A lot of us knew Malc from Saints games. When he moved to Philadelphia for work he never requested the fame of 'Philly Saint' but the media picked up on it. Shared many a pint or 10 with him before/during/after a game. Sad news.

RIP Malc - Was in shock when I heard this news last night. Doesn't seem real. Enjoyed lots of away games with you.

Again Sincere condolences to his family.

Like others that knew him when I found out yesterday morning I was shocked and saddened.

The highlights with Malc (Rossy), sharing a 12hr bender with him in Bucherest before the Steau game, sharing with him in Newcastle, (turned out to be a 2 day bender!) he was always to be seen with a smile on his face and looking forward to the game and a Saints win.

A very good bloke, and a really honest, genuine person. He will be missed.

R.I.P Rossy. Saints did the business for you last night.

Not sure who the other guy on the left though or where I took the photograph, but obviously at an away match somewhere if anyone can help, maybe Charlton?

The other guy is "Manzo" I think? Lives in Brum now. Saw him at WBA away and in Holland.

Been going through my old pics. I've got tons of pics with Malc in. I may put some up later. The whole 'Philly Saint' got out of hand quite quickly. The top pic below is of Malc and Paul Belverstone when he worked for Meridian. Meridian did a full feature on him including filming him arriving at his house, then down the pub before a game and interviewing his mates etc.

These pics were taken at the Rat & Parrott (pub next door to the Mayflower) on March 16 2002 (2-2 v Leicester). I could have sworn I had a rip of the Meridian feature but haven't found it yet.

Is that me Jan? Ha, think I may have lost those youthful looks now :)

Very sad news, a great guy and a true Saints fan, rest in peace mate.

Never made the connection as to who you are on here. Remember seeing you at a lot of games back in the early 2000s.

Dear fellow saints,

I am Jamie, son of Malcolm (Saint Malc/Philly Saint). I just want to say that my family and I have been touched by the wonderful tributes on this thread, which we were made aware of by the club. Thank you all so much. He was a dedicated, selfless and loving man, and we will sorely miss him. It means the world to us to have that community support from those associated with his biggest passion: Southampton FC.

As a family, we are in the process of arranging a funeral and other tributes to his life. As such, I am looking to collate stories, photos, newspaper articles (perhaps about his semi-pro football days), etc. to remember him by. I recognise a few of the names mentioned on this thread, having attended so many football games with my father over the years, so I know there will be people who have some great stories. Rut, I fondly remember the games we went to together—not least when we won 2–1 at Anfield and even Brett Ormerod scored. Also, I think I recall you ‘losing’ thousands of pounds when a youthful Robin van Persie scored deep into Wenger time at Highbury to ruin you audacious 2–1 bet after Rory Delap scored two identical headers at our end.

Any other tales or photos and tributes, related to our beloved club or not, please email me. The address is: jross597@gmail.com.

Thank you,

Jamie

Hello Rut. How you doing mate. Thank you for letting us know. But such horrid, horrid news.

I Knew Malc and had many great away trips with him bumping into him at just about every ground and any prematch ale house. We even turned up early in Bucharest only to find Malcolm already in situ in the Irish bar...

The one trip that will always stay with me is the 2dayer he arranged for a Tuesday night game in Sunderland. The coldest I have ever been at a footy match with so few Saints fans making the game. However our small band of Saints came togrther from all directions and met at the Travel Inn at Newcastle for 2 days of complete laughs chaos and friendships. We even had Paul the New York Saint fly in for the session.

A crazy couple of days in the company of a lovely chap.

One of the most passionate Saints fans you will ever meet.

A true Saint, a true gent.

RIP Malc.

Bloody hell, wasn't expecting to turn up in a photo on here with Malc! I honestly haven't got the faintest idea where or when that was taken! 2003 onwards, judging from the hair, could well be The Anchor, as someone suggested, would make it most likely a trip to St Andrews, at a guess.

What I most remember about Malc was how daft he thought the fuss that was made about him flying over from Philly for games, I think I'm remembering his view correctly that as he had the money and the time to do it, it wasn't anything anyone else wouldn't have done in the same situation. Not sure I agreed with his modesty, to be honest!

Like everyone else, I'm shocked at the news. Annoyingly, I can't actually remember the last time we crossed paths, but no doubt he would have produced a fine impression of a man who was happy to see someone he knew before listening to me jibber on about Saints.

My condolences to his family, as others have said, it's far too young.

It takes a hell of a lot to make me give respect to someone I never knew personally.

From what I see here, we have not lost just a Saints fan, but a great Saints fan, and more importantly a great family man and good friend to a lot of people.

Jamie, It's hard at this time, I know that from experience. In the future though you will meet your dad again in your dreams. They will be a great condolence and a source of immense pleasure. Hold onto those dreams.

I had no idea and didn't even know Malcolm was ill until I stumbled across this thread. Really sad.

I had kept in touch with Malc over the years and used to work with him so I saw him regularly and we always talked Saints all day but we lost touch in recent years. Very sad to learn of his passing. In fact, last time I saw him in a football capacity was at MK Dons away when I moaned about not being able to sit on the comfy, padded seats and he liked standing up for the match. Something we totally disagreed on. We disagreed on a lot and used to deliberately wind one another up but always in good spirit. Sadly missed.

Very sorry to hear about his passing. Thats me (Lee Hankins) and Sean English in the top picture i believe. Remember this day very well. It was Gordon Pitman who made us go to the Rat and Parrot that day to meet Malc for the first time. As you say he didnt seem to get what all the fuss was about. Saw him many times at football after that day.

Its very sad to think that we have lost both of them in recent years.

Dear all,

We will be remembering my father, Malcolm Ross/Philly Saint/Saint Malc, who I have been thinking about every minute of every day since he passed away last week, at a funeral service at Southampton Crematorium on Friday 5th February at 11 am. As a family, we extend invites to all those who knew him. Please spread the word so we can all say goodbye together.

In honour of his memory, we will be holding a wake in Winchester shortly after the service. We are required to put together a guestlist for this, so if you would like to attend, please can you send me an email to jross597@gmail.com. Please include names of other friends, relatives, etc.
