Batman Posted 28 December, 2015 Share Posted 28 December, 2015 why is that happening to us more often than not this season. we are capable of some lovely football but that seems to be restricted to around 1 half of a game. I know teams cant replicate form all the time but it is clearly evident that we have shown completely different form after HT in many games is it tiredness? or the quality of the player? not as fit as we should be? really weird if you ask me
ErwinK1961 Posted 28 December, 2015 Share Posted 28 December, 2015 Mental fragility. Players seem like they think it's inevitable. I'd also flip it around, does anyone ever think we'll get ourselves back into a game when we go behind? I don't see anyone grabbing a game by the scruff of the neck, no leadership. We're fantastic when comfortable, but when the going gets tough we melt.

Saint-Armstrong Posted 28 December, 2015 Share Posted 28 December, 2015 Today we played with such high intensity in the first half. It worked to our benefit and carved us numerous chances. We didn't score enough of them. It then caught up with us. We got tired, sat deeper and conceded more fouls. A freak first goal and then a poor second goal to concede. We need to take more chances and hopefully we will against Norwich.

Yep. We never ever seem to play crap first half, go behind , then rally to win even if overall play poor...such as west ham did today.

This change at HT has been happening most of the season though The first goal was freak. Antonio fell over, the clearance deflected and looped over the goalkeeper. Slightly disappointed not to see Maarten dive for the second though. Feels like Forster would have thrown himself at it at least.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 28 December, 2015 Share Posted 28 December, 2015 If you are going to only manage 45 mins of high intensity football it is imperative you take any chances in that period and one was not enough today

Golden Balls Posted 28 December, 2015 Share Posted 28 December, 2015 At half time, every fan was saying "we should be more than 1 up. We'll pay for that". If the fans can see that, so can the players. When we dominate and don't put the game to bed, the heads drop. The opposition only need 1 half chance and suddenly we go deep and you just wait for the goal to happen. Like you say, we lack leadership.
Pilchards Posted 29 December, 2015 Share Posted 29 December, 2015 West Ham played a high line and we have the runners to beat that system. Come 2nd half we seem to lose shape and then start pumping the ball into the box when West Ham play deeper. How does Long and Mane out jump those tall centre backs? mattiiiboiii7 Posted 29 December, 2015 Share Posted 29 December, 2015 With Andy Carroll coming on in the 2nd you know they are gonna lump it up to him. So I can see there's no point in pressing high if they are just going to go route 1 every time. That said. 2nd half yesterday was so bad with or without Carroll being on the pitch. sussexsaint Posted 29 December, 2015 Share Posted 29 December, 2015 We have to start taking a higher proportion of our chances. This , pure and simple , should have been dead and buried by half time. We played some lovely stuff, sweet passes and chased down everything. Just couldn't cope with the changes made and lost confidence very quickly once wham got their tails up

This current squad do lose their confidence (as a team) very quickly and find it hard to rally.

sadoldgit Posted 29 December, 2015 Share Posted 29 December, 2015 You say good half, but at West Ham, that wasn't an effective half. If you get those opportunities and dominate you should be at very least 2-0. 1-0 gave WH a great chance and once it went 1-1 it was pretty obvious what would happen. I'm not convinced about it being a fitness thing so much as a psychological weakness. Too many times heard Koeman talk about it being too hard or impossible one 2-0 down or whatever. I get the impression this team is beaten as soon as they're behind, and that's not about ability, we've seen there's plenty of that. What we're crying out for, and have been for ages, is a goalscoring leader in the middle of the pitch. A Gerrard type, although obviously not that level as we'd never afford it. Basically Steven Davis with more balls and 15 goals. Nail on head.

St Neel Posted 2 January, 2016 Share Posted 2 January, 2016 We werent too great in the 1st half today, but fell apart completley after half time again. No cohesion to our play at all. Even if VW hadnt got himself sent off, I doubt very much whether we would have scored.
