Saint-Armstrong Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 (edited) Koeman called for a battling display and for the players to show fight and win their individual battles, and boy did they respond! Not the prettiest game, but goals from Cuco Martina (and what a goal!), Shane Long (twice) and José Fonte (baby) bring an end to the winless run. Still 12th, but now just five points away from the Europa League spots. Edited 26 December, 2015 by Saint-Armstrong
Pamplemousse Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 I may have been wrong about us getting stuffed...
O_RLY Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 'Hard work beats talent, unless talent works hard' - Nigel Adkins Thanks lads.
BotleySaint Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Thrashing! Astonishing reversal of scoreline.
Jonnyboy Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Result of the season. Wish I was there. (Pelle not smiling in the stands).
Pamplemousse Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 As brilliant as this victory is, it is also frustrating. If only we played like this every game, it could be us at the top of the league instead of Leicester. And as I also said before the game, no matter what the result, that we still needed quality additions in January. The situation hasn't changed. Happy days though!

hasper57saint Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Not my daughter Jose Fontes who was born last Sunday. Proud to be a Saint this evening.
Batman Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 this is what it is about. Bit like what other middling sides are doing. More pace, more aggression, got the ball forward far more quickly and most importantly, to wo pacey, busy fellas up top. playing a static pelle was killing us shlong was my MoM. just an absolute nightmare all night. the corner he won for our 3rd would never ever have happened had pelle been on the pitch we made their defenders face their own goal time and time again and got the ball forward a lot more quickly brilliant performace and Stek had little to do shouts to Martina, Clasie, Vic
Suhari Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 I was so wrong in my prediction! Happily so. One swallow does not make a summer; but that was a really good performance. Energy, movement, pressing. Moved the ball quickly. Had a shot from outside the box!!
SuperSAINT Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Amazing. Absolutely buzzing! Credit to RK - A couple of speedsters up top murdered them.
sentry Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 That striker must be worth at least 2 £LONGS. GREAT result and performance. Fans sounded great too, well done. On a serious note, I hope Shane gets a chance, I've been saying for a bit to give me starts, defenders hate players like him. . I'm not saying drop pelle, just mix it up more, pelle in, long in, or both. Big vic also great and mane and what a goal from Martina to get things rolling.
Plastic Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Long & Mane is the right combo, this could restart our season. Keep Pelle as the impact sub.
trousers Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Long & Mane is the right combo, this could restart our season. Keep Pelle as the impact sub. Eh? Long is "championship at best" surely....?
LaptopSaint Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 And a quick shout-out to Victor. Come in for a bit of stick in the last few weeks, from me and many others. But absolutely superb tonight. Maybe he was auditioning for a role in Arsene's midfield - but right now, who cares! Great win. COYR
Suhari Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Ian Wright: dressed like a ****, and moaning like one too.

nta786 Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 4-0 + Long first half disallowed, VVD header disallowed, Long hits the post- Saints you were excellent. We March On!
itchen Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 I gave my son the use of my season ticket tonight. Looks like I should dominated more often.
Miltonaggro Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 I thought there would be a stuffing at SMS today, but didn't think Saints would be dishing it out, Arsenal lucky it was just four! Glady proven wrong, Saints magnificent!
Saint_clark Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Thing is we have kind of played like that in other recent games, just not taken our chances and then let our heads drop when we let the first goal in. We simply have to keep Long up front, he has improved massively since he moved here. Yes once in a while he'll f*ck up a one on one, but what he brings to the team is worth it. Clasie looking superb as well. It's all coming together.
