------------

-------VvD --------- Fonte ------- Bertrand ----

Cedric ----------------------------------- Targett

----------- Wanyama --- Clasie -----------------

---- Mane --------- Austin----------Long --------

Would love to see Austin in the starting line up. I think he is much more fit than reported. I think he could have played at QPR the past few weeks, but since they knew he was leaving anyway they kept him out. Given another 10 days I would hope he's ready to go.

I'm worried with Mane's poor form. I say give him one more start and if he doesen't improve, drop him.

Don't be worried - he is still playing very well, it's just his final touch and finishing letting him down. Still our most dangerous attacking weapon.

My boss is a QPR ST holder, he said it was amazing that he is suddenly fit, he also said he is glad that he has gone to a good home.

Save your breath, he's actually seemed to have reduced his bizarre fonts and underlines lately if quoted posts are anything to go by.

Might be stretching it a bit at the moment. I think Mane is still working hard and doing his best but he is trying to force things at the moment. Snatching at shots, trying to take on more opponent basically all the signs of an attacking player trying to find the back of the net after a goal drought and putting to much pressure on himself. As soon as the boy gets a goal or two and gets his confidence back he'll be fine.

They could still hammer us, IF they hit their stride, first goal crucial.

Such an odd season though, Arsenal's points tally really isn't very good. Wenger has got away with a lot but if they can't win the league this season, when everyone is rubbish, they never will. If they do, the 4-0 defeat to us would be the worst performance I've ever seen by champions elect.

It's mainly their central midfield defensively, it's really poor. Yet on here apparently Wanyama isn't good enough for them! That mentality is half their problem too, you can't just have a good technical player in each position and forget about defence.

He finally signed a keeper after years saying he didn't need one, and it might win them the league. I don't even think they need the top striker people say, Giroud, Sanchez, Walcott, Welbeck can get enough. They're just 2 players away from dominating the league. A good CB to partner Kocieslny and a strong DM. They'd be about 10 points clear by now.

Totally agree with this I still can't fathom how Schniederlin didn't end up there when it was clearly his favoured destination if they had added VanDijk or that Belgium knobber they would be strolling this season.

I thought this game was tonight.

I haven't been paying attention. Shame, I was looking forward to that.

:mcinnes: :mcinnes:

I assume you don't have a ticket for the match?

Anyone know if Saints have taken advantage of the extended break by going away?

We'll have a two week break from Feb 13th to 27th as well good chance for warm weather training camp or a trip to Switzerland like they did last season.

Because Wengers a backwards, stubborn, stingy, niave manager that's why! Anyone with Arsenals squad, stature and resources would of bought Schiederlin in, it was a no brainer! He said he cost too much money though. Could play with his fellow frenchman Cocovan or rotate when necessary. Now Cocovan is out the team, they're struggling. Per Mertesaker is also a liability when it comes to any sort of pace or cleverness on the defensive line, can't see why he doesn't play Paulista against the Costas and Vardys etc.

Schneiderlin-25m Could instantly solidify our mid-field which has been weak defensively since Viera and Gilberto Silva left! Also suits our playing style down to a tee. No way Far too much!

Callum Chambers- 16m Could be a backup CB and RB and can also play in midfield. Oh he's played for one season at our pricey academy down south. Fine do it straight away, he's young so it'll be worth it in 5 years time.

Looking at one of the Arsenal forums they don't seem very confident of getting a result

this statement made me laugh though

seriously though, would happily swap walcott, chamberlain (sorry ox) and chambers for ward prowse, wanyama and pelle. we spent roughly £40m on that lot and unfortunately I don't we've really gained much

I agree, but he is bit greedy sometimes and does need to spot and pass to other players in better positions to score, after he has done brilliant work stretching opposition defences

Ironic, isn't it. Mind those three they paid a fortune for are inconsistant and seriously underperforming, compared to when they played for us.

That's ridiculous to want that swap. Totally unrealistic but I'd love to see AOC back here, Wenger has done a poor job with him IMO

According to wiki Oxo has made 36 appearances for us in that one season followed by 98 in the next four and half seasons since he went to Arsenal in 2011 (I realise he has had a few injuries). Probably would have got a lot more game time if he'd stayed with us a few more seasons but I very much doubt he cares.

Normally I'd expect us to come away with nothing and the odds are that this is exactly what will happen but this has been such a topsy turvey funfair ride of a season we might get lucky and hit them in a downswing just as we are in a full on purple patch.

We did it last season and I was there to see it so what the hell, why not.

If we were to upset the odds and beat the Arse at their ground a question for the statto's out there......when was the last season we managed to beat Utd, Chelsea and Arse away? Have we ever done it?

1987/88. We also won at Coventry for the first time in 40 years and Norwich after 22.

That's quite a funny read and consistent with the Arsenal fans i know in real life, they seem so despondent for a team that are so close to the top of the league, still in the Champions league and a chance of winning the FA Cup for the 3rd year in a row, they are utterly convinced they'll throw away the best chance to win the title for years.

2 points from the last 9 and struggling to score goals, tough games coming up...

because of all that i reckon they'll beat us tomorrow now!

Looking forward to tomorrow night, hope we can recreate the league cup win from last season, we've had screamers from Clyne and Martina, so whoever is playing right back will need to step up.

Likewise, my one and only visit to the Emirates.

Same! Only went to Highbury once too and we got a point then too. Saw a draw at Anfield in '00 and the 'Taibi' 3-3 at OT. Haven't done too badly on my sporadic visits to the big clubs, long may it continue!
