Saints v Manchester United (A) - Match Thread

Not a v entertaining half, but one thing clear on that evidence. We're the better team. We're closing more aggressively and edging the midfield battle. Basically, Clasie better than Schneiderlin. Think about that! Clasie's been a joy to watch. Mane has had a frustrating half. I wouldn't say he's played poorly. More that it's been desperately frustrating. That chance where he burst through had what seemed to be a brilliant first touch, but the ball landed on his thigh and threw him off. He's tried a bunch of ambitious passes which haven't come off. I think he's trying too hard. He has shown some courageous tackles including an esp tasty one against Fellaini. I think we're going to nick this 1-0. Austin's moment beckons.

Excellence performance so far by Saints. We were in complete control for long periods and looked threatening on the break. Classie having another very good game. His first time forward passing has been the only real genuine bit of class on the pitch.

Mane just can't get it right at the moment. Everything he tries fails. Hopefully he will get the rub of the green in the second half. He looks the likely man to unlock the defence, but just needs to get the ball under and go.

One big negative is our throw ins. I would go as far to say that 80% end up going straight to the opposition. The formation perhaps isn't helping, but giving the ball straight back, especially in your own half is criminal. Especially considering the effort to get it and keep it see her. Got to do better.

COYS you can beat this ****.

Spot on, good analysis. Hopefully you are good at predicting too.

Minor picky point but our throw ins, especially deep in our defensive third, are awful. Need a down the line option.

A couple of times they got shots in following us giving a throw straight to them.

I was saying the same thing. What on earth are Target, Mane, Long and Tadic playing at on throw ins. To feet, and do it quickly. Basics.

Decent first half. A mane in form would have taken that ball down and put it past De Gea. Right now things aren't quite going for him despite him doing 90% of things right.

Still not sure about Tadic being in for Davis. Despite the fact we've played well there's been a couple of occasions where we've let them get too much space on edge of the box for shots.

One of those knife edge games where first goal could easily win in.

Nice to see their crowd turning on them after 30 minutes and them being pressured into launching aimless long balls to try and apppease them

Something I noticed against Palace in the cup - our throws just slow us down and give them possession. Needs to be worked on, like a team of 9 year olds.

After 60 mins if still the same Austin for Tadic mane in the hole

Absolutely not, Tadic has played some great passes and crosses and is literally the most dangerous crosser of the ball in the Prem this season. Austin thrives on that, we need Tadic on the pitch if Austin comes on.

Been impressed with Tadic's ball retention, he seems to hang on to it and find a pass even when he's given it under pressure. Mane gets into good positions and then picks the wrong ball or overdoes it. Long is doings. A decent job, if not quite creating much so far.
