SAINTS vs Palace FA Cup Build Up Thread

I'd normally be inclined to agree, but three at the back has not worked for us at all this season.

Where's Wanyama?

He said last season he likes 3 CBs against teams that play 4-4-2 and he said in the presser on Thurs that Palace play 4-4-2 and that 3 CBs are a possibility.

Problem for me is that they don't really play 4-4-2.

Their biggest threat are wingers so our wingbacks cant get forward because they are chasing them back all game, plus it drags CBs into wide areas which is how we conceded at Selhurst.

But still a decent ish team and a few sub options.

He's suspended.

Doh! Course he is. Thanks!

I suppose effective 352 can also help against wingers because the wide centre halves can come out and cover quicker. It's just that every time we've played it this season the players have looked hesitant and unsure of where to position themselves. I might be forgetting a game but the last good performance I can remember with that shape was Everton last seals.

I get you. When we played this formation a few week ago at theirs, our left and right CBs were forever being pulled out wide and left loads of space in the middle...which they finally scored from

we created oh so little and when we did get THAT chance, we blew it. But palace were comfortably the better side that day

We played 3-5-2 when we comprehensively beat palace last season too.

That's not 352. With Cedric and Bertrand it might be, but that's a back 5.

532 with 3 defensive midfielders. Or certainly 3 who don't score.

Could be a long boring game! Can see us grinding out a 1-0 though. Problems are obvious, two goalscorers in the team and they don't score many, and no creativity.

But Mane and long did it to arsenal just with pace and hard work, so maybe today as well. Hope we get to see seager for a while too. Far easier for a young striker to come in to two up front or mane playing just off I think. Hope we stick with that.

It's definitely 3-5-2. It's not a back 5 - no-one does that.

I think the concept of the formation is overcooked on here. If you played a 4-4-2 and stayed in that shape, you'd never score! Lose the ball and 5 men back is highly likely, win it and get the wingbacks pushing forward....don't know where Bertrand is but Targett and Martina don't inspire as an attacking/crossing threat.....will take any kind of win atm and hopefully some activity in the window to give us some more options......

one game i can totally relax about, not in the slightest bit interested in the Cup unless we reach the the last 8 then i will care if we win or not. The league is our priority and we have two massive home games coming up that we NEED TO WIN.

My sentiments exactly, although you will be trampled to death by the rose coloured spectacle wearing, ostriches.

Where is Bertrand?

Maybe he was late. ;)

Seems odd to have left him out unless he has an injury, especially now that we have finally found someone who can take corners from our right.

Expect the formation to change if we have any sort of injury issue because apart from Cedric we don't have any defenders on the bench, hopefully it won't happen.

Not my point. No one does that on the formation board, but that's exactly how it works out if you don't have attacking full backs, which is our situation today.

Well their position on the field means they will be attacking. Whether or not they are good attacking full backs is another matter!

If you are suggesting that as they are better defensively than attacking then in effect it is more of a 5-3-2 than 3-5-2 then I'm with you. They will be the only width on the pitch and neither of them can beat a man and in terms of crossing I think Targett is ok but Martina I am not sure about. But it might be one of those ones where by just taking up wide positions they create space for others and won't see much of the ball themselves.

I do agree with you on the back 5- reckon its a 5212 formation today. Counter attacking football i think.