Sheaf Saint Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 (Pelle not smiling in the stands). Yeah I clocked that. He probably realises that he's going to have to fight to get his starting place back after such a comprehensive performance without him.
pangy Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Back to the high intensity pressing game and we pull off a performance like this Not one bad performance tonight,we played as a team and pressed as a unit, Wanyama and Clasie were superb and hats off to Long he was worth £12m tonight. Koeman may of been forced into that selection but he got the tactics spot on,Clasie on Ozil and Long on Mertesacker absolute genius
5string Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Only saw the last 2 mins, but what a scoreline! Fantastic! Vic was playing with a bit of swagger, wasn't he? Tadic looked slippery and $h£ong was causing a few problems for the Arsenal back 4 slugs. Looked like we were working hard, too. Individually & as a team. Nice one, Saints! More of that, please.
Chris27687 Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Saints 4 Saintsweb Forum Intelligentsia 0 Lol Not many saw that coming! Get in!!!!
Dalek2003 Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 A very good win. We need 6 points off Wham and Norwich. Looking more comfortable in the table, especially with Newcastle defeat.
Plastic Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Eh? Long is "championship at best" surely....? Don't think you'll find a quote from me in that vein. He's frustrating and a poor finisher but his commitment and tenacity more than make up for it IMO.
B Rabbit Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 our team are dicks... Play terrible but capable of playing superb. No no coincidence we played a thousand times better without the immobile black hole up top.... Pace and passing won us that game....and cuco martins =D
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Crikey! Never saw that coming but we were awesome. Great shape, superb tactics & finishing at last. Have to say Long may keep Pelle out for a while with pace & movement like that.
Mr X Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 The team & koeman to a certain extent answered the questions I asked of them, It seems we are ready for the fight! all credit to the players after several appalling performances
Kingsland Codger Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 On the BBC 5 Live commentary, Steve Claridge was purring about how great we were.
trousers Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Don't think you'll find a quote from me in that vein. He's frustrating and a poor finisher but his commitment and tenacity more than make up for it IMO. Yeah, sorry, wasn't aiming that at you personally....just a general observation
Trout-Tickler Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Result of the season. Wish I was there. (Pelle not smiling in the stands). Was that his bird standing just to the left of him?
Sheaf Saint Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Don't think you'll find a quote from me in that vein. He's frustrating and a poor finisher but his commitment and tenacity more than make up for it IMO. I said it at half time, after his dreadful miss towards the end of the half. I am happy to be proved an utter moron in this respect.
ART Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 A true miracle. One of the best Saints performances in many a year. Under pressure Ronald Koeman finally had the guts to roll out the "long" awaited PLAN B. Congratulations. What a difference a day (in football) makes!!!!
WealdSaint Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Of course it's all due to the good Doctor...............Dr Barry Gale!
gammon cheeks Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Ronald Koeman is the man and so is Martina
Convict Colony Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Thought Claise and Vic were immense in midfield, Mane worked selflessly as did Davis. But special shout out for Cuco and Shane, great goals and Shane's work rate was fantastic.
Mr X Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Was that his bird standing just to the left of him? no it was his plane
Chalkboy Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Haven't seen a single second of the match so can't comment on anyone. just overjoyed at the result. Would like to know how Cuco performed throughout. Did he get forward much? What about defending? Ball distribution? What a result!!!!! Dull Boxing Day gathering just got interesting!!!!
scotty Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Not many saw that coming! Get in!!!! I predicted 2-1 Saints, didn't see a 4-0 coming though. Excellent stuff
david in sweden Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 all those critics of Martina are right. Just look at tonight.....Koeman gives him a start ...and he takes nearly 20 mins to score a "lucky goal " ....total waste of money.
Pamplemousse Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 A true miracle. One of the best Saints performances in many a year. Koeman may of been forced into that selection but he got the tactics spot on,Clasie on Ozil and Long on Mertesacker absolute genius Good summary. The other noticeable difference in our game was the effectiveness of Mane in the 10 role and Tadic late in a similar position - keeping the ball on the deck more and the pace and movement of Long and Mane really exposed Arsenal's CBs.
trousers Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 Wenger: "we were a bit unlucky with the first goal"
Saint_clark Posted 26 December, 2015 Posted 26 December, 2015 All about Arsenal in the post-match discussion. Sigh.
