Brett Ormerod Retires

As above, age 39. Played 98 games and scored 13 goals for Saints.

Good memories of Brett during his time at Saints.

FA Cup semi goal a great moment, amazing to be there that day at Villa Park and a good, hard working pro who had a penchant for scuffed shots when well placed.

Great foil for Beattie.

Nice looking lad too:

20 years too late.

In my top three worst ever players to wear the shirt.

Christ that's harsh.

Dryden, Dia, Lee Todd, Augustin "the tin man" Delgado, Andrei Kanchelskis (did you not see his 'performance' vs Everton?), Caulker; I really don't have to think too hard to think of dross worse than Brett Ormerod.

Ormerod did well for Saints, a hard-working player who never gave anything other than his all, and a presser up front who created plenty of opportunities for Beattie with his closing down and workrate. Excellent goalscorer in the lower leagues too.

I was, however, nearly as delighted at the sitter he missed in the 2013 Conference Play-Off Final for Wrexham as I was with the goal he scored in the FA Cup Semi-Final for Saints. Also enjoyed his winner against Cardiff for Blackpool in the 2010 Championship Play-Off Final.

As hard as he worked, I always wondered how high we could have finished in 2003 had Pahars stayed fit. 10/10 for effort but I don't think he contributed anything like enough goals. I think he managed 5 league goals that year, plus a few against Tranmere and Watford.

I remember him being subbed off during the Blackpool vs saints FA cup game a few years back to a standing ovation which I think pretty much tells you how most saints fans view Brett. I used to love watching him and BT.

I remember that match too.We were herded onto a scaffolding structure exposed to the elements.Do you recall the brutal copper who threw the 8 year old to the ground for trying to defend his dad from police violence?

oops I meant Saints vs Blackpool at SMS Guly winner, Holloway having an after match meltdown and Brett was playing for Blackpool (and still got a standing ovation). The game you're describing sounds fun though :)

Strachan said that he had said him play for Blackpool and thought 'there's a player I'd sign if I ever had a club to manage' or words to that effect.

Read an article recently that he was training to take a food franchise, may have been Subway, as not all footballers are millionaires. Didn't the Northam used sing "and we still got Brett Ormorod on the bench"

A good tryer who probably earnt a good living from limited skills but still liked him for his effort.

His Uruguayan thing is such a specific xenophobia it's almost admirable. I'm not sure there's anything any Uruguayan player could do to change Alpine's mind.

Strange when their national team has mainly be characterised by extremely hard working and often dirty hard tackling players. Ramirez was up and down in form but never failed to try.

But then, I assume Alpine would be consistent and criticise all players who don't 'put a shift in' right? Nothing to do with nationality. Basically he wants 11 Ormerods, that's what English football is missing.

Plus the fact he's never seen him play, apart from some Mickey Mouse tyrolean friendly, in which he forgot his "image" and was caught smiling on camera.

I guess Kevin Phillips will have mixed feelings about this...on the one hand he won't get to hear the 'She sh***** Brett Ormerod' chants but on the other hand...Brett will have time on his hands and some tempting sandwich fillings....:-)

I liked him...real trier, not blessed with great skill but would never give up..Happy retirement!!

+1 for the near miss in the Cup Final - it was almost written in the stars that one. Which kind of sums him up - great team player, awesome workrate, but not quite there at the top level. At least he had a verse in the Posh Spice song. We've come a long long way since then...

Played his part in an exciting time for Saints, new stadium, team seemed emerging, WGS, and the Cup run. Certainly played his part in that, and of course the goal v Wayford in the semi final.

Good memories of his time with us, so wish him well on the retirement.

Had one of the more original and amusing songs too.

Filling sandwiches? That's one euphemism that I haven't come across before.

I'll agree with that comment as well "9".

Brett always turned in a good shift and did a lot of " donkey work " for James Beattie, (I wonder how many assists that might have been).

A good example of a player who although not scoring lots himself, was often involved in helping other to do so.
