norwaysaint Posted 11 January, 2016 Share Posted 11 January, 2016 Why would they bother, he is no good apparently I thought the quote actually said that nobody was near ready for the first team. This article isn't about buying players ready for the first team, it's about getting players for their academy. I don't think anybody said he was "no good". Are you misquoting by accident, having misunderstood, or is it your way of pointing out that you think people were wrong and that he is ready for the first team? jasoneuelllfanclub Posted 11 January, 2016 Share Posted 11 January, 2016 The timing of this story is supicious given koeman's quotes on state of the academy last week I am starting to doubt Koeman's judgement especially if he thinks Matt Targett is the only one close to first team football. I dont think there is a supporter that would agree Targett is good enough. I would be really concerned if Matt Targett is the best propsect we have but I suspect this is not the case. Having said that both the U18s and U21's have gone backwards in terms of league results since Jason Dodd and Paul Williams departed the club. They have taken some real hammerings in games as well. Hesketh is 19 which is quite old if Utd were only considering him as an "academy" prospect. It would be different if he was 14, 15, 16 but he's at the stage in his career where he would really need to make a breakthrough pretty soon. Window Cleaner Posted 11 January, 2016 Share Posted 11 January, 2016 Everyone does it. Although Hesketh will cease to be a "teenager" in the near future. doddisalegend Posted 11 January, 2016 Share Posted 11 January, 2016 Everyone does it. Utd already have a fair old selection of 19-22 year olds, they actually play in the PL from time to time, Hesketh would need to go somewhere where he'll play real football. dronskisaint Posted 11 January, 2016 Share Posted 11 January, 2016 The fact that he's a quality prospect seems to have gone under the radar here - I've seen quite a bit of our youth games over the last couple of years and he's looked a consistently good performer. Sh*t at the Norwich game but they all were! Still think the story is ****** though..... Quality prospect he may well be but for him the clock is ticking because he turns 20 in a couple of months and he's not a first team squad regular. At Utd they have about 6 U21s who actually play in the first team on occasions so I really don't think that's a likely destination for Hesketh. He's not really an academy type signing any more, needs to be looking for first team football at his age..

As someone who has actually watched Targett play regularly - yes he is ready to be given more pitch time in the first team but no he isn't the finished product but that's what giving players a chance to develop is all about. Targett is a regular for England Under 21s which shows that others also see his promise. Yes he definitely is the one that's closest but Hesketh, Slattery and Lewis are all fine prospects, they are just younger and less experienced. People on here have weirdly unrealistic expectations of how many any academy can produce at one time. Blimey if just 1 of those 5 becomes the player we hope foe the academy will have done its job. That mate, is exactly what the board want you to think. Its all one big greasy PR machine. Koeman has started giving them a hard time and they've begun the deflection and undermine strategy they have used every time it goes against them. Shropshire Saint Posted 11 January, 2016 Share Posted 11 January, 2016 I have been impressed with what little I have seen of Hesketh, but what do I know? If we can get money for him sell him and all the other members of the Under 21 side except of course Golden Boy Targett. Sarcasm apart, I feel that Koeman's comments last week, particularly in view of the way that the first team are so underperforming were totally out of order and that he may well have irretrievably damaged his reputation in the eyes of many fans, myself included. It is one thing for a manager to feel that way, it is a totally different matter to make a public comment on the subject.
