SaintZamboni Posted 5 January, 2016 Share Posted 5 January, 2016 I know it's the FA cup but this 'magic' that surrounds it really doesn't apply to winning it. It applies to lower league teams getting a good draw and the occasional giant killing. As I said, it is a non event when you look at it closely - 12% won by teams outside of the 'big' 6 in 25 years...

Sour Mash Posted 5 January, 2016 Share Posted 5 January, 2016 The FA cup is statistically a non event though. We won't win it. 3/25 FA cups since 1990 have been won by teams which aren't Utd, City,Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs or Liverpool. Sad to say but given our bad form I'd rather we use the cup to find some form, maybe rest up a few, try a few out. Not that bothered. We're probably not going to win the league either, so why be bothered about that. Day out a Wembley, even for just the Semi Final is a decent buzz. Mr Biscuits Posted 6 January, 2016 Share Posted 6 January, 2016 Given what's at stake with the sponsorship deal next season I'd prefer us to concentrate on the league. Would have absolutely loved a cup run this season given where we seemed to be after last season however I've had to rapidly readjust my expectations given recent performance (and utter lack thereof). Save the cup for another year, right now Koeman needs that team to be concentrating on getting mathematically safe . Let's see what we Can do with the extra money next season. I seem to remember that Liverpool dropped a few points at the end of the season after they had won the league. We came with a good run at the end of the season to get second. But agree that we should have won the cup that year. I was at Highbury to see a half-fit Steve Williams play. The Cat Posted 6 January, 2016 Share Posted 6 January, 2016 It's all we have left to play for so we need to go balls out for the win. Fortunately we appear to have caught Palace at a reasonably good time as they have dropped off somewhat after their good start and haven't scored in 3 games. ScepticalStan Posted 6 January, 2016 Share Posted 6 January, 2016 So many chances? When? Couple of subs where he did alright? When did he last get a proper chance in the first team? 2 years ago? I wouldn't mind but the players we pick instead have been sh1t. Sooner he goes the better, it's just frustrating having a talented creative player not playing and having to watch Wanyama and Davis. I'm with you mate, and whilst I salute your efforts, I've long resigned myself to the impossibility of trying to persuade people. If Ramirez isn't sold or loaned-to-be-sold in January he'll doubtless eventually get his 'chance' when he's brought on with 5 minutes to go to play out of position whilst we're defending a 1-0 lead away from home with 10 men. He'll then be blamed for not creating anything.
Mr Biscuits Posted 6 January, 2016 Share Posted 6 January, 2016 Fans can be dicks some times can't they. FA cup is a lot about luck and timing. We got an easy run in 2003, maybe we could again, maybe we'd play people at the right time, or just show our potential in cup games. What better season for it? We have a long tedious league run in to mid table. We probably have one chance to salvage something from this season, the fa cup. Why the hell wouldn't we go for it with all we have? It's not many extra games. It's ridiculous to think that winning matches and improving the atmosphere would somehow dent our league form (which we don't even have now), we're not in a relegation fight anyway, and even if we were, isn't football about winning things? You do know you don't get any of the premier league tv money yourself right? If we weren't in the position of having only gained 4 points from the last 24 on offer I would completely agree with you. Maybe you're right and a good cup run could be the very thing to sort out the malaise afflicting the team (or maybe Mane and Wanyama could just f*ck off and that would solve it). Thing is I would hate to see us dragged in to that bottom part of the table where teams are constantly looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone. With the way we are playing it's not going to take much for us to end up there.

Off the top of my head, Wigan Portsmouth (lol) Middlesbrough Brighton all got relegated the season they got to the cup final. That said I think we should field a full strength side and get as far as we can..you never know if the draw will be kind..I remember Liverpool getting to the final and playing Sunderland without playing a premier league team in any previous round.. Saint-Fred Posted 6 January, 2016 Share Posted 6 January, 2016 a) That's not many teams over a few decades is it b) why are we assuming they wouldn't have gone down anyway? c) most of us get relegated at some point. i'd rather do it after winning something. Sorry was just doing the counter argument to the point that teams doing well have good cup runs. Of course I think those teams would have gone down anyway. My point was that I don't think league form and cup runs are really linked, I agree the list I gave isn't many but teams from outside the top tier have been in finals quite recently, teams that have only just avoided relegation have got to finals and it's quite possible that by May the last two beaten finalists will have been relegated a year later. None of this is meant to relate to us and say we will go down if we have a cup run quite the opposite, it just demonstrates that league form, good or bad, goes out the window and anyone can get to a final so why not treat it seriously! Or was I dreaming? Yeah gutted we won that, much better for us longer term to have been hammered. Ever think football has a randomness about it? You can win it and go down and win it and also win the league - really weird. Although statistically if the year ends in a 6 you are more likely to struggle by having a good cup run as injuries will be up by 14.8% so we should throw it. JRM Posted 7 January, 2016 Share Posted 7 January, 2016 Any idea how many we've sold for this? The Northam , Itchen and Kingsland stands are pretty much sold out , still a few thousand left in the Chapel end and corners , but will be a decent crowd. I understand the apathy of some fans following the disappointment in cups already this season with Europa league and League cup exits in disappointing fashion, the Liverpool defeat especially fresh in the memory. Still a good chance for fans to take kids along and this season has been good for fans who can't afford the expensive Premier League tickets with very cheap deals for Vitesse / Midgetland / Villa / Liverpool and Palace cup games. norwaysaint Posted 7 January, 2016 Share Posted 7 January, 2016 Why do a few people imagine that losing this will have a positive effect on our league performances? That's just ridiculous logic. Winning this will lift the team, losing this will just cause more discontent. Do some really think it's a distraction? That the players just can't pass accurately, stay in position or put in a tackle, because they were just too busy thinking about an FA Cup match in a few weeks? What we need is the players playing better, I think playing well enough to beat Palace would be a good step in that direction wouldn't it?

Might as well have another look at him, Cedric is still out presumably? Would like to see Seager feature, we are toothless at present and would be decent experience for him. With Victor suspended (thank heavens) Reed must be due a start with 3 home games in a week? Save Mane for the league games. As with most things, Koeman says the right things but rarely delivers on them Hence my first sentence. Also, there is a big difference between being keen on a move to a top 4 club (every single player we have would in theory fall in that bracket) versus players who are fundamentally not trying or committing to do well for us (possibly VW, but pretty hard to assess and manage).
